“Summer” layout by Armi Custodio
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Don’t be afraid to experiment with colors! In my case, instead of the traditional summer colors of blues and yellows, I chose a bright red paper from Ariadna Wiczling’s Herbal Collection as my background paper. This bold background set against summer embellishments gives the layout a modern feel without taking away from its summer theme.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Name of challenge: Embellishment Templates

“A Passion for Apples” layout by Caroline Kaiser
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the big apple on the paper bag album, I used Sarah Batdorf’s ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Fruit 6501 and clipped Brandy Murry’s paper from the Dreams May Come Collection to it. I merged both layers and erased the edges of the apple with Brandie Valenzuela’s Brush Set: Well Worn. Now it looks like it was painted on the paper bag album.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Children

“Happy” layout by Amy Lemaniak
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I took Sarah Batdorf’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Stitched Stems and opened up the PSD version of it. I used the Eyedropper Tool to select some colors from my background paper and applied a different color to each of the flower petal layers. I also chose a green color and used the Paint Bucket Tool to color the stitched stem and leaves of the flower. To complete the look, I applied Cheryl Barber’s ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Stitching and Holes 4101 Mini to the stem and leaf layers.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

“Cheeky Monkeys” layout by Jo Corne
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To give my photo the ‘bleached out’ look, I first ran Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001 Black and White with Color through it and then changed its Blend Mode to “Vivid Light.” I then put the photo layer over Sarah Batdorf’s ScrapSimple Paper Template: Family Branch “Cardstock”, which had its Blend Mode changed to “Screen” at 85%. This was then layered over Sarah Batdorf’s Sandy Shores Collection Mini Boardwalk Paper.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Children
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: My two cheeky monkeys, this is what I call them. My beautiful first-born daughter and my handsome second-born son. From the moment they wake up to the minute they go to bed I find myself looking at them in total awe that they are MY children. That I gave birth to these two very magnificent human beings totally blows my mind! I hope and pray that they continue to grow up to be the wonderful people I see in their eyes, good people, kind people, caring people, loving people.

“Twins' 3rd Birthday” layout by Launa Valente
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I love to do brag books, but I also make a "year book" for my family. So by using Sarah's ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Page Protectors, I can make my brag book, and then use the same layouts for my 12X12 year book! It's the best of both worlds!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Children

“Blue Belt” layout by Janine Buckles
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I used Brandy Murry’s Scrap Simple Sketch It action on the image and placed it on the layer above my bottom paper. I duplicated the bottom paper layer (Right-Click> Duplicate Layer). Then I selected it by clicking on the thumbnail image in the Layers Palette and moved it to the top (Arrange> Bring to front). With it still selected, I changed the Blend Mode to “Linear Burn.” Now my “sketched” image shows through the top layer. In order to get the rough texture, I used one of PSE’s wet media brushes, set to Eraser, and erased portions of the bottom paper layer.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0
Name of challenge: Accomplishments

“Hands-On Dad” layout by Armi Custodio
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create the stitched background behind the photos, I used only two kinds of swirls from Erica Hite’s In Stitches Embellishment Template. I duplicated the swirls, filled them with color, then resized and rotated them. Try different sizes and use both vertical and horizontal rotations to make it look that you have a variety of swirls. I also used this same method on the mica tiles. Those tiles are just rotated and resized versions of a single mica tile from Syndee Nuckles’ By the Sea Collection Mini.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0
Name of challenge: Fathers
Other Ingredients:
- Font - Arial
- Font - Times New Roman
Journaling: Sometimes, life with twins can get a little crazy. I am so thankful that you are a very hands-on father. Even after a full, tiring day at work, you do all you can to help me with the kids. In the beginning, you were hesitant to do so. Not because you didn’t want to, but because you were afraid of dropping them and because you didn’t know a thing about taking care of children. But with each passing day, you became more confident of your ability to hold, comfort, play, diaper and feed our children. I love you.

A Designers Life: Sheri Johnson |
Realizing a Childhood Dream
I have always dreamed of living on a tropical island. As a child, I planned a fictitious “beach party.” The party was to be grand, with hundreds of dollars of trinkets from a mail-order catalogue, decorations that spared no expense, and perhaps a lake (having a beach party in a landlocked state poses some challenges). The party was simply a dream that never happened.
But, the obsession continued. I would crank up the heat in the middle of winter, lie on a towel and play a cassette tape of ocean sounds in my bathing suit with a lamp pointed at my face. I started collecting tiki paraphernalia. I acquired a coconut bra and grass skirt and danced around my room to Dick Dale. Eventually, I took my first trip to the Caribbean ocean in Cancun, Mexico. I couldn’t breathe when I saw the ocean! I had seen plenty of cold Pacific Northwest beaches, but the clear, blue water and white sand was the most breathtaking thing I had ever seen. I immediately began planning how I could get there for longer than a week-long vacation.
Never underestimate the power of affirmations. I once heard that if you repeat something over and over, enough that you believe it yourself, it will happen. My affirmation was “I live on a tropical island.” Every morning in the shower I repeated it over and over until it became a constant sound and not words. Whenever I was alone, I would repeat my affirmation. I scoured the Internet for the “how,” all the while believing that it would come my way.
Just over a year later, I stepped off the plane to start my Caribbean life. All I could do was shake my head in disbelief. It was the day I was to start living my ultimate dream!
The funny thing about dreams is, once you achieve them, they are never as green as the grass looked from your imagination. What exactly happens when you want something so bad and then you get it? The problem is, once you are doing something day after day, the shiny coating wears off a little and it gets bumped from “what if?” to “this is what it is.” I knew it was going to happen and I even feared that realization a little because I liked having a fancy dream.
Not everything is silver and gold about my life in the Caribbean. From mosquitoes to transportation issues to overpriced groceries, there are plenty of obstacles. My dream was achieved and reality filled in where the vision ended. Aside from the shadows and cobwebs of reality, I didn’t know the things that I would enjoy the most would be the moments in between.
Riding the bus and slowly getting to know the bus drivers. Finding a good price on eggs or a product that I miss from back home. Taking in the array and striking beauty of the plants and splashes of color from the flowers and greenery that blanket everything. Endless opportunities to take pictures of ridiculously beautiful scenery and textures. Scouting out long, winding, scenic paths that eventually lead me to the beach. Eating sweet, sun-ripened fruits plucked right off the tree. Strolling the beaches for the endless array of sea shells. Making room in my life for church and really enjoying it. Enriching my life with the people who have accepted me for who I am and were genuinely friendly from the moment I met them.
Living the tropical dream has taken on a whole new meaning, different than I expected, but even more wonderful than I ever could have imagined.
- Sheri

