Life Muses by Ro: Blessings Project - Hands

This is another installment of my Blessings Album Project. The intent is to remember how much I have been given. What better way to do this than through digital scrapbooking? Through this medium, I am able to combine photographs and stories in an engaging way. I would like to invite you to join me in creating your own Blessings Album. If you’d like to share your digital scrapbooking layouts with us, it would be great. We’ve opened a special area of the Scrap Girls gallery just for this purpose.

“Squeak, squeak, squeak,” the springs of my horse sang as I rocked back and forth in time to the music. My mother taught piano lessons to neighborhood children and I was enamored.

“Teach me too, Mommy,” I cried.

Sometimes, as she taught her students, I stood at the end of the piano and longed for my own fingers to push the black and white keys in the proper order. I wanted to play the melodies I heard on my records. I wanted to be like the girls that sat on the piano bench and played, “Für Elise.”

“Teach me too, Mommy. Teach me too!”

One important day, Mom sat me on the bench beside her and began. She showed me that the black keys came in groups of two and three and had me find all of the groups. She put the first finger of my right hand on the D# and the first finger of my left hand on the C# and then music started. We sang along. “We are going higher, higher, higher, higher,” our voices chimed.  “Now we’re going lower, lower, lower, lower, lower, lower,” we croaked.

My little fingers went up and down the keyboard as they played every set of black keys on it. It was just the first of many lessons. By the time I went to junior high, I was able to play the organ at church and could handle difficult music by Mozart, Grieg and Beethoven. Much to my father’s delight, my skills allowed me to accompany myself when I sang his favorite Broadway tunes.

Life became filled with hand-movement: Fingers threading locks of gold into fat braids tied at the bottom with elastics. Crocheting a vest as one hand held a hook and the other held the yard yarn. Needles clicking together as hands wove in and out. Fingers learning to hold a needle still in one hand while other hand attempted to steer embroidery thread through the tiny slit of the needle’s eye. One hand holding fabric stretched tight with a hoop as fingers on the other hand poked the needle in and out of the fabric, creating flowers as it moved.

These hands and fingers continued helped me to grow and learn as together we made cookies, tickled my brother, held the hand of my first boyfriend, wrote essays and assignments in school, learned to type, and take care of my personal needs.

But my hands loved to make music best of all. They gladly strummed the guitar, held a violin and bow, moved the keys on a saxophone, flute and piccolo, pressed the keys on the piano and organ, and flipped sticks back and forth as I hit the metal keys of the chimes. My hands and fingers were happy participants, in filling the air with sound and my heart with the happiness.

As a married woman, my hands reached for my newborn babies, caught runaway toddlers, soothed tears of children learning how to cope with the outside world, cooked endless meals and folded laundry. My hands rubbed the stubble on my husband’s prickly pre-shave morning face, tickled his back and ran their fingers through his curly hair as we watched TV together.

My hands were there, helping small hands of children perched on a piano bench, to understand that the instrument’s black keys are grouped in twos and threes. Two of my fingers demonstrated for my charges that if I travel up the keyboard, the sound climbs higher, higher, higher and higher. If I move my hands down the keyboard, the pitch goes lower, lower, lower and lower.

Shortly after I began Scrap Girls, I had wrist surgery. The recovery period required that I not move my left hand at all. Everything became very difficult to accomplish. Some things were impossible to do. It was during my recovery that I transitioned from paper scrapbooking to digital scrapbooking because I could use my mouse. When I finally received permission to use my left hand again, my heart was filled with such appreciation for my hands that I’ll never see them in the same way again.

My hands carry my life. I am blessed.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for my hands.

Tutorial: Scrap Girl-ify your iGoogle Homepage

Did you know that Google offers several ways to help you stay connected to your favorite websites? I enjoy my iGoogle homepage, which is the first thing I see every time I sign onto my computer. My iGoogle homepage features everything from snippets from the Scrap Girls message board to the latest products in the Scrap Girls boutique to weather in my area. Here's how I did it.

