Life Muses by Ro: You Are Noticed

Michael Reagan’s voice filled my car as I rounded the corner of the Point of the Mountain. The peaks of the Wasatch Mountains towered over the east side of the basin. In the distance, I could see the Ochre Mountains outlining the bowl of the Salt Lake Valley. Just twenty more minutes and I would pull into my driveway.

Suddenly, I felt overwhelmed by the realization that I was simply a small speck of dust, rolling upwards and, as it did, I visualized my car getting smaller and smaller until it was so tiny that it was not visible.

Then my mind looked over the world and saw all of the people that filled the planet. “There are so many of them,” I gasped. “I know they are my brothers and sisters. I know that I’m a child of God. But how can He keep track of so many of us?”

The question asked, my mind reeled backwards throughout the ages and I saw generations upon generations of souls coming to the earth, each bearing children, teaching them, and then moving on when their turn was over. Each generation rolled in and out in waves, growing, changing, opinions wavering, arguing about what is politically correct or not correct, what is popular, and what should be done. I saw civilizations rise and fall even though they believed that they were unconquerable, but in the end, the cause of their destruction came from within.

I was breathless as it passed through my mind so quickly. I prayed, “How is it, under the circumstances, that you take any notice of me? I’m nothing special at all. I’d really like to know the answer to this question, please. How is it that you notice me?”

The answer came in a whisper, “Because I have the ability to number and love all of my children. And you, dear one, are my child, too. I notice you because I love you.”

It was such a simple answer, but it was exactly what I needed to hear. I know it is true. You see, if my earthly parents are able to love me and never able to forget me, despite their imperfect human state, then how much more perfectly can my Heavenly Father love and remember me?

Would it ever be possible for me to forget one of my children no matter what choices they may make upon this earth, even if I completely disagree with them? No, I could never forget my children. I love them. They are mine. And even if they choose to walk a path I would not choose, my love for each one will not be stilled.

I know them. They are part of me. They are my children. I cannot forget them no matter what may come or what has passed.

It has been many years since I drove over the Point of the Mountain that day and received, in a flash of my mind, an overview of the history of mankind. But, occasionally, when I feel somewhat unsure that I am able to cope with being one tiny voice on such a big planet full of people, the memory returns and I think to myself, “I have nothing to fear because I am His child. He is aware of me, helping me, and that is enough. That is more than enough.”

I feel to say to each of you that you are not alone, either. Even if you don’t realize it, you are being watched and loved. Even though your life sometimes feels hard – incredibly difficult – you are still watched over, cared for and yes, loved... loved with a love so great that is creates an impossibility of forgetting.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Creating an Art Supply Caddy With a Recycled Carton

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.

Here’s an easy way to provide your kids with a fun craft, teach them the value of recycling, and make something useful - all at the same time. It’s perfect for a summertime or rainy day activity and your kids will be really proud of the end result.

Screenshot: empty carton

Start by taking an empty six-pack carton. This is what mine looked like, but anything with separate sections and a handle would work.

Screenshot: printed supplies

Using sticker paper, print out at least four sheets of 8.5x11 paper. Since I wanted to reinforce the concept of recycling with my kids, I chose some bright papers and embellishments from the Planet Earth Collection and a fun alpha from the Rock and Roll Collection, but you could use absolutely any digital scrapbooking collection.

Print out any embellishments that you may want to use to decorate your caddy with once it’s finished. You can print out the sheets of embellishments that are included with the digital scrapbooking collection or you can create your own custom sets of embellishments by dragging the ones you want to use onto a new 8.5x11 document and then printing it. We’re teaching the concept of recycling here, so try not to waste paper!

Screenshot: reinforced bottom

Because you’ll be using this caddy to hold art supplies, reinforce the bottom by gluing a piece of cardboard to it like this.

Screenshot: add papers to sides

Next, cut your papers to approximately the size of the size you want to cover and glue them on. Don’t worry if your edges are hanging off, we’re going to trim them in the next step.

Screenshot: trim edges

Turn the carton so that the side you’re working with is face down. Now, you can see exactly where you need to trim. Using a craft knife, carefully trim around the edges. Be sure to leave enough paper to turn down over the edge when you’re finished. (I actually trimmed these a little too close!)

Screenshot: decorating

Do this for all sides, plus the handle. When I was finished covering the four sides of our caddy, I had enough paper left over to cover some of the inside walls of the carton, too. It’s certainly not necessary, but it gives the caddy a finished look. Before you know it, your carton will be ready for decorating.

Screenshot: finished caddy

As you can see in the photo above, I also decided to add some ribbon to the edges of our carton just to add some strength to the box as well as a little more color. Cut out the printed embellishments and let your kids have fun decorating their new art supply caddy!

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.

  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN&qrduo; on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
