I have four children. The last are identical twin girls; mirror image, no less. I took many, many pictures of them. Now, my children are in their forties. I have wanted to scrapbook them, but the pictures have gone here and there. So, I set out to scan a lifetime of pictures, to the age of eighteen anyway.
Mind you, I knew who each twin was when I put everything away for future posterity. If you think it is now impossible to tell those babies apart, it does not get any easier as they grow older. I asked them the other day who was who when they were in their twenties. They said, “Cathee, see the wedding ring? Cristee was not yet married.” Even now, we sometimes have a hard time. I could tell you lots of stories, but then I would be digressing.
What is the point of this you ask? Well, I look at scrapbook pages all of the time, even those my girls put together. They don’t have any names! We are, after all, putting these books together for future generations, right? We are told everything will last 200 years. I ask myself, how do they know since nothing we use has been around 200 years? Early negatives I have of the children have been around for 42 years. I have some negatives that have been around at least 60 years, so I guess we can take their word for it.
I started ten years ago with my ancestors. I put full names, even maiden names, under each photo and if not on the front page, at least a sticker on the back of the page. I then put an ancestral chart at the back of each book. Even though I am working now on "live" people, I am continuing the practice. After I am gone, I don't want these books to go into the trash because no one knows who these people are. If you don't think that will happen, I know by experience that it does. When my mother died, I found a book that I didn't know she had. I recognized very few people, so in the trash it went. It is so sad because I know they were neighbors and school chums that I knew as older people and it would have been a fun experience seeing who they might have been.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: Sara A. |
Once again, as on so many other nights, I cannot sleep. My sleep deprivation is getting worse and worse despite the fact that my wonderful female doctor, who understands me, gave me drugs to help me sleep. They work - for about an hour and then I am suddenly wide awake while everyone else in my house sleeps peacefully and is not even aware that Mom is up and at her computer. When my dear, sweet husband's head hits the pillow, he is immediately in deep sleep, snoring within seconds. When my head hits the pillow, racing thoughts of what I haven't done today that needed to be done and what I now have piled on top of that for tomorrow to do. This has been going on for years now and I am ready for it to stop. But, evidently, stress is going to be a part of my life for a few more years to come.
I lost my ability to sleep when our next-to-last foster child came to us at three weeks old. The memory of that day is as clear as the bright, shiny sky - it's huge - it's heart-rending - because when they placed that tiny little bundle in my arms I was in love from that moment on. It didn't matter to me at the time that he was a crack baby, that he was born with fetal alcohol syndrome, would more than likely be ADHD as he got older. All I could think of was, "we've had over 30 foster children in our home over the years, we can fix this problem."
Months went by and with every month there was a new problem - he had to be seen by neurologists, have brain scans for which they had to sedate him because he was like a wild man when we went to the doctor - flailing his little arms and screaming and biting me and kicking me. He had what they called "rage attacks" - not anything like a two-year-old temper tantrum. They put him on medications that only made things worse.
I began buying books that talked about his diagnoses and educated myself to the point that I knew more than some of the doctors did. I learned that his problematic life was going to change all of our lives radically for the next few years. At first, I was saddened by the fact that he had all of these problems because his biological mother did drugs while he was in utereo. My sadness turned quickly to anger because this was a precious little life who did not ask to be born with all of these problems and that I could read every book written on his diagnoses and I still couldn't "fix" it for him. He did not deserve this, but I also knew that God, not DSS, chose us to have him for a reason and we weren't about to give up on a challenge that God had sent to us. We also had three other biological children who were growing up and starting families of their own.
We learned early on that he was a "right-brainer" and from the age of three and up, he could build magnificent things from Lego or K'Nex - big things, like Ferris wheels and huge motorized cars that actually worked and he did it all by looking at the pictures because he couldn't read then. He was amazing. At two, we could be anywhere within 20 miles of home and he could tell us exactly how to get home.
I had to be awake or sleeping very lightly every night because he would get up in the middle of the night and rummage around the house destroying anything he could get his hands on. "Put him in a home," Social Services would say. Our response was always, are you kidding me? We love this child - no one can take better care of him than we do. We were appalled that they would recommend such a thing.
Decision made, the days ahead turned into the most difficult days of our marriage. Fortunately, we had a strong marriage or we never would have survived the ordeals we were about to go through with this child. It could be compared to the life of a caregiver of an Alzheimer’s patient - we could never take our eyes off of him. If he wasn't physically and mentally hurting us, he was hurting himself by doing things like banging his head against the wall, scratching sores into his skin and biting me and himself very hard.
We spent those days one by one - hoping and praying that the next day would be easier, but it never was. It just got harder and then he became a teenager and add to the list of diagnoses - adolescence and hormones. We worked hard - I was at his school every day, usually helping in another classroom so that I was, at least, physically on campus for him. We had an enormous support group in his teachers, principal and our family. My sleeping mechanisms just started shutting down completely. We were still sure that we could get through it all and that our love and devotion could run circles around his problems.
And so, for 17 years now, we have all grown and learned coping mechanisms, which battles to choose, how to motivate a child who has no motivation towards school whatsoever, teach this beautiful at-risk baby how to learn social cues and how to manage his problems. We probably managed to reach our goal by about 75%, but I never learned to sleep again. I did not like being the only person awake in my home in the wee hours of the night - it was so long and I was so tired. I had to remind myself daily that God never gives us more than we can handle, but I have to tell you - there were days when I questioned God.
My "hating being awake all night alone" ended when I found Scrap Girls! I had been a graphic artist for years and worked from my home - but I always tried to make it a regular work day. Once I started scrapping digitally and became completely addicted to it, I found peace and solace in those sleepless nights because I would just get up, get him back to his "semi-sleep" status and then I would hit the computer and work non-stop all night long. I no longer dreaded being the only one awake - I kind of enjoyed it because I could design all night with no interruptions and I was always "on-call" and ready should he wake up.
So, thank you Scrap Girls for bringing me comfort when you didn't even know I needed it, for bringing me joy with all of the wonderful products from which to choose, for bringing me friends that I had never met but would grow to know because the staff you have is wonderful and Angie especially just seemed to always be there for me. I hope to meet her someday. She is an angel and a credit to your company. Thank you, Scrap Girls, for putting life back into me when I was so tired and could not sleep but I COULD while away the stressful hours designing my pages. I visited a lot of clubs before I found you and they don't begin to compare with Scrap Girls staff and members.
Our son just celebrated his 18th birthday. He takes his meds, acts like a normal kid and is so loved - oh, is he ever loved by his mom and dad. The neatest part is that he loves us back. He is an amazing artist, plays the guitar (kind of), has a girlfriend and is going to school even though it is very hard for him. He now wants to do what I do - he wants to learn PSE6, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. He is also today's 18 year-old - wears clothes I hate, has his hair much longer than I like, can be disrespectful and he smokes. But those are battles I choose not to fight anymore because there are worse things he could be doing. I thank God every day for helping me decide which battles to choose. I could not have done it alone because one minute he is a loving, gentle soul and the next minute he is like a Pit Bull.
It is very hard for people who have never been around children like this to understand our predicament at times, but we have fortunately been able to handle that, too. We explain only what we need to and leave it at that. He is our son - we adopted him when he was 14 months-old and hated that we had to wait that long because we were madly in love with this child and his problems and we made a commitment to him that we would always be here for him - and we will be. Just like I know Scrap Girls is always out there for me.
Thank you, Scrap Girls, for motivating me and giving me comfort that you didn't even know I needed. I am happy to be a part of such a wonderful club.
