Life Muses by Ro: Corner the Notebook Market

“Corner the notebook market,” the wise man said, “and you will never lack for ideas.”

“Why is this so, oh man of deep thoughts?” the pupil humbly said. “Is it not true that notebooks, by themselves, are known for their blank attribute?”

“Ahh...” the master nodded, considering the questions posed. “Yes, notebooks are acquired while still in their innocent state of emptiness. But this period of time passes so quickly that it is barely worth mentioning.”

“Why is that, master?”

“Because a notebook is never known for its clean pages, you see. An empty notebook will never have a spot reserved for its preservation in the hall of a historical society. An empty notebook is only interesting to someone who has filled up all of their notebooks and needs a new one to fill with their thoughts and plans.”

“Oh,” said the young man, “Yes, I understand now that if one was to corner the notebook market, they would have control of the commodity that writers, authors, artists, musicians, business people, marketers, and others like them need to write their thoughts down for safe keeping.”

The youth jumped up and spread his arms wide. “Yes, I can see that if I controlled the world’s supply of notebooks, I will never lack for ideas because I can require people to give me ideas in exchange for allowing them to purchase one of my notebooks.”

The young man turned toward his master and bent low. “You truly are wise, sir. You have given me the key to true wealth.”

The wise man sat and stared at his student, his eyes not flinching.

“Sir?”

The wise man continued to sit and stare at his pupil. Slowly his breathing became as still as a rock lying on the bottom of a small mountain stream. “Corner the notebook market,” the old man slowly repeated, “and you will never lack for ideas because you will have plenty of room to write down the ideas that occur to you.”

Dismayed, the young man sat on a pile of earth and pushed dirt around with his foot. “I have to come up with my own ideas?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t have any ideas, sir. None at all. I’m as blank as an empty notebook.”

The master squinted his eyes and grinned. “Did you not have a thought about extracting ideas from people who wanted to buy notebooks? True, it was a poor idea, but yet it was an idea. If your mind can develop one idea, then it can develop more ideas. Perhaps, there will be several good ideas in the lot.”

“Say... I never thought of that!” the pupil said. “What a good idea!”

Tired, the old man shook his head, “Of course. And now, we will move onto another topic of discussion.”

“What?”

“I have another idea for you to consider.”

The pupil sat up tall, pulled his robe straight and leaned forward so that he might hear the words of wisdom that would soon be uttered. “I’m ready to consider your idea, sir. What is it?”

“I have the idea that it is time for you to go home and eat your evening meal.” Pulling his upper robe tightly, the old man prepared to leave. “This lesson is over.”

Designer Do-Over: Kara Swanson

The Original

Computer scrapbook layout by Kara Swanson

Original layout by Kara Swanson

When I first started scrapbooking digitally, one of my first purchases was Thao Cosgrove's Friendship Collection. I loved the richly patterned paper and exquisite embellishments, and I could see that this collection was very versatile. My first layout with it was called “Love” and included an Easter photo of my family.

I still love this collection, but I've learned so much about digital scrapbooking and the principles of design over the past year. I want to update this layout to reflect my current style, yet retain what I really loved about using Thao's collection – namely the contrast between the bright and muted colors.

The Do-Over

Screenshot: Photo crop

The first thing I want to do is start with the same brown paper. I open it up in PSE and begin to reconstruct my layout. I'm using the same photo, but realize that it includes a lot of unnecessary background, so I decided to crop it to draw even more attention to what's really important – our faces. I also decide to add a frame to the photo, using Shalae Tippetts' Aged Photo Frame Embellishment Mini.

Next, I'm going to layer some patterned papers behind my photo. I did this in my previous layout, but I want to vary the shapes a little. Brackets are hot right now, so I use Ursula Schneider's Scrap Simple Paper Templates – Scalloperoo to add the bracket shape.

Screenshot: Photo placement

I've also learned quite a bit about design principles over the past year, so I look at my layout using the Rule of Thirds and make sure that I place my photo at the intersecting point of two gridlines. (Think of your layout as having a tic-tac-toe board on top of it and place your focal point where those lines intersect.)

Finally, I'm going to add some embellishments and my title. I also want to add some journaling, which my previous layout lacked. At the very least, I now try to include the date and names of people in every layout so that future generations will know who is who.

When adding my embellishments, I also am now more aware of good design practice. It's most pleasing to the eye to see embellishments in odd numbers, so I generally include them in sets of one, three or five.

And that's it! I am pleased with how this turned out. I like lots of white space, yet I still feel like I've embellished the layout enough to make it attractive to the viewer.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
