Life Muses by Ro: Look How Far We’ve Come

The Internet fascinates me for two reasons:

  1. As an info-geek who is on a never-ending search for knowledge, the amount of information available on the Internet reminds me of lying on my grandmother’s lawn on a warm summer night, looking up at starry skies. Just as it is impossible to understand how many stars there are in the sky, it is unfathomable how many websites and blogs exist in the endless web of links leading to links leading to even more links. When we find something we like, we quickly learn to bookmark it or subscribe to a newsletter or RSS feed from it, otherwise, we may never find our way back to the wonderful resource again.

Because the amount of information available on the Internet is so vast, I have rapidly learned that if someone has taken the time to gather and assimilate the information I am looking for, I will subscribe to their list and/or purchase the materials they have written. As a result, I now have shelves full of materials I acquired in this manner and I have found it invaluable to me as I built our business. I am grateful I bought them when I had the chance because they have helped me tremendously.

As I’ve studied, I’ve discovered a few voices I like to read or listen to because they are “hunters, gatherers and dispensers” of materials and information. Their efforts save me tons of time and I love them for their efforts.

  1. When I was growing up, I was the only person in three counties that played the violin. I played lots of solos, as you can imagine. But, every summer, I went to a two week music clinic at a local university in which music students like myself gathered from around the United States. Meeting people who had the same level of passion about music was life changing. It gave me confidence that I wasn’t a cat in the middle of a herd of geese. There were more cats in the world! I knew they existed because I had met, talked and even shared meals with some real live cool musical cats, many who played the fiddle, too.

The Internet reminds me of an international music clinic. In our “real” lives we exist surrounded by people who often don’t understand our hobby. Sometimes, they can’t open their ears enough to hear that the hobby is more than that to us. It is a passion.

For instance, designing a digital scrapbooking layout is a process that leaves the creator “soul-full.” Using the creative voice to make something that communicates how you feel about someone or something feels important. It feels like you are building a highway that allows one generation to travel into another generation’s minds. If our photographs are passed down by themselves, it is very likely that by the time the grandchild is the caretaker of them, she won’t know who the individuals in the photos are and what importance they were to her family. She won’t know the story behind the photos.

I understand this danger because I have a very large album containing my grandmother and grandfather’s photos. Many of these photos were taken while they were teenagers or young adults. They were with other friends... other boyfriends... other girlfriends.... in the photos. It looks like everyone was having fun, but exactly what they were doing, I can only try to guess. And so, I have these lovely photos from around the turn of the century and I know little about anyone in that entire book.

That tragedy would not occur if a dedicated scrapbooker was the family record keeper. It might take her most of her life to get it all documented, but she will do it – and enjoy the process as well. She can order enough prints of her layouts and albums so that family members can have their own copies, too.

I know I’m going to be doing a lot more scrapping soon. My youngest daughter is eighteen and it has been discussed multiple times that Mom is not to continue bossing an adult young woman around. Since I know I need to direct my Mom-daughter obsession somewhere, I believe I’ll work a little harder on building a scrapbook of her life.

Twenty years ago, I didn’t know much about computers. They were massively expensive and the ones that were available for home use weren’t good for much but rudimentary word processing and game playing. No one I knew spoke about the Internet. It was difficult to find information (our local library was very limited) and if you had an unusual hobby, it was even harder to locate people you could share them with.

That was just 20 years ago. Look how far we’ve come.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Changing the Look of a Paper With ScrapSimple Paper Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS with Windows XP.

Sometimes, you have just the perfect digital scrapbooking paper for a layout, and other times, nothing quite fits. Maybe the color is wrong or you want a certain pattern or texture but don’t want to go through all of the work of making a brand new background paper from scratch. It’s fun and easy to play around with existing products and see what you can come up with for your special digital scrapbooking layouts using ScrapSimple Paper Templates.

Screenshot: Layer template over paper

Open up a paper from the Cabana Collection Biggie and copy and paste a ScrapSimple Paper Template: Art of Love (Dotty) over it.

Screenshot: Erase template over paper design

You can modify the ScrapSimple Paper Template layer if you wish. Here, you can erase parts of it where it overlaps the pineapple design to make it look more deliberate and interesting.

Next, you can add a coordinating color to the template as an easy way to tie in a color from your photograph, or add a style to it such as glitter or metal for an interesting effect. For this custom paper, I want something subtle, so we are going to emboss the dots.

Screenshot: Choose a color

Double-click on your ScrapSimple Paper Template layer and click on the “Bevel and Emboss” tab. Adjust the depth and intensity until it is to your liking. Then, click on the “Color Overlay” tab and use the picker to find a shade close to your paper. If there are multiple colors on your background that you need to emboss, make a copy of your background layer and place it directly over the top of your Paper Template and go to Layer> Create Clipping Mask (Ctrl+G). Your paper, including all patterns, will appear embossed.

Screenshot: Run photo action to create sepia look

The custom paper could be finished at this point, but I decide to make it neutral colors with one last step. Merge all of the layers together and run ScrapSimple Tools – Actions: Photo Basics (Classic Sepia) to make the yellow paper look like aged brown paper.

Now, you are ready to create your layout with your new custom paper!

Important: This Intermediate Level class is for all digital scrapbooking programs. Students are required to understand the basic skills taught in the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed and MORE Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program prior to starting the course. This information will not be reviewed as part of the course!

Enrolling in this course without understanding these basic skills may cause you to feel lost and frustrated when you attend the classes. We want you to have a great experience. So please, if you are uncertain that you have enough skills to take this course, use the Scrapbook Secrets Revealed program to build an adequate foundation prior to the classes starting. Thanks!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
