Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Don’t you just love it when all the pieces of a layout come together? For me, it is finding the perfect embellishment to complement my design. This is made easy by using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates to get everything right!

For this layout, the first thing I did was open Syndee Nuckles’ ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Borderline and sized it to fit the inside square. Then, I used the shape feature in PSE6 to create two rectangles – one in aqua and the other in brown. To get the exact color I wanted, I used the Eyedropper Tool to pick out colors from my background layer. Next, I positioned my rectangles over the templates and “cut” out my design by using the Ctrl+G shortcut in PSE6 (“Group with Previous” Command). Finally, I merged the brown flowers onto the aqua background to create the perfect element to match my layout.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

First, I duplicated all the layers of the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Color Wheels and increased the size of one set to have a double-row wheel. I clipped (Ctrl+Alt+G) the pictures to the different parts and made both outline layers invisible. I also highlighted two parts by moving them out of the circle and slightly increasing their size.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates are some of my absolute favorite supplies to use. They are so versatile because you can mix and match them with each other, apply styles to different parts of them and color and recolor them over and over again.

In this layout, I took one of Syndee’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates – Scattered Pictures and brought it over onto my layout. This time, I decided to take the white frame layer of the template and apply Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Aged Folds 5001 to the frame. I then moved onto the paper clip layer and applied Durin’s ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Old Metal 5101.

“Now & Forever” layout by Stefanie Harris

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Sometimes, when placing elements on your page, you find they need to be “anchored.” This can be done visually – by adding “weight” to a certain portion of the element (adding journaling, adding a drop shadow, changing the size, etc.), or more literally. On this layout, I literally anchored the pearl frame cluster from Brandy’s Nuptials Collection Biggie by placing vellum circles behind them, then cutting slots to “thread” the ribbon through. This gives the page a more realistic look, by having the frames “held” onto the page by the ribbon, rather than just floating there. (Be sure to zoom in really close and use a small, sharp brush point to erase the area where you want your slot to appear.)

Other Ingredients:

  • Font - Scrap Cursive (journaling)
  • Font - Nuptials Script (“9th” on date tag)

Journaling:  Being married has never been what I would call “easy.” Even harder, though, is staying married. I look at these pictures of you... so young... my own daughter is not much younger than the two of you here. You had just begun to write the story of your life together. Through wars and peace, raising children, and constant moving, you never faltered. You are an amazing example of patience, sacrifice, and unconditional love!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I decided my layout needed a bit of pizzazz. I opened Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Curves and selected a swirl I liked. I created a duplicate file to work with by choosing Image> Duplicate from the top menu and closed my original file. Next, I dragged the swirl PNG file onto my layout, placing it under my striped journaling paper layer. In order to create a second swirl, I used the “Duplicate” shortcut of Ctrl+J. This placed a second swirl on the layer above my first swirl. You could also highlight the swirl layer and choose Layer> Duplicate Layer from your menu. To make my third swirl face the opposite direction, I went back to my swirl PNG file. I chose Image> Rotate Canvas> Flip Canvas Horizontal from the menu and dragged the swirl onto my layout. Lastly, I simply added a glitter style to each of my swirl layers. Voila... instant pizzazz!

Life Muses by Ro: Mr. Bean Meets a Columbine

Note from Ro: Ursula made this post on the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures Blog recently. What a crack-up! I had to make sure you saw it.

divider

In our desert, it is HOT, HOT, HOT. One result of such high temperatures is that not many things grow. So, it is with great pleasure that I was able to grow my Columbine plant. (We won't discuss just now the blackness of my thumbs and the miracle of any plants' growth at all!) So, I'd like to show you the lovely Columbine plant that I was able to produce.

Photo: Columbine

It's quite stunning, for a plant in the desert. Okay, maybe stunning is not the right word, but I must tell you that I am proud of it.

Another event in our family's recent history is the addition to our home of the world's cutest puppy ever. Meet Bean! (Mr. Bean, Bean-boy, Beano, String Bean, Baby Bean)

Photo: Bean the Boxer

Bean is a Boxer/Lab mix and I must tell you that I am truly in love with him. I've wanted a Boxer puppy for a while and when Bean came along, the timing and circumstances were nothing less than perfect.

Now, why am I telling you about these two, unrelated portions of creation? Well, as you may imagine, these two favored bits of my life have had the opportunity to meet and, shall I say, interact. Bean, having been placed outside, felt it was within his power to redecorate my poor pot of posies... the result is a rather sad mess.

Photo: Columbine Pesto

Photo: Sad Bean

The life lesson? I believe it is sometimes the case that good things come to an end and other good things have a beginning and, at times, the two good things simply cannot coexist and so one must let go of the first to gain the second. Hence, I have had to say goodbye to the pretty posies and hello to a big wet kiss from little Bean!

But there is another lesson hiding here. It is the lesson that one should take a photo or two of everything that makes any impact on your life, because if you don't, you'll have missed the illustration for your next digital scrapbooking page. I can see the title of this one, "Life Lessons-101, A Class with Bean Schneider.” I was so glad that I had photographed my Columbine at its peak. Now I can enjoy it anytime at all and Bean doesn't have to get sick on the carpet from too much Columbine Pesto.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates

Note: Screenshots were created in Adobe Photoshop CS3.

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates are so versatile and I love them! I find myself using them often on my layouts to complement the designer’s collection and to create my own embellishments to fit the exact color scheme of my layout.

One set of items that I use often are Theresa Kavouras’ ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fancy Folds. For my sample layout, I used ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fancy Folds 4. I love using them with patterned or striped paper on the fold and I challenge myself to make them look very realistic. Here is how I proceed.

Screenshot: Align paper for first fold

First, I place my striped paper on top of the fold under the gradient layer. I use Thao Cosgrove’s Pretty Primavera Collection. With the Move Tool (Ctrl+T), I rotate the paper, move the bottom edge until it aligns with the fold, and clip the striped paper to the fold with Ctrl+Alt+G.

Screenshot: Align paper for second fold

Then, I duplicate the striped paper layer and move it above the second fold, under the gradient layer. Again, with the Move Tool (Ctrl+T), I rotate it slightly and move the paper to align it with the fold. This time, I pay attention to placing the stripes correctly, which means that the torn stripe ending on the first fold has to be the stripe which is first on the second fold. I clip the paper to the fold with Ctrl+Alt+G.

Screenshot: Align paper for third fold

For the last fold, it is easier to clip the paper to the fold before rotating and moving it. I repeat the same steps as for the second fold. At the end, you can adjust the lightness of the shadow layer under Image> Adjustment> Hue and Saturation (“Colorize” box checked and foreground color picked from the pink background paper).

This is the final layout.

  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
