Life Muses by Ro: A Significant Influence

He came pedaling up the sidewalk astride a pink Schwinn bicycle, his World War I flying ace cap’s straps flapping about his goatee. Looking more like a janitor than the head of a college music department, he grinned when he saw me standing on the sidewalk holding my violin case.

“You must be Rozanne.”

He gestured for my mother and me to follow him, and when we entered the music room, the woody smell of rosin rose up and filled my head. “Let me see your instrument.”

I opened the case, lifted out my violin, strapped on the little green shoulder pad and held it up for inspection. “Old man Pierce made that one,” he said, running his hands over the strings.

I looked over at my mother. “I bought it at Pierce Music in Salt Lake City,” she smiled.

“I’d know one of his violins anywhere. See the curl at the top? And look at this bow... It’s a round bow. They’re unusual. Pierce loved to make round bows.”

He took the bow in his hand and tested it for flexibility. “I have a story about a bow. Once, when I was the Concert Master of the Utah Symphony, the conductor was trying to get the orchestra to play Rite of Spring. Ever hear of it?”

I flinched. No, I had not.

“It’s hard,” he said, understating. “We were sight reading it and the orchestra was struggling. The conductor began to get angrier and angrier that we weren’t playing it correctly. After a while, I took my handkerchief and tied it onto the end of my bow and started playing again. I was waving the white flag, you see.”

I smiled. I was able to imagine that happening.

“Everyone started to laugh, the conductor calmed down, and we got through the rehearsal.”

Suddenly remembering why we were together, he said, “Play a G scale for me.”

“G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G,” my violin scratched.

He looked at my mother. “At least she plays with enthusiasm. That’s good. And her ear is fine.”

“Play the D scale,” came the order. “Up and down.”

“D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D-C#-B-A-G-F#-E-D.”

Holding his second and third fingers together, he demonstrated, “When you play the F# and the C#, bring the second finger right next to the third finger. Try again.”

I did and it sounded better.

“You need a new shoulder pad,” he decided. “Your position is awkward. Look, it should be like this.” He walked over to a nearby table, opened a violin case that held two violins, picked up one and began playing.

“Look how my arm moves so my bow goes straight.” His bow smoothly glided over the strings. “Now listen to this.” He flipped his elbow out and the bow started swinging back and forth in a curved motion as he played.

“It sounds scratchy,” I said.

He grinned. “That’s right. That’s what you sound like now. But, we’re going to fix it, so don’t worry.”

Suddenly, he looked up at the clock, “It’s been two hours.”

My mother said, “Let me pay you more.”

He smiled. “No, that’s alright. I’m taking her because she must want to learn a lot if you would drive her 90 minutes one way to get here.”

And so it went – this first meeting with one of the most important men in my life: Mr. Richard Nibley.

I looked up to Mr. Nibley. He made me feel that I could accomplish anything. I studied with him for five years, and if I had never met him, it is likely that I never would have received my degree in music education. He believed in me and because I knew he believed in me, I learned to believe in myself. Unfortunately, Mr. Nibley died of Lou Gehrig’s disease before I finished my degree and he passed away, thinking that I had given up the violin.

But I didn’t, Mr. Nibley. I was just taking a little breather at the time. The words you said to me shortly before your death when I saw you at your brother’s home hung about the air and I went back to school to complete what we had started together.

So, here’s to you, Richard Nibley. I have now made a permanent record that says you mattered to me. I am leaving this muse behind me and sending it out in the world so that people can read it. I think I needed to tell you – once and for all – thanks.

My life is better because you were in it.

- Ro

P.S. I’d give anything if I had a photograph of Mr. Nibley to put on a digital scrapbooking layout. In an attempt to come up with a poor substitute, I recently drove to Ephraim, Utah to take some photos of the music building or his home. Unfortunately, I discovered – to my dismay – that 32 years has rearranged the town (and my memory) so completely that I was unable to recognize the buildings that I thought were embedded in my mind forever.

I drove away from the little town that night filled with sadness, but with a resolve not to let this happen again. I do not want any more significant stories and people to pass from my life and I am going to try my best to resurrect what I can. I have the perfect medium – digital scrapbooking – and I will use it. Just imagine how much better this muse would have been if I could have presented a layout with a photo of Mr. Nibley and myself in front of the music building?

Assignment: If you or your family members have significant people in your lives, get photos of them, preferably with you. Create layouts with significant details on them because memories will not hold the details fast. Someday, you will be very glad that you did it.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Best of the Message Board

Question: I'm new to the forum and I've been looking around trying to find out if there are any monthly challenges. See, the thing is, I don't really have the time to participate in weekly challenges. My boss makes my job a weekly challenge enough for me and I don't need any more stress to finish stuff on a weekly basis. Monthly challenges would be much more manageable and I would love to participate. I'm aware it may be a very daft question, but please let me know, ok?

Answer 1: There is always a monthly challenge! And, a mid-month challenge! So, you get one twice per month. They are always listed in the newsletter, I suggest you subscribe if you haven't already.

