Customer Muse: Forgive and Forget

We should all have memories, some good some bad, somewhere back in that thing I call a memory bank. Right? Why doesn’t mine work? Why can’t I remember past the meeting of my husband, like my childhood with my biological mother? Try as I might, I just can’t remember her that much. I think it is a sin and a curse that I feel, because I know I love her. Lately, I’ve spent days trying to think back and I can’t. I remember my grandma, dad and step-mom, but not her.

Then, today, it hit me. I’m blocking something, like I tend to do when the pain in my heart is hurting. I tried looking at the few pictures I have and this is of no help. They are only of a few trips and the memories aren’t of her. I see a woman reverting back, almost childlike, and it pains me that she doesn’t understand the word NO in a time of crisis. I am turning into the parent here and I surely don’t like it. I will say that our relationship has been strained for the most part, unfortunately, until the latter years.

Events come to mind that aren’t pleasant and I fight them off and out of my mind and say that this was the way things were done then. Today, however, I have to find peace in my heart to forgive the past. I believe something I don’t think I’ve done to bring the good memories back. Not all of the memories can be bad. She used to sew us dresses and spent hours doing this. The love she put into this shows in the pictures.

Now, in later life, she's trying to make up for the wrong by doing what she believes is the right thing, but this hurts me more than the wrongs done earlier. I gently tell her that it's OK; you don't have to buy me this or do that. I've learned more patience in later life than I had earlier, especially since the people that raised me have passed on.

The expression “forgive and forget” is a hard one. I sometimes forgive, but have difficulty forgetting. Years have passed. She is the last parent I have. It is high time that I realize that she did the best she could with what she had. I believe the forgetting might have led me to a stage of blocking out important things that I may never remember.

Today, I turn a new page. I go to her and ask her forgiveness for not understanding and say that I will treat others the same. Forgiving is easy, forgetting is hard. If we all try harder at forgetting, maybe we won’t miss something important in life either.

Being an early riser (like between 4:00-4:30 am), the first thing I do on my way to the coffee pot is hit the button to pull my email. I love getting the newsletter every morning. I was kind of skeptical when you said we would get one six days a week. I thought it might be a lot of repeat stuff, less quality, less freebies. I should have known better than to ever expect less than your best. It's great, even better! By the way, everyone is getting a big family scrapbook this year for Christmas. I had my pages printed at Scrapbooks to Share; they do fantastic work, found them on the message board.
