Life Muses by Ro: Gotta Love Digital

Note from Ro: I found this post on the Scrap Girls blog by Melissa Renfro. I got kind of envious while reading it because when I was raising my children, digital photography didn’t exist. We went through a number of years in which we couldn’t afford film and film development, our camera was broken, I forgot to develop the film and it went bad, or I missed the shot because I was too much of a cheapskate to take more than one or two pictures about a single topic. In other words, I missed valuable opportunities and we have painful holes in my children’s life histories. Nothing can bring those moments back and my memory has faded.

It was obvious when I received a digital camera for Christmas because the number of photos of my children shot through the roof. I took photos because I could. And then, of course, I wanted to scrap them.

Digital scrapbooking is the happy solution for my love of documentation (thus protecting our family from my tendency to forget important details) because it allows me to create as many layouts as I wish. I can reuse the papers and embellishments as often as I would like – and I do. I can print out as many copies of a layout as I want – and I do. I can purchase inexpensive albums and photo paper on sale – which I do. And now, the only thing that stands between me and the number of layouts I create now is how much time I have to scrapbook. I love it and I’m filling up albums with layouts with great photos – photos that look like a professional took them. Why? Because my digital camera lets me practice. Isn’t it cool?

Okay... now on to Melissa’s post...

divider

Sometimes, I think about how much money I would spend if I were still using traditional photography. You remember... film, developing, and enlargements. This is one of the reasons I love digital photography so much.

I am addicted to using the burst mode on my camera. The burst mode will take several pictures all in a row without pausing to record the images until afterward. This gives you the ability to take pictures one after another with no down time. With small children to photograph, it is hard to catch those fleeting expressions that capture their personality. For my digital scrapbook layouts, I am sometimes looking for a specific picture. I just snap away until I get something I really like.

The only thing is, I am kind of a pack-rat. See, I never delete anything from my photo files. I end up with pages of pictures in my Windows Photo Gallery that are almost identical. Perhaps, someday, I will pare things down a little, but, for now, I still like going through all of those “not so perfect” pictures and seeing all of the expressions and interaction that go on behind the scenes of the perfect digital photo.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Tools - Styles

Note: Tutorial written using Adobe Photoshop CS2.

Have you ever seen a layout in the gallery and wondered how they achieved a certain look or texture? Most likely the secret ingredient, the very thing that puzzled you, is only a click away.

When you load a style, it is like taking a trip to the craft store without the cost of gas, or having to have a storage closet for all the supplies. Oh, and did I mention... no glue or mess to clean up after your project? With styles, you can get the look of glitter, sanded edges, metal, glass, texture, and many more cool effects.

Below, you will see the basics of a layout without styles, then you will see, following it, the difference that styles can make in your digital scrapbooking layouts. If you have never loaded a style, don’t worry. They come with very complete instructions.

Screenshot: Layout without styles

Here is the basic structure of my layout. I wanted to give the background a little more texture. So in the next version, I added paper texture with ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Paper Textures 4902.

Even embellishments and type can be changed with styles. To the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Burned Frame, I added ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Colored Vellum 5401, and the finishing touch was turning my type to glass with ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Glass Clear Super Biggie 4101. By adding realistic embellishments to the plastic pocket and a turquoise and wire border down the side, my layout now looks like an altered page without all the bulk.

Now that you have seen the before and after of styles in your layouts, you too can add a little STYLE to your digital scrapbook projects. Who knew that style was only a click away?

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN&qrduo; on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
