Life Muses by Ro: Bird Games

Note from Ro: I am still on my adventure. Since I am telling you about the adventure in advance, I don't know exactly what I'm doing, but I am on one right now. See Tuesday's muse for more information, about why I am on an adventure at all. Here's another favorite post from my blog for you. I hope you don't mind that I'm sharing these. I had to come up with this week's installments of muses in a hurry because this computer I'm using is clicking away at me. It needs to get to the shop!

Conversation overheard:

Bird 1: Ahh... nothing like a bird game, eh Frank?

Bird 2: This? You call this a bird game? Looks like mass chaos to me.

Bird 3: Where's the popcorn? They are supposed to have popcorn at bird games.

Bird 1: You have to be kidding me, Frank. Just look at the spread of those wings. If they keep it up, we'll win the series.

Bird 4: Series? There are a series of these things? Oh Frank, honey... you promised me that if I came to the park with you today, we could go shopping for a new nest. I want a new nest. I promised my mother that I'd have one the next time she visits. She simply hates sleeping in that old ball of twine we're using as a guest room.

Bird 3: Twine? I could use twine with my popcorn. I could string the popcorn on the twine and hang it over the back of the bench. But where is the popcorn? I can't see it anywhere.

Bird 2: There is no popcorn.

Bird 3: No popcorn? Scandalous.

Bird 4: Scandalous.

Bird 1: Scandalous.

Bird 2: Scandalous. In my day, there was always popcorn at bird games. Now there is just a bunch of flapping birds that are completely out of control. Where's the beauty? Where's the grace?

Bird 1: Where's the coach?

Bird 3: Where's the popcorn?

Bird 1, 2, and 4: Drop it.

Bird 3: Drop what? I don't have anything to drop.

Bird 2: Drop the popcorn already.

Bird 3: If I had some popcorn, I would drop it, but as I clearly do not have any, I am having a difficult time complying with your request.

Bird 4: Frank? Can we go yet? How long does a bird game last anyway?

Bird 2: Until the cows come home.

Bird 3: Cows? We can milk the cows when they get here. I understand that milk is quite tasty with popcorn and I could sure use some popcorn about now.

Bird 1: Oh... look at that... see... over there.... I think I see a popcorn stand. Why don't you go get some?

Bird 2: Good idea. Go get some popcorn. We'll wait here for you.

Bird 4: No we won't. We're going shopping. This game is over.

Bird 2: Well, fellas... I guess you heard the boss... It's over.

Bird 3: The bird game is over? Who won?

Bird 1: You did.

Bird 3: I did? What did I win?

Bird 1: A big bag of popcorn. Now all you have to do is go find it...

Tutorial: Altering a Marble Composition Notebook

Note: Tutorial created with the help of my daughter�s hands.

As the new school year begins, my kiddies each need a few marble notebooks. Over the summer, we make them unique! You can too.

Start by designing front and back covers. Your kids can help with the design process, mainly picking out the backgrounds and telling you where to drag things.

Roughly measure a composition book and make your digital layout a little larger. For this book, I used a single digital scrapbooking paper from my Serene Collection for the back, but you can be as creative as you wish. If you know what subject the book will be for, add that to the layout. If not, the kids can add that after school starts.

Print out your covers on cardstock. Trim off the left edge for the front and the right edge for the back. This step is important if you have designed the back! I have put many back covers on upside down!

Position the print where you want it on the book, aligning the trimmed edge of the print with the binding tape on the book. While holding the cover in place, flip the book and cover over and roughly trace (in pencil) around the cover. Do the same to the back cover. The pencil line gives you guidelines on where to spread your glue.

Glue the back side of the printout, making sure to go beyond your pencil line and all the way to the trimmed edge. Position the trimmed edge along the binding tape and adhere. Use a burnisher to smooth the paper down.

Use an X-acto knife to trim off the edge of the print out, making sure to get as close to the cardboard as possible.

Add any extras you would like at this point... ink the edges, add some ribbon, have fun!

Depending on the age of your kids, let them help you throughout the process! My daughter even had an end of summer party for her friends and they all made notebooks! They were old enough to do all of the work. I simply printed out some papers for them to play with and they personalized them with stickers.

Here's how it will work. On Sunday, I'll post a thread on the chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and I will even have a layout with a Word Art example. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout!

We'll post the time on Sunday, as the time changes around each time to allow participation by our international folks. Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!

July Board Game: Layout Reveal

Whether you travel on vacation or entertain right in your own backyard, summertime means fun! This month, we'll be having some fun as we play Layout Reveal!

Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout that is partially covered in a message board thread. A new section of the layout will be revealed each day until someone correctly guesses which layout it is. Once a layout is correctly identified, a new layout will be featured starting the following day.

Layouts will be found in the boutique on product details pages.

If you are the first to guess one of the layouts correctly, you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
