Customer Muse: When You Are Not Enough |
It's a hard pill to swallow when you realize that you are not enough or not what is best for your child, typically when your child hits the teen years. But, it's an almost impossible pill to swallow when your child is only nine.
My son has had a rocky road to travel since the second he came wailing into this world. His medical records can easily rival a Victor Hugo novel in size. Every day, something seemed to happen and on days that things were calm we spent them worried and waiting for the “next shoe to drop.”
In the first four years of my son’s life, he went through more medically than most of us will in our entire lifetime: stroke, seizures, more medications than I care to remember, a specialized diet where food was measured in grams, and a left hemispherectomy (left hemisphere of brain removed). But, in between all of that, my son’s resilient spirit shone through and he learned to sit up, crawl, and say mamma, da, me and walk. He had to re-learn to do those things many times as he would lose the ability with each new crisis.
After his hemispherectomy, when he was four years old, we were so optimistic and hopeful that he would have the same success as others have had after this surgery. It was successful! He was seizure free for the first time in his life. We saw tremendous cognitive gains and stayed hopeful.
After about six months, we noticed that the gains he was making started slowing down and then finally stopped. In its place, a darker side of my son started to appear. It started out as throwing temper tantrums and banging his head and then it progressed to banging his head on windows until the glass would break. He started throwing things and hurting his brothers. We tried desperately to find help, but none was available.
We packed up and moved to a new state where my family was able to help us. They had special schools for children with mental retardation, those that did not fit into public school settings.
My husband and I became addicts. If we try this therapy, if we take him to this doctor, if we just increase this medication, if we just add this new medication... For three years, we lived a life of trying “just one more.”
When you love your child, it is with the deepest depth of your soul and you would give anything and everything to make their life better, make them healthier, to let them be happier. You give so much for the child who needs the most that you lose sight of your other children and, unknowingly, you start to put off the things they need. Eventually, you become so wrapped up in this life style that it becomes “normal” when it is the furthest thing from normal.
It becomes normal to not sleep through the night... EVER. It becomes normal to be in a constant battle of wills with your child, to duck and cover when stuff starts getting thrown at you, to be woken up at 2 a.m. by the fire alarm because your child is up trying to toast waffles - over and over again until they catch fire. It becomes normal to be afraid to go to the bathroom because while you are in there you can't be watching him and he might get into the cabinet and smash drinking glasses, climb on the table and take light bulbs out of the light fixture and smash them, or decide to walk out the front door and into the road. You know that these things can happen from experience! It becomes normal to be kicked, hit, smacked and to find my other two sons cowering between the sofa and wall, hiding from him until I can get there and restrain their brother from hurting them. It becomes normal to be under siege 24 hours a day.
You love this child of yours and will do anything for him until finally, one day, you wake up and you just can't. You just can't make yourself. You don't have the energy to do it and, sadly, you just don't have the heart to do it anymore. You look around and see just how abnormal your life has become and how everyone in your family is paying the price for it. It feels like it was okay yesterday and then, today, it's just not okay. How did things deteriorate to this point? My family sat back and watched helplessly. They watched and waited until I was ready to see what was going on. That it had been a train wreck in slow motion for years, but I was not ready to see that yet. Once I realized this, that they were right, the amount of guilt I placed on myself made me stagger under its weight.
When it was decided that my son was no longer safe in our house, safe to himself, his brothers and to my husband and me, we had to make the heart-wrenching decision to place him in a residential care facility. There he receives supervision every second of every day. He is taken very good care of and the staff and nurses there love him and try to spoil him. He has a very strict routine, which he thrives on and he is getting the care he needs. My other two children are becoming less fearful and anxious. They are also thriving now that they live in a peaceful, predictable home. I am thankful and happy for that, but I am also green with envy that the staff are the ones that tuck him in at night and get the good morning hugs. They get to be the ones that greet him when he gets off the bus. They let me be involved as much as possible with the decision-making and I can visit him at anytime. But, that's just it. I feel I have been reduced to a visitor in my son’s life. He is 1½ hours away from home, so I can only get there weekly and sometimes only every other week.
He has been there now for a year and a half and not a day goes by that I don't pray, wishing things could be different. Anytime I tell someone that he lives in residential care, I have an overwhelming feeling that I have to justify our decision to put him there. Although no one has questioned us as to why we did it, many have questioned why it took so long.
The feelings of failure, guilt and sadness are a constant companion in my life. I have talked to family therapists until I'm blue in the face and out of breath and, finally, my head knows that we did what had to be done, but my heart still just won't accept that. It is a bitter realization that I am not what he needs or the best thing for him anymore.

I just switched over to digital scrapping this year, so there is always a little learning curve. But I have always gotten a response when I have asked and I think your University tab on your website is very helpful.
I am just getting into digital scrapbooking (or any other kind of scrapbooking) and am really starting to enjoy it. But what I enjoy the most is Scrap Girls' honesty about the problems your server has been having. Since you are keeping everyone updated, we feel like a part of the team. At least I do. I'm more understanding when things go wrong and I know what it is. So a heartfelt thank you. I will continue to buy from your site because I trust you guys (gals)!
As for your questions, I've never had anything but a wonderful experience with Scrap Girls. Aside from the ScrapSimple Club, which I belonged to for about a year, I've only ever placed one order with Scrap Girls, but that is simply due to my lack of discretionary income on disability pension. Your products are lovely.
I've spoken with/emailed Angie a number of times for customer service questions/issues and she's always been immensely helpful! She responds quickly and always has the info I need. Scrap Girls was the first scrap boutique I found on the first day of my digital scrapping journey and I called her and asked a number of newbie questions. She spent over 1/2 hour on the phone with me, answering questions about digital design and offering her suggestions for all sorts of things. That friendly response to my first question really told me that I'd found a wonderful hobby in scrapping and a great community of helpful caring people.
Thank you so much! I have to say that Scrap Girls is one of my absolute favorites for designer resources! (As I'm sure you can see by my invoices!) I have always been thrilled with the quality of everything and the one time I had a small problem it was handled super fast! Kudos to all of you who work so hard there!
I want to tell you how excited I am with your CD and your products. Your service was excellent. I received my CD on Christmas Eve and was able to start using it Christmas night. After looking at just five clips, I have almost completed a layout! I had been attempting to teach myself Adobe Photoshop with the tutorials and I was so frustrated at how complicated it seemed. I have new hope that I will be able to master the software and go on to enjoy a whole new level of scrapbooking! Thank you for such a helpful product.
