Life Muses by Ro

Pill Box image

I take two sets of pills.

One set balances my brain so that I don’t experience Fibromyalgia pain. These medications wake me up and so they are taken in the morning.

A second set relaxes me and puts me to sleep. Fibromyalgia is often accompanied with a sleep disorder. My particular variety doesn’t allow me to go into deep Stage 4 sleep without help. If I don’t get help, I dream grueling things such as seeing myself being chased through the streets of San Francisco by men who are offended by my appearance. Since I generally prefer to avoid nightmares, I take my night medications without complaint.

Occasionally – oh say those times when my mind is occupied with the events and concerns of the day – I wander into the bathroom and throw a set of pills down my throat. Then I wander off to bed, expecting to go to sleep very quickly. But when I find my mind racing and I feel like I could continue working for hours, I know that I’ve mistakenly taken the wrong pills.

Man... I hate it when I do that.

My doctor probably wouldn’t approve, but at that point, I have no other option: I go back into the bathroom and take my night pills, go back to bed and wait for the sleep to come. Since the pills are fighting each other, it takes more time than usual for the sleeping pills to do their job.

Tonight I made this mistake. While I waited to go to sleep, I made a blog post, downloaded photos from my camera, filed and renamed them, and wrote two muses and now that that is completed, I am beginning to feel a little sleepy. I feel hopeful that I’ll get a little rest tonight.

Occasionally, I mention my Fibromyalgia in one of these muses. I don’t talk about it much... it’s pretty much under control – as long as I take my pills correctly and don’t push myself too hard. I am also experienced enough to know that if I do something physically demanding (like attending an intense conference in a new city for a week), I’ll need some recovery time to get rid of the symptoms again.

It’s the routine of my life.

I mention it today because I know that many of you have had Fibromyalgia for a long time, have just been diagnosed with it, are wondering if you might have it, or perhaps, know someone with it.

The medical profession has come a long way in the past 20 years in their understanding of this illness. When I first developed symptoms, the doctors worried that I might have MS (I don’t). One particular fellow wrote in my chart that I am a hypochondriac. The next doctor sent me to a psychologist to be tested because he wanted the results entered into my chart. He knew that I wasn’t a hypochondriac.

It was a long, hard road to discover a solution that works for me. But I found them a couple of years ago at the hands of Dr. N. Lee Smith – a notable specialist in Fibromyalgia. I feel blessed to have been cared for by him. I feel led to him because getting my Fibromyalgia under control has allowed me to enjoy running Scrap Girls.

And so – if you or one of your loved ones struggle with Fibromyalgia – don’t give up. There are answers and new medications that will help. You can live a very good life. Go out and find them. It is worth the effort to get your life back.

I suppose the thing I want you to know the most is this: You are not alone in your struggle with Fibromyalgia. Good things can happen to you and you can achieve and be happy despite it. Maybe you appreciate them even more because you know how much it took for you to be able to do the things that are required.

Just know that I care, because I’ve been there and still am there along side of you.

Tutorial: How to Distress Brushes

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows.

I love digital scrapbooking brushes and I simply can’t get enough of them, as is evident by my burgeoning collection that I have purchased and designed over recent years. I find them immensely useful for adding my own unique touches to layouts and photos. As I am a bit of a grunge girl, my favorite technique is to get a perfectly pristine brush and mess it up with scratches and scrapes. Not only does this “grunge” up the brush, it also prevents the brush from standing out too much and distracting from the focus of the layout. I like to complement with brushes – not distract!

First, the most important thing to remember is to place each brush stroke on its own layer. That way, not only can you can play with different Blend Modes and effects, but if you make a mistake, you can simply delete that layer and begin again. TIP: I always give my layers relevant names, as this makes it so much easier to identify which one you are working on and prevents mistakes.

Screenshot: Solid Brush

I am going to start with a plain green paper from my Flowering Flourishes Collection. First, I load Brush Set: Flowering Flourishes Flowers into my Brushes Palette and place a floral brush on a separate layer.

Screenshot: Blend Mode applied

To blend the flower into the paper for a more subtle effect, play with the Blend and Opacity Modes. I suggest that you use "Screen" Blend Mode at 89% Opacity to achieve the look below. Then select the Eraser Tool in the Tools Palette and load Brush Set: Rustic Crush 2 Biggie. Select one of the grungy brushes to use as an eraser and erase areas of the flower to create cracks and scratches which will reveal the green background below.

Screenshot: Grunge brushes used

Distressing brushes - it’s simple, quick and so much fun.

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