Favorite product I've designed:
Cabana Collection Biggie

This is the embodiment of the tropical paradise I know. People like to wear, carry and paint in bright colors. You see a lot of batik and flower prints, greenery everywhere and all varieties of flowers growing freely, covering everything. Sweet tropical fruit trees grow all over the island and there are mangos, papayas, “golden apples,” coconuts (jellies) and gooseberries for everyone. I tried to flavor Cabana with the feeling of having sunshine year round. It is one part freshly squeezed fruit juice, two parts vivacious flowers, three parts beach and sea and six parts carefree and happy!

Scrap Girls Club Comments |
These comments were made by our great Scrap Girls customers and friends about Brandy Hackman's June Club, Abstract Expressionism, which is only available through today, and Amanda Sok and Ursula Schneider's June ScrapSimple Club, also available commercially, which is available through the 14th of July.
The enthusiasm surrounding the release of a new kit is contagious, and we wanted all of our newsletter readers to share in the excitement! Come see what it's about on our message board as we get ready to release our new July Club tomorrow!
Scrap Girls Club
Okay, I just finished downloading Brandy's club products for June and I have to say that it is an absolutely amazing collection! Brandy, thank you so much. You did an excellent job! I have plans to use it today. It's inspiring to say the least. I just wanted to stop by and say THANK YOU!

I agree! Simply wonderful!

Ditto, ditto, ditto... beautiful and thanks so much.

I can't wait for my link to arrive... opening such wonderful goodies is so much fun! (Rubbing hands together with glee and anticipation.)

I'm about to commence downloading... it looks like it’s going to be another wonderful club kit, as usual!

I love it, too. It is so unique and not like anything I have. Love it. I am sure I will use it often. It is so my style!

I thought it was nice when I saw the thumbnail over the weekend, but the download... OH MY! FANTASTIC! It's so gorgeous. Thanks again, Brandy! I think your word art style is my very favorite. It is so versatile. I love it. Thanks.

Oh yes, I want this beautiful kit. I haven't wished for a birthday in a long time! Hopefully, I will soon be a club member and make fancy layouts like all of you!

I'm still waiting for my download link, too, and it's almost noon! OK, it's only 10:44, but it feels like almost noon because I've been drooling over this kit since yesterday! It looks gorgeous! I can hardly wait to get my link and start downloading!

I hope you all enjoy working with the collection. It was a fun one to create! I had all of my paints out on the kitchen table for days and had a great time painting again... and so did my boys. Can't wait to see all of your layouts!

ScrapSimple Club
I remembered that today is the 15th and OOOHHHHH what a great day to be a member of the ScrapSimple Club! Amanda and Ursula, you two did a fantastic job! I love it! I think you have mind reading skills in addition to your superior designing prowess!

You made me go look. I knew we wouldn't get it until tomorrow, but I forgot that we could see it today.

It looks really nice... perfect for heritage or feminine layouts. Well, that's how I picture me using it. I love that there are two paper template sets. I've really enjoyed using paper templates lately. Those Victorian Frames are awesome.

I just got a glimpse of it and you are right! It is awesome! You girls are so talented! Thank you for sharing your talent with us, you've done a beautiful job! Keep up the great work you do. I can't wait to get a hold of mine! Thanks again.

I can't wait to get my hands on it! Looks amazing!

These look so pretty. I can't wait to get a closer look at them! They never stop coming up with wonderful ideas, do they?

You ladies are awesome. I just got everything downloaded, unzipped and looked at. I love it. The little previews do not do it justice. I have a LOT of stuff this will go with.

Thanks for all you do! |

This in-depth class is a wonderful opportunity to learn the basics of typography. This class comes with the Ten Beginner Tips on Type eBook. If you have already bought this eBook, email [email protected] to receive a store credit to use towards the purchase of this class. Learn simple rules and guidelines to use multiple fonts together more effectively. Discuss different ways to make journaling and title a cohesive part of every layout. Study real examples, and see how applying the rules can improve your layouts.
Important: This Intermediate Level class is for all digital scrapbooking programs. Students are required to understand the basic skills taught in the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program prior to starting the course. This information will not be reviewed as part of the course!
Enrolling in this course without understanding these basic skills may cause you to feel lost and frustrated when you attend the classes. We want you to have a great experience. So please, if you are uncertain that you have enough skills to take this course, use the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program to build an adequate foundation prior to the classes starting. Thanks! |

Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
