Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To add extra emphasis to the title, I used the brackets and scallops from Sarah Batdorf’s Digital Layout Template - 4X6 Bracket Me. I clipped coordinating papers to the layers. The red paper on the scallops was just what the layout needed to draw the eye to the title and give a certain amount of movement to the layout.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I found a really neat way to combine patterned and solid papers in this layout. The squares that appear on the blue background paper actually belong to the paper that is in the layer beneath it, which is covered in small, colourful squares.

I clicked on the “eye” next to the thumbnail image of the blue paper in the Layers Palette, to make it invisible, and then clicked on the thumbnail image of the “squares” paper beneath it. I chose the Rectangular Marquee Tool and then used it to select individual squares and a strip of squares near the top of the layout. By holding down the Shift key, I was able to choose several squares, one after the other. I ended up with “marching ants” around nine squares and the strip of squares.

Next, I made the blue paper layer visible again, clicked on its thumbnail image and then clicked Edit> Delete, which removed squares of the blue paper, allowing the groupings and strip of colourful squares to show through. The edges of the openings in the blue paper were a bit rough, so I added a small feathered blur to them by clicking Ctrl+F. The default setting in PSE5.0 was perfect for the look I wanted.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

On the striped paper, I wanted the original blue stripes to be red to match better with the rest of the items I used. First, I selected the blue color with the Magic Wand Tool (Tolerance set to “80”). Then, I changed the color with Image> Adjustments> Color Balance and played with the sliders until I was happy with the result.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To make my ribbon to appear to be under parts of my title, I duplicated the ribbon layer, put one layer on top of the title and the other ribbon under the title. I then masked the parts of the ribbon that were on the top ribbon layer that I wanted to appear under the title. Only apply a drop shadow to the bottom ribbon layer. Because the letters are acrylic, it wouldn't have looked real to just have one ribbon layer and erase the parts that were underneath. This technique was a good solution.

Life Muses by Ro: Lost Vacation Photo

Note from Ro: Here's a great post from Melanie Johnson I found on the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures Blog. It's a wonderful reminder of why we should unearth our vacation photos, scrap them, and put them in books to enjoy.

divider

As I was doing some layouts the other day and searching for the perfect photo, I came across this picture of my two oldest boys on a wonderful old tire swing at Hilton Head, SC. We took that family trip last fall but I don’t think I scrapped any photos from it. Finding this photo was like finding buried treasure: I spent several minutes clicking through each of them, wishing that I had taken the time to do something more with them.

Unfortunately, far too many of the photos I take remain buried in cyberspace. You'd think that as a digital scrapbooker I would be better about putting them in albums, but as the number of photos I take has increased, my ability to scrap them all has definitely decreased!

We’ll be heading down to Georgia for a week tomorrow for another family vacation, and this time I am vowing to do a better job of capturing those memories for posterity. My boys really love sitting down with their "ScrapBoy" books, and a few layouts documenting their first camping trip, 4-wheeler rides with their cousins, and freshly caught fish from the pond will make some great pages.

I used the newly revamped Refresh 2 Collection Biggie and a background paper from the Canada Collection Biggie for this layout. If you haven't yet seen the new Refresh kit, check it out. It's free and perfect for summer layouts!

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates

Note: Screenshots were created in Adobe Photoshop CS3.

I have to admit that I had been rather nervous about writing my first Way Cool Stuff article. But, all hesitation left when I learned that the product I would be reviewing is ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. Up until a few months ago, I had never used these wonderful products. Of course, I had purchased several from the boutique, but I had never pulled them out of my vast stash of scrapbooking supplies and actually put them to use. It only took one layout to win me over. Let me introduce you to these wonderful tools, if you haven’t already discovered them!

Amanda Sok’s ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates – Layered: Tattered was just calling out my name. I had several photos of my daughter’s wedding that I knew would be just perfect for this template.

Screenshot: Layered document

To start, I opened the folder that contained all the PNG files and placed each file on a separate layer, being careful to keep them in order. I also labeled them so I would easily know which layer I was working on. Then I saved my document.

Screenshot: Clipped papers and photos

Then came the fun part! I chose my papers and photos and used a clipping mask to attach each paper or photo to the appropriate layer. Here is what my desktop looked like at that point.

Digital layout templates are so versatile. You may decide to leave out a layer, rotate a layer, or mix several different digital templates together. The possibilities are endless. So, don’t think you will only use the template one time. You will be able to use it over and over again.

Screenshot: Added Folded Photo Embellishment Templates

In this case, I liked the placement of my photos and the softened appearance of the torn papers. However, I wanted my photos to have an aged and worn look. This was easy to accomplish. I simply replaced the original photo frames with several photo frames from Theresa Kavouras’ ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Folds 2. I’m pleased with the result.

At this point, it was just a matter of adding embellishments, journaling, word art and a title. I like to think of digital templates as the basic pieces of a wardrobe. They are a smart investment and remain classic and timeless. These classics can be used again and again to achieve a variety of looks. By accessorizing, I am able to create many different styles all from a few basic wardrobe pieces. I can be serious, romantic, fun or wild just by switching up my jewelry or shoes. It allows me to express my personality and individuality. So, go to the boutique, find a digital layout template you would like to try on, and remember... one size fits all!

In no time at all, my layout was complete. Here’s the final layout for you to see.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
