Life Muses by Ro: Just Follow Me |
Blindfold intact, Nancy walked along the curb. She had traveled nearly four blocks without stepping off of the edge and now felt strong and secure in her ability to navigate in the darkness without help. “It is uncanny,” she smiled, “I seem to have the ability to balance on this thin edge of cement when others can not. I must be talented.”
As soon as the proud thought passed through her mind, a blast of cold wind hit her skirt, causing it to fly up around her waist. Hastily, she grabbed it and held it around her so that it covered her limbs. But as she did, she lost her balance, stepped off of the curb into a ditch of running water, slipped on a piece of moss, and quickly found herself attempting to extricate dirty liquid from the back of her sinuses.
Disgusted, Nancy pulled the off the blindfold from her eyes and shouted up into the heavens, “I thought you were helping me.”
“I did help you, Nancy,” a voice called back. “I gave you eyes to see. I gave you ears to hear. I gave you a heart to feel. It was you that placed the blindfold on your eyes.”
“I was alright on my own until you sent the wind,” Nancy pouted.
“You chose to walk along the edge of a ditch. You chose to think about your successes in a prideful way. It wasn’t necessary to do these things.”
Nancy nodded when she received the counsel, realizing she was at fault. Everything had been going well until she cut herself off from Heaven. Everything had gone well until she became...
“...prideful,” Nancy sighed. “I became too proud of myself and boasted that I was doing it all by myself. I guess I needed a little reminder of where my blessings come from.”
Nancy climbed out of the ditch, pulled wet weeds from her long wet hair, smoothed her skirt down around her legs, blew her nose, and walked up to the safety of the sidewalk.
“Would you mind showing me the way?” Nancy asked. “I believe I need your help very much.”
The sun shined brightly and warmed Nancy’s face. She felt a gentle breeze brush across her cheek and as it did, she thought she heard someone reply, “I’m delighted to show you the way, child. Just follow me.”

Best of the Message Board |
Question: How do you keep track of brushes, styles and tools? Talk about use it or lose it. I realized this morning that I had, in fact, already bought a super cool dynamic brush! Where had it been hiding? Oh, just in the folder it is suppose to be in! Then I realize that I have a few other neat things that I haven't used in a while because I forgot about them - then forgot how to use them. I'm feeling age creeping up on me! Maybe I can still blame it on the toddler - except I can't even do that because he just turned four! So what's your trick to keep it all straight?
Answer 1: I use the program ACDSee to organize all of my scrap stuff. For things like brushes, I categorize them according to what they do and what they create. For example, a dynamic stitching brush would be categorized under both Brushes> Stitching and Embellishments> Stitching. That way, if I need stitching and I search under embellishments it will show up! I do this with actions, styles, etc., even though ACDSee does not let me preview those, as of yet. I can refer to the preview image for the product (which doesn't automatically come with Scrap Girls products). I always save a copy of the preview to the folder of the product I have bought.
Answer 2: I keep an Excel spreadsheet with a page for each department of the boutique. Embellishments, Collections, Brushes, etc. Each time I make a purchase, I add it to the spreadsheet. I also keep a copy of purchased products on my Kaboodle wish list. That way, I take it off of the wish list and move it to a purchased list right away. I usually do all of this while my stuff's downloading, so that I don't forget.
Response Answer: Good ideas... I think I'll make a list of the things that don't show up in my PSE Organizer like my styles, tools and some brushes - maybe in my Evernote program. I'll have to figure this out a bit more. Thanks for the ideas!
Answer 3: Even if you have it organized, that doesn't mean you remember that you have it if you aren't particularly looking for it. I have my stuff pretty organized, but every so often I just go through each folder and see what's in it. It usually inspires me to make something with it if I haven't seen it in a long time. It’s like finding something brand new!
Answer 4: With such a good sale, what I do is after I have decided what I want to buy, I do a "search." I use Windows. I tell it to look only where I have my digi folders, which are pretty much as Ro's Secrets tell you about and that way I don't duplicate what I already have and have forgotten that I got already. I think taking this little step saves me from duplicating and having to beg for a refund or credit, which is nobody's fault except my own. Also, my folders have tools, styles, shapes... I add to them as I need to.

Question: I use PSPX for most of my scrapping pages. I just purchased Paint Peeled Templates from the boutique, but the instructions were not for PSP users. They are in PNG format and I can't for the life of me figure out how to use them. If any of you ladies could help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Answer 1: I would try a variety of things. First, try opening your PNG file as a second file and create a Masking Layer with it (Layers> New Mask Layer> From Image). Play around with the different options until you get a nice result, or paste it as a layer into your file and mess around with the Blend Modes. If you're using the kit I saw in the boutique, it looks way cool!
Answer 2: Here is how I use it. Open the template you want to use, duplicate and close the original. Add a new layer on top and fill with either your choice of color or a paper. Activate the template layer and use the Magic Wand set to opacity with contiguous Unchecked. Click in one of the transparent areas. Click the color layer and Delete, select none. Use layer modes and opacity settings until you are happy with the result. You can also use Adjust> Hue/Sat/Color to enhance or change the color.
Answer 3: I pretty much use Dee's method. Sometimes, using the mask layer feature, the size gets warped.

Question: When using the Rule of Threes, should the embellishments that I am using three of be the same size or is it more pleasing to have them of varied sizes?
Answer 1: I like to have mine be different sizes, but that's just me. I don't know any hard and fast rules on it.
Answer 2: Usually, you want to vary the size of your embellishments, just to keep things interesting. But, it depends on the layout and the embellishment. I'm not much help, am I?
Response: This helps! I tried varying the sizes and it does look a bit more interesting, actually! Thanks Scrap Girls!
Answer 3: I think you will usually want to vary the sizes. Try having two of the same size and one a different size. That's called the Rule of, um, Something-I-Can't-Remember-Right-Now.
Answer 4: If you want to learn even more about design, check out V and Mandy's wonderful eBook “Ten Basic Design Principles.”
Answer 5: Yes, I have the book and it is helpful! I also noticed a new class listing for Design Principles. Sounds interesting and Anna is teaching it, I believe. |
