Life Muses by Ro: People Pleezers Anonymous

People Pleezers Anonymous

President: Calling to order today’s meeting of the People Pleezers Society. Will everyone please take their seats?

Secretary: Madam President. Point of order, if I may...

President: You may.

Secretary: You said “please.” Please don’t say please. According to the bylaws of our society, you are forbidden to use the word “please” in any of your communications with group members.

President: Oh dear. I’m so sorry. I did do that, didn’t I? Will you forgive me?

Secretary: Of course. (looking at audience) We will all forgive Madam President, won’t we? We all just want to be friends.

Audience: Of course we will. You’re forgiven. It was just a small gaffe.

Secretary: You see, Madam President? We are all in agreement. You have been forgiven. So, please... move forward with the meeting now.

President: Pl-pl-pl.... You just said...

Secretary: (looking up from her notebook) You wanted me, Madam President? Did you have a question?

President: N-n-nooo. I guess not. It’s just that I thought I heard you say something. But I guess I was wrong. Yes... that is it. I was wrong. So sorry to have troubled you. Please forgive me.

Secretary: No trouble. But please, Madam President... for the sake of everyone in this room... I beg you to stop using the forbidden word.

President: Which is...?

Secretary: Oh please, Madam President! Don’t tell me that you have forgotten what it is now? You are throwing it around so carelessly and yet, you insist that you can’t remember what it is.

President: It’s just that I’m not sure now. I mean... if you are using it... then maybe I am confused about which word I am not supposed to be using.

Secretary: Me? Using the forbidden word? Please, Madam President, really! I think you’ve forgotten who I am.

President: You are the founder of the society.

Secretary: Exactly.

President: And you decided what the rules of the society would be?

Secretary: That’s right.

President: And you asked me to be the very first president because you thought it would be a nice way for me to practice standing up for myself?

Secretary: You seem to remember everything so well. But you are failing to remember that since we are a society of individuals who are straining to overcome our tendency to desire to please everyone we come in contact with, even if it often distracts us from our true purpose in life and even if it makes us completely miserable, we have forbidden the use of the word “please” from all written and verbal communications. Your failure to conform to this mandate makes me wonder if I have done the correct thing in nominating you to become our president.

President: I’m so sorry. I’ll try to do better. Will you forgive me?

Secretary: (looks at audience) Should we forgive our president?

Audience: Yes! Please... let’s forgive her. Don’t be harsh. Let’s all be friends. She didn’t mean any harm. Please get this over with ladies... this discussion is getting a little tiresome.

Secretary: The members have spoken. You are forgiven.

President: Then may I continue with our agenda?

Secretary: If you’d please...

I am a card carrying member of the People Pleezers Society. I should be, because I started it about 15 minutes ago. The society was initiated after a long tortuous day in which I suffered because I told someone that something hurt my feelings and I finally took control of a festering issue that I couldn’t get fixed minus my interference. I didn’t like it, but I spoke up and said that my feelings had been hurt and I took the risk that someone was going to be mad because I had finally taken the reigns and fixed a problem.

It is my job to fix things like that. It’s my life and so I’m supposed to speak up when I’m feeling bad about something. But when you are a card carrying member of the People Pleezers Society, you know that after you do what you must, you carry around in your gut (sometimes for days) a dreadful Chicken-Little-Sky-Is-Falling feeling. You have said and done things that likely have caused people to not be pleased. In fact, they are likely mad, upset, complaining to their husband, kicking their chairs, throwing things out of windows, eating excessive chocolate, or sitting in their closets just because you spoke up.

Oh – but it gets worse. Because you actually went ahead and did something that had a very high likelihood of causing someone you value highly to be upset, you believe your behavior may cause mountains to tear apart in a major earthquake, opening a raging river that roars down your street to carry your little yellow house away to the ocean.

There are two sides of being a People Pleezer:

  1. One side of you is inclined to do and say things that you don’t want to do or say because you can’t bear to see anyone suffer.

  2. One side of you agonizes if you have to do something likely to cause someone to feel upset. You’d rather stick your hand through plate glass than have another person angry or hurt by you.

Why? Because you are a card-carrying member of the People Pleezers Society.

Meeting adjourned.

- Ro

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Decorating with Word Art

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Windows Vista.

Digital scrapbooking word art certainly isn't just for decorating your layouts. Here's an easy and decorative way to display some of your favorite Scrap Girls word art and papers around your home in an altered frame.

What you will need: A frame, digital scrapbooking papers and word art, Mod Podge, a craft knife, ruler and coordinating acrylic paint, if desired.

Decide what size frame you will be working with and begin by making a blank canvas in the same size. Choose your word art and a background paper that matches. If you're working with a smaller frame size (4x6 or 5x7) it’s best to resize your background papers to 7x7 or smaller before moving them onto your canvas. This way you'll get more detail of the paper when you print.

Screenshot: Add paper and word art

Move your paper and word art onto your blank canvas. Center your word art on your canvas and add a drop shadow, if preferred. Note: Keep in mind that most frames crop somewhere between a 1/8th and a 1/4th of an inch off the edges when your finished product is placed into a frame. Print your file.

Screenshot: Attach paper to frame

Next, decide what patterned paper you wish to cover your frame with. Measure the face of your frame and print your paper size accordingly. Apply a small amount of Mod Podge on the face of your frame. Lay your patterned paper face down on the table and apply firm pressure to the frame.

Screenshot: Trim excess paper from frame

After the glue has dried, use a craft knife to cut the excess paper from around the edges and the inside portion of the frame. You may paint the edges around the frame with acrylic paint if you choose.

Coat the patterned paper with a small amount of Mod Podge. This will help adhere and seal the paper to the frame. After it’s dry, insert your word art and display it!

- MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Opportunities for You!

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
