Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

In order to have a ribbon that perfectly matched my layout, I used Brandy Murry’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Ribbons To Go II. After opening the PNG file, I created a copy to work with by choosing Image> Duplicate and closed my original PNG file. Next, I selected Image> Adjustments> Hue/Saturation. In the Hue/Saturation window, I checked the boxes next to "Preview" and "Colorize." I played with the sliders until I had the perfect turquoise color. Finally, I checked "OK" and dragged the newly colored ribbon onto my layout. It’s as easy as that.

To achieve this erased effect on the edges of the green background in which the sketch is blended, I first turned the Blend Mode of the layer with the green paper to ‘Lighter Color.’ Then I clipped (Ctrl+Alt+G) it to Shalae’s ScrapSimple Paper Template Artistic Edges ‘Brush’ in order to erase the edges.

One of the things that I love about digital scrapping is being able to blend type into the background. By selecting different Blend Modes such as "Overlay," "Soft light" or "Multiply" and adjusting the Opacity of the layer, you can easily make it look like your type was hand lettered on your background. If you haven’t tried this technique, you can learn all about it in Shalae Tippets’ Mastering Brushes eBook in the boutique.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create my headline, first I typed in the word "Daddy" in the Impact font. I then clipped my photo to the word, making sure I got as much of my dh and our kids' faces into the letters. I then duplicated the word and used Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Acrylic Bubbles 1801 to give the letters the glossy, 3D bubble look.

Journaling:

"Walk a Little slower, Daddy,"
said a little child so small.
I'm following in your footsteps
and I don't want to fall.

Sometimes your steps are very fast,
sometimes they're hard to see;
So walk a little slower Daddy,
for you are leading me.

Someday when I'm all grown up,
You're what I want to be.
Then I will have a little child
who'll want to follow me.

And I would want to lead just right,
and know that I was true;
So, walk a little slower, Daddy,
for I must follow you!!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

When the quality of a picture is somewhat less than desirable, you have to get creative when incorporating it into your layout. In this case, I liked the facial expressions in both photos, but since one was obviously less clear than the other was (hubby took the pictures on his camera phone on two different days – it’s a “playground tradition” of sorts), I didn’t want to give them equal “weight” on my page.

I took the lesser quality of the two and used the “Overlay” Blend Mode to blend it into my corrugated paper (to which I had already applied the Watercolor Layer Style). Depending on your photo, it may fade out too much, in which case you can duplicate the layer and then adjust the Opacity of one of the two layers until you get just the look you want.

For a finishing touch – and to add to the feeling that the picture is part of the paper – I used the Well Worn Brushes on a low Opacity to erase and blend the edges of the photo.

Journaling: “Yes, Mister Tough Guy... it may be difficult for you to admit, but Haley DOES adore her Daddy. You are strict, but you can also be silly. You are structured, but you also enjoy some spur-of-the-moment fun. You often have to play the “bad guy” when it comes to making this family run the way it should, but I can tell - when I see the way our little girl looks at you – that she absolutely loves you! You may give me a hard time about her being a “Mama’s Girl,” but make no mistake. You have just as much of her heart!”

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Have you ever accidentally done something and had it turn out to be really cool? Well, that’s exactly what happened to me when I was making the word “Daddy” on this page. I started by creating a text box and typing “Daddy” in the text box. I then applied a dark brown paper style from Shalae’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Paper 4901-Biggie. I then decided to try out one of the teal styles from Durin’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Wrinkles 5101 Super Biggie and was surprised at the result it had. Just a touch of the brown was showing through the teal and gave a really cool, aged look to it.

A Designers Life: Brandy Murry

From the Heart

Growing up in a small town in Georgia, we learned to live from the heart. We were a family of females with Momma being the center of our universe. She is the sun, moon and stars to us girls. Sandwiched in the middle of two sisters was a great place to grow up. Though we didn’t have much, there was always yummy southern food and loads of lively chatter and, above all, we loved each other.

A favorite memory is of dressing up my little sister, Jessie, in ballerina costumes and taking her picture. Being nine years younger, she was a real live baby doll to play with. Jessie would always sit in my lap while we read stories, especially “The Narnia Chronicles” by C.S. Lewis. That is where my love of taking pictures for scrapbooking must have started, because those are the memories you want to keep. Even today, Jessie is still my baby, though she is expecting twins of her own now. Come fall, there will be lots of twin babies in future layouts for Scrap Girls, as it was with my other sister Blain and my niece Emily, whom you have maybe seen in many of my layouts.

For our birthdays, Momma would let us choose anything we wanted for our supper. My choice was always salmon croquettes, green butter beans and tomato gravy. If you didn’t grow up in the south, you might never have had this menu, but it is heaven! Yum, I wish I could share a plate with ya’ll right now.

Art has always been a big part of my life. I was forever drawing, painting and taking pictures. One of my first jobs was working for a photographer. I learned a lot from him and was fascinated watching him dress people up for those early glamour shots. After graduating from high school, I got a grant to graphic design school. But life was hard and I had to work three jobs to afford school. Finally, it was just too much. I had to quit school to work full-time. That was a very difficult time and a part of my heart closed when I quit design school.

In the next few years, leaving home, getting married and moving to the big city of Dallas, Texas all seemed to swarm together. I worked in visual merchandising for a chain of furniture stores, buying furniture and creating the room setting for stores. After a move, I found a new job for a home builder. New home construction was booming. I quickly moved up within the company and became a regional manager. It was wonderful to help people make their own dream of building a home come true. For ten years, that was the focus of my life. The hustle and competition of sales, friends and family and then everything changed. The economy shifted, new home sales fell off, my marriage ended and I moved again. This is where Scrap Girls came into my life.

I am so HAPPY! It is as if my life has come full circle. I am doing what I have always dreamed of doing. Designing products and creating layouts for Scrap Girls feels like coming home. My heart had closed a bit 20 years ago and now it is full.

Today, I travel with my sweetheart, Jeroen, taking pictures, capturing moments and turning them into layouts. With me traveling back and forth to The Netherlands, as Jeroen is Dutch, it has easily become one of my favorite places in the world. There is nothing like Holland in spring. The countryside is so fresh, pure and green. When the hyacinths are in bloom, the whole country smells like a flower and it vibrates with color.

But even after seeing Paris and Amsterdam and all of the beautiful places, a perfect day would still include a plate of salmon croquettes with tomato gravy. Taking pictures, designing and spending time with my loved ones. Though my home today isn’t exactly what I imagined, over the years I have learned that life changes, you may be where you thought you never ever would be. Home, a place to belong, becomes important. I always thought a home was made of sticks and bricks, but the saying “home is where the heart is” has never been more true. It was never a place, it was always the people.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