Answer 2: The great thing about these monthly challenges is that you could win a Scrap Girls gift certificate! Give them a try! I can totally relate to not being able to keep up with all of the daily/weekly challenges. Life goes on.

Answer 3: Hello and welcome to Scrap Girls. One thing I did notice here is that if you want to take a challenge or a crop and do it a week or two after it was posted, that is still okay. If you see one that you like, do it and don't worry about the time you are “expected” to have it done by.

Answer 4: Welcome to Scrap Girls. There is never a deadline for the challenges here; you can always post in the galleries at any time. They are a lot of fun and I, for one, almost never complete things the day they are given. So pick something that looks inspiring and jump on in.

Answer 5: Welcome to Scrap Girls! If you see a challenge that appeals to you, go ahead and do a layout even though the “official deadline” has come and gone! You won't get any prizes or gifts that are specified for that challenge but you will get another layout done! I look forward to seeing your layouts in the gallery!

Answer 6: Hi and welcome! I just read about the monthly challenge in the newsletter and thought that would be something to look into. I'm amazed that one can keep up on daily challenges. I thought I would do one and poof the day was over and I didn't even start! Great question, and it was good for me to read about the monthly challenge twice!

Answer 7: Welcome. I'm just going to throw my 2¢ worth in, too. There are challenges that are not actually labeled monthly challenges, but they are chats and crops which actually come around about once a month. My personal favorite is the Sketch Challenge with Marnie Adams. You can do it whether you attend the crop or not, but joining in the chat is a great way to get to know everyone. If you check the calendar at the top of the message board you will see what event is for when and if you join in once you are not tied to it forever.

Also, on the daily challenges, you have no deadline to complete them; it's just a challenge to help you have a goal. Sometimes, I complete them and never get them posted online. (It’s not very often that I do that.) Every Saturday is a Color Challenge that is just great and I manage to do that one about once a month, so it’s more or less monthly for me anyway.

I’m just pointing out the flexibility with the challenges at Scrap Girls. Love it, love it, love it.

Question: I have been going through my mother's photo albums, digitally backing up everything and making sure things are labeled. Well, she has some old Polaroids that are just too small to do anything with (scrapbooking-wise), so I found a way to enlarge them without losing quality. This is for CS3 but if someone wants to try it in their program of choice and add it, I am sure it would be useful. You have to stair step this, otherwise the results will not be desirable. I recorded this as an action in CS3 so I just have to hit play.

  1. Open your image. I enlarged mine to 100% so that I could see the quality as I was going.
  2. Go to Image> Image Size in the document size section (where your width and height are) and change the value to percent. It will automatically enter a 100 here so change it to 110. Wait! Don't hit OK yet... at the bottom make sure that “Resample Image” is checked and chose “Bicubic Smoother (better for enlargements).”
  3. Now you can hit “OK.”

You have just enlarged the image by 10%. As I said earlier, you can record an action to do the steps for you. In between each increase you can go to Image> Image Size to see what size it is. Hope this helps someone.

Response 1: Another thing you can do is actually when you scan you can enlarge the image. I haven't tried your method, but I know that works really well. Set the resolution to 300 and then double or triple the size and it will do it as it scans.

Response 2: Excellent tips ladies! Now if I only had CS3... but my scanner does scan in 300 dpi so it helps for all of my pre-digi photos, which is the majority right now. Thanks!

Response 3: This is the way I resize photos too, but I never thought about recording a script (in PSP, scripts = actions) for it! Would save some clicks! Now, about the percentage to enlarge (or decrease)... this might be a technology equivalent to an old wives' tale, but I remember from my early days of working with graphics on the computer that it was best to enlarge in increments of 12.5 percent. Something about the way the pixels rearrange themselves. Has anyone else ever heard of this? Is this outdated? Not that I always do that, mind you... I usually go the 10%, but I feel guilty for not following the “rules.”

Response 4: This works in earlier versions of Photoshop, too. I've done it for years, so I've tried it in CS and version 7 as well as CS2, which is my current version. It is also worth it to make an action to do this and because it is such an easy process with very few steps, it makes a very good first action. In the past, I've added a hot key to it, but right now I just get into the action tab and hit play several times.

To explain just how good this system is, I once took a photo from online of the Lower East Side of New York City in the 20s so that I could scrap something for which I had no photos. I kept enlarging it until it filled an 8.5 x 11 layout top to bottom and about half way across. It printed out beautifully.

---

Question: If I have a black and white photo, can I make it into a color photo? I am not referring to the PhotoBasics actions or any of those. I am just wondering if there is a way to do this in PSE6. Please advise.

Answer 1: I have never tried it, but could you go to Enhance> Adjust Color> Color Variations and start adding color?

Answer 2: You could brush in the colors that you want. I'm not sure if there is a magic command that will do it automatically.

Answer 3: I don't think you really can, unless you want to color it with brushes like a coloring book page. The problem is that once a picture is black and white, there isn't any color information there for your computer to work with. You can go from color to black and white because basically you're just taking the color out, but to go the other way, the computer doesn't know which colors to replace the black and shades of grey with.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.

  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