Screenshot: Sign up for a Google account

First, sign up for a Google account at https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount. If you already have one, you'll be able to sign in on this page, too. To sign up with a new account, you'll have to provide the standard information, such as an email address and a password of your choice. Once you have an account, you will notice on the main Google page that there is a link in the upper right hand corner that says “iGoogle.” Click on this.

Screenshot: Pick theme

You will then get a page that is likely to look like this. Go ahead and pick your interests and a theme. Don't worry if your interests aren't listed, everything can be edited and changed, as I will show you in just a moment. Then click “See your page.”

Screenshot: Your iGoogle page

Now, your iGoogle page will be shown. While you are welcome to leave your page like this, you may wish to make some changes. To rearrange the placement of items on your page, you simply drag and drop the title bars. If you have items on it that you don't have an interest in, you can also click the small “X” on the title bars to delete them. There are also tabs that you can organize more information on. You can delete the tabs, rename them or add new ones. There are also many more “themes” (looks) available for your iGoogle page – everything from the solar system to cartoon characters. There's something for everyone.

Screenshot: Add the Scrap Girls message board feed

Here's where the real fun comes in – time to Scrap Girl-ify your iGoogle page! On the left (near the themes link) you will see a link that says “Add Stuff.” Click on the link and on the page that appears you will find lots of things you can place on your iGoogle page. There are games, tools, news and more. Located on the left side you will notice a link that says “Add feed or gadget.” Feeds, also known as RSS feeds, XML feeds, syndicated content or web feeds, contain frequently updated content published by a website – Scrap Girls is one such site. Click on “Add feed or gadget” and a little box will pop up and you will be able to add in the web address for any feed. Type or paste the web address for the Scrap Girls message board in this spot and click “Add.” It should give you a little “check mark” and a message in the box that says the feed was added.

Screenshot: Add the Scrap Girls designer blog feed

Now, you can add your other Scrap Girls feeds. Scrap Girls has two blogs which you'll want to be sure to add. One is a collaborative blog where all the Scrap Girls product designers posts little tidbits about their life. Once again, click to “Add feed or gadget” and type or paste the Scrap Girls blog address into the box: http://scrapgirls.typepad.com and then click “Add.”

The next feed you'll enjoy having easy access to is the Scrap Girls What's New Blog. This blog is updated six days a week, usually several times a day, with all of the newest products in the Scrap Girls boutique. Following the same steps as above, add the following web address for the Scrap Girls What's New Blog:

http://scrapgirls.typepad.com/scrapgirls_boutique/

After you add these web addresses into the feed or gadget box, return to your iGoogle home where you can check your feeds and edit them as necessary. You'll notice that each title header has a down arrow. By clicking on this you can edit settings and choose how many topics you want to show. Since I can't get enough of Scrap Girls, I choose the maximum setting of nine topics for each one. You can also rearrange each feed on the page so they are placed in a way that is appealing to you. You can even read more of the topic right on your iGoogle page by simply clicking on the little plus + sign next to each topic to expand it. If you want to read the whole post, just click on the title.

The last step is to add iGoogle as your homepage. Having iGoogle as your homepage means that every time you use your browser to view the Internet, iGoogle will be the first page that shows up. There are many different browsers and ways to change your homepage, but here are a couple of the most common choices:

Screenshot: Make iGoogle your home page in Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 6 or 7: While on your iGoogle page, click on the “Tools” menu on your toolbar and then “Internet Options.” Under the “General” tab, click “Use Current” and then click “OK.”

Screenshot: Make iGoogle your home page in Firefox

In Mozilla Firefox 3: With your iGoogle page open in Mozilla, click on “Tools,” then “Options” and then “Use Current Page” and finally click “OK.”

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to setting up your iGoogle page – the possibilities are endless! Have fun, add more stuff that interests you and you'll have a great homepage keeping you up to date on all of the latest of the Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking website.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Opportunities for You!

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
