“Girlfriends” layout by Stefanie Harris
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to simulate the look of engraved metal for the date “slide” on this layout. The first step was to create the slide using the SSTools – Shapes: Slides by Cherise Oleson. To this, I applied Erica Hite’s SSTools – Styles: Brushed Aluminum and, using a Color Overlay (reduce the Opacity and apply “Overlay” Blend Mode within the style dialogue box), made it look like brass rather than aluminum. Then I added a text layer, typed out the date, and applied Erica’s SSTools – Styles: Punch Out to it. Again, I opened the layer style dialogue box and adjusted the colors of the highlights so it looked engraved, but not overly beveled.

“Aaron’s First Siddur” layout by Jo Corne

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To ‘cut’ Aaron out of his photo and make him ‘pop’ out of the frame, I duplicated the photo layer. Then, using my Pen Tool, I traced the outline of Aaron. I converted the drawn path to a selection, inversed the selection and deleted the selection leaving only Aaron in the photo on the top layer. I then erased the part of the photo that was not clipped to Syndee Nuckles’ ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Clusters 2.

“Preachin’ Cowboy Style” layout by Launa Valente

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
For this layout, I really liked the western style of the Durango Alpha, but the color blended in too much with the other elements. So to keep the alpha, I applied a silver style. Perfect!

“Sweet Dreams” layout by Pat Bowman
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To color the Rhinestone, I first duplicated the Rhinestone layer. On the top layer, I added a Color Overlay Style, sampled an aqua color from my photo and then changed the Blend Mode of the Color Overlay Style to “Multiply.” Then I changed the Blend Mode of the layer to “Overlay,” merged the two layers together and dragged it onto my layout to place on the flower.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

A Designers Life: Amanda Sok |
Over The Hill
My father turns 50 on June 22nd. For weeks I have been going back and forth about what to get him. He's a hard person to buy for. He's a tool guy, but I know nothing about tools and I'm pretty certain that he owns most of the tools that he wants and needs. He's not really into clothes. He likes shoes, but only certain kinds - and he usually buys new ones before he runs a marathon. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out what to get him. My step-mother has a surprise party planned. I surely can't show up to a 50th surprise party empty handed!
The thing he loves the most is anything I make for him that is scrapbook related... especially anything containing pictures of my brother and me growing up. My parents are divorced and my mother got all of our family pictures. My father was nice enough not to make a fuss over them and let her have them. The few that I’ve been able to borrow from her, I've scanned and made my dad some digital layouts utilizing those pictures. I usually make him something at least once a year. I could make him something for his birthday. But, no, I wanted something BIG, something amazing, something to show him how much I appreciate all that he's done for me, something to mark a special birthday.
There is one thing I do know about. Computers! My father owns two computers. One is a desktop that my husband built many years ago. I can't imagine how he gets anything done on it. The other is my old laptop. Every computer or monitor in my father’s possession is a hand-me-down. I realized that I wanted to get him a new, shiny laptop. He's given me so much over the years - from a car when I had nothing, to support and a helping hand when he knew I needed it. After all that my father has given me, I'm in a place currently in my life where I can give to him. Not just a computer, but a token of my appreciation.
So, after shopping around, there it was, a brand new laptop with three gigs of RAM, 250 gig hard drive, dual core processor and a brilliant screen. It'll be so fast compared to his dinosaurs that he won’t know what to do with himself! It still felt like just an expensive gift though. I decided to make him a wallpaper to replace the boring, impersonal one that occupied the screen. I gathered up some old photos from my mother, scanned them and designed a new wallpaper. I stared at it for awhile deciding what it should say. In the end, I think the pictures spoke for themselves. After I switched out the wallpaper, it was no longer just a new laptop. It was the perfect gift of gratitude that I had been searching for.
Happy 50th birthday, Daddy.
- Amanda

Favorite product I've designed:
Fanciful Collection Mini

I wanted to do a pure black and white collection for awhile. I wanted it to be pretty, but useful, and still have some texture to the papers. I think it’s an easy collection to use because everything goes with black and white! It’s also useful because you can recolor black and white items so easily to go along with your pictures.

Project and Printable Ideas:

- Use the Brush Set: Victorian Frame to print out invitations or “menus” and place cards for a tea party or bridal shower.
- Make your own origami paper.
- The ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Victorian Trading Card could be used to make little “Lunch Box Notes,” or print them out and put them on a ring for a mini address book or “special occasion” reminder (include pictures of the person, along with birthdays and anniversaries, etc.).
- Use the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Far East and ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Asian Effect, along with Erica Hite's Fortune Cookie Craft Templates for a gift or themed party favors. The ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Asian Fans can be used as place cards to complete the look.

Mini Tutorial: Creating your Own Journaling Cards
-
Stamp the Brush Set: Victorian Frame of your choice on a new layer onto a plain piece of paper or other embellishment. (I was able to only stamp on the paper and not the ribbon because I used my Magic Wand Tool to select only my paper before I stamped my image.)
-
Use your Magic Wand Tool to select the inside of your frame. Go to Selections> Modify> Contract and enter a number. This will give space from the inside edge of your frame to the beginning of your journaling lines. I chose 25.
-
On a new layer, stamp the lines from the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Victorian Trading Card inside your selected area.
- If the lines do not cover your selected area, make a new layer and stamp them again in the uncovered space. Repeat as many times as needed to cover your selected area. You can use your Move Tool to nudge your lines into an equally spaced position. Once your lines are where you want them, merge your line layers together.

-
Because of the curvy edges of the inside of your journaling card, you may end up with stray pieces of line that stamped inside crevices or “bubbles” of selected area. Simply erase the parts you don’t want!
-
Because I like the look of faint journaling lines, I lowered the Opacity of my lines layer to 25%.

Whether you travel on vacation or entertain right in your own backyard, summertime means fun! This month, we'll be having some fun as we play Layout Reveal!
Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout that is partially covered in a message board thread. A new section of the layout will be revealed each day until someone correctly guesses which layout it is. Layouts will be found in the boutique on product details pages.
If you are the first to guess one of the layouts correctly, you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique!

Layout Contests:
July Layout Contest: Is the high cost of traveling keeping you close to home this summer? For this layout contest, we want you to be a tourist in your own town. Do a layout of your favorite place to visit in or near your town, a place you like to take out-of-towners when they visit, or an historical landmark. Upload your layouts to the July Layout Gallery by July 31st at midnight and if your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Mid-June Layout Contest: What kind of candy would you be? Scrap a layout that shows what you think you’d be - something sweet but tart, something rich and chocolatey, or something nutty? Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
