Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

The focal picture in my layout started out as somewhat of a mistake. Haley was being a bit, erm, “camera shy,” and I ended up capturing her as she ducked out of the frame. As I looked at it more closely, however, I decided it sums up her personality perfectly... and that cropping out all the extra space on the right side of the photo would diminish that.

When you have “extra” space like this in a photo, why not use it as an element in and of itself? By using the grassy area as my journaling block, I maintain the feeling of the picture, and cut down on the number of elements I have to add to my page. This page was super-simple to put together, but is still visually interesting! (I added my signature at the bottom of the journaling using my Wacom pen and tablet.)

Journaling: Okay... so it wasn’t all smiles on this particular day. You are such an animated child, and it isn’t difficult to know exactly how you’re feeling at any given point. But, BABY! When you smile, the whole world lights up. The sun seems brighter. Everyone feels happy. Not to put you under too much pressure or anything, but could you just smile ALL the time? Just sayin’.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

In order to substitute another title for the original title of the layout template, I did not add that layer of the template to my layout. Instead, I chose an alpha from Dinny’s Cozy Collection; however, the alphas had a white paper background that I did not want to use.

I opened my “B” alpha file, chose Image> Duplicate and closed my original file. Next, I chose my Magic Wand Tool with “Contiguous” checked. I clicked on the white background and marching ants appeared around the outside border of the “B.” I made sure my “add to selection” was highlighted on the tool bar and clicked on the white closed areas within the letter “B.” Then, I hit Delete. Next, I used the Move Tool to drag my alpha onto my layout. I repeated this process with the other letters, but there was no need to use the “add to selection” with these letters.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the look of ‘water’ falling into my cup, I used one of Dinny Miller’s ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Waves 3801 and rotated it into position. I then filled the wave with the Cloudy paper from Brandy Murry’s gorgeous RainDance Collection. To use the shape as a type area, I used my Magic Wand to highlight the wave, then created a new layer. I used the Path drop-down menu to turn the highlighted wave outline into a path and finally, using my Text Tool, clicked inside the path and started typing.

There was a water theme to this birthday party. To reinforce that theme, you can create realistic water very easily using ScrapSimple Tools and Styles. All you have to do is open ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: WaterDrops 5301 Biggie, select the drops you want and bring them onto your layout. Load ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Water 6101 and apply the style to the drop shape. Instantly, it looks as though there was water spilled on your layout. It couldn’t be easier or less messy! I thought the blues of the papers in the Becoming Collection would highlight my granddaughter’s beautiful blue eyes. To bring attention to her eyes, I duplicated my photo and then applied the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Distressed Photo Sepia 1801 Mini to the top layer. Then I added a layer mask to this layer, chose a soft round brush and painted with black on the layer mask to reveal her blue eyes from the bottom layer. Remember when working with layer masks, “Black to Reveal and White to Conceal.” Once I was through, I merged the two layers and placed the photo on my layout.

A Designers Life: Melanie Johnson

Trust Your Inner Artist

As the mom of three small boys, I could tell you what my days are like attempting to raise them and work creatively, but I suspect that many of you, especially those of you with small children yourself, can fill in most of the blanks. The short version is that my life is very sticky - literally - and I’m constantly challenged to find enough time to be creative. Let’s don’t even talk about the state of my house!

No, today I want to tell the story of a young girl who enjoyed drawing pictures on her prized chalkboard as she taught her dolls their ABC's. This little girl grew into an adolescent who created a Georgia history scrapbook in seventh grade that was the envy of her classmates. She’d given up drawing years ago, since it had become apparent that her brother was much more talented in that area than she was, but she still loved the creative pursuit in assembling scrapbooks and she made many with enthusiasm as more years passed. Photography became her favorite hobby and she looked forward to checking the mail each day for a blue and white Clark’s envelope filled with her latest photos.

As more years passed, the girl - who had now become a young woman - continued to take photos: first of her friends, then more and more of the landscape. She found herself living in Montana, far from her Georgia roots and family, and suddenly her mother became the one looking forward to receiving photos in the mail. In addition to photography, the young woman realized that she had instinctively surrounded herself with creative people: she worked as the editor of a magazine, donated her time to the support of a local reading series, and had lots of friends who were artists or authors themselves. She interviewed and wrote articles about creative people. She even wrote letters home on paper she’d made herself with handmade deckles. But if anyone had asked her whether she thought of herself as creative, she would have immediately responded with an emphatic no. Her mindset seemed to be that if she was doing it - whatever “it” was - it couldn’t be art.

Fast-forward five more years to a young, thirty-something woman employed by a software company in a very right-brained environment. While successfully managing a staff of editors, whose very jobs existed because of rules and precision, she found herself using her free time to teach herself how to create Polaroid transfers and stained glass, planting morning glories on an indoor trellis she placed in the dining room of her apartment, and spending outrageous amounts of money in art supply stores.

But do you know what? She still would have said no if you’d asked her if she were an artist. She would have downplayed any of her art store purchases as just foolish indulgences from someone who had too much time and money on her hands, while continuing to admire from afar those of her friends who were self-described artists.

As she married, had her first baby, and began a career as a stay-at-home mom, both time and money began to be in shorter supply. The creative urges that once fueled her pastimes were set aside for maintaining a home and caring for her growing family. Acrylic paints were set aside for finger paints; sketchbooks neglected for storybooks instead. A series of failed work-from-home creative pursuits made her wonder whether she would ever find the right niche.

Then she discovered Scrap Girls.

In just a couple of days’ time, she began to amass a collection of digital scrapbooking supplies to rival her art supply stash and she was hooked. The more pages she completed, the more her confidence increased in herself. Slowly, she began to see an artist reflected back at her from her computer screen: an artist whose voice - although she had successfully managed to minimize it for most of her life - could still be heard.

I, of course, am the girl/young woman/mother of this little story. In spite of the fact that I surrounded myself with creative friends and art supplies my entire life, I didn’t really have the courage to fully trust my instincts until I found Scrap Girls and the incredible community that Ro has created online. My story is proof that if you have the courage to listen to that creative voice inside you, you can achieve your heart’s desire with a little encouragement and help from your friends. Thanks to Scrap Girls, I have both, and have never felt more creatively fulfilled in my entire life.

  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
