Before you stands a great block of marble. Inside the block is a statue of a man with loving eyes, who will look at you forever and give you peace. But before you can gaze upon his face, you must extract him from the marble.
You tell your friends, “There is a great man inside of the marble.”
“I do not see him,” they reply. “I see a block of stone.”
But you do not let their failure to see the statue discourage you. He is there. You know it. You sense it. You feel it.
You take out your tools and begin patiently chipping away at the marble. Because this is a great block of stone, the chipping will continue for a long time. It may be possible that years will pass before you see your statue emerge from its marble encasing. But as long as you keep chipping... chipping... chipping away, you will eventually stand in front of your kindly-eyed man and gaze at his eyes.
Thus the artist believes. Thus the man is able to continue his work in the face of great odds. He does not consider how many chips it will take until his statue stands before him. He concentrates on making each cut accurate so that he will not destroy, but find his goal.
And so it is with any great goal. It is accomplished by endless chipping away at the mountain of tasks until we realize our dream. But if we stop in the middle of the chipping because we tire of it the work, if we fail to continue because we can’t keep our dream placed firmly in our minds, if we wander away from the sheer monotony of the task of chipping because we wish to do something more exciting, we will never see our objective standing before our eyes.
I am convinced that the difficulty many people have in their lives is that they tire of monotony of chipping. They feel that they must get all of the chipping done at once (or in a very short amount of time) or they have failed. They imagine that there might be some other thing available to them in their life that will not require some measure of monotonous chipping. Or they don’t stand back at the beginning of their journey and consider how much chipping this goal might take to achieve and ask if the end goal is worth the moments they must give up in other areas of their life so that they might chip, chip, chip away.
Sometimes, when people ask me how to achieve a certain goal, I will begin to describe all of the many things that must be done to realize it. When they respond to the list of tasks, I can hear the dismay in their voices and I can feel their defensiveness towards their new truth vibrating through space. This is not what they wished to hear. This is not what they wanted to know. They wanted to learn that it was going to be easy. They hoped to find out that they would be able to achieve it in a few days, weeks or months.
But most major goals, if they are worthy, are made up of strings of small goal-pearls and small goal-pearls are achieved by chip, chip, chipping away at tasks that are often grueling or tedious in nature.
My mother once told me, “Rozanne, you must learn to love to work because you will spend most of your life doing it.”
How wise she was. How right she was. I have learned to enjoy mundane chipping that accompanies even the most satisfying work. I know tedious chipping gets me closer to my goals because I anticipate the satisfaction I’ll feel once I accomplish them. And while I am not a master artist that can bring forth a man with kindly eyes from a block of marble, I am able to use my God-given talents through my effort and His help and guidance to make lives a little bit better and that is good enough for me.

Best of the Message Board |
These questions and answers come
from the users on our messageboard. We thought you might find them
useful and interesting too. Enjoy!

Question: I would like to know how to fix (sun) lighting on a face in a photo please. I use Photoshop Elements 5.0, but I am very new to the program and still learning how to do things. I have posted a photo, “I CAN read, Grandma,” in the Family gallery which will show the problem for those that would like to see what needs to be fixed. All help is appreciated. Thanks heaps!
Answer 1: First of all, welcome to Scrap Girls! I have to recommend a book that I borrowed from our local library, “The Photoshop Elements 5 Book For Digital Photographers” by Scott Kelby. I have it requested again and I would love to purchase it. It has lots of great techniques and tricks for fixing your photos!
Answer 2: I will add my hello and welcome also! In PSE 5, I would go to Enhance> Adjust Lighting> Shadows/Highlights. You can play with those sliders and see what you get. You can also go to Enhance> Lighting> Levels and try moving the right marker in towards the center a bit.
If those don't get the results you want, you might want to try using the Burn Tool with a large, soft brush. You might have to play with the Exposure (in the options bar) a bit to get it subtle. Another good book is Matt Kloskowski's “The Photoshop Elements 5 Restoration & Retouching Book.”
Answer 3: I would go with the suggestion to play with the sliders on Shadows/Highlights. Just don't try to get rid of it too much. I think the way that the sunlight is hitting her face there really adds something to that photo.
It may look great as a black and white shot, too.
Answer 4: You can try this. (I have PS though, not PSE, so the commands may be slightly different.) Using a soft-edged Selection Tool - either a very soft-edged quick mask or a large feathered selection - select the area on her face that is over exposed. Then you can use Curves (if they're in PSE), Levels or the other sliders above. This should allow you to change just that area of the photo, and if the feathering is soft enough, it shouldn't leave you a hard line between what's been changed and what's not. I would duplicate the layer and work on the duplicated layer first, just to make sure. I wouldn't fix it too much because I actually like the lighting on her face. Hope this helps and welcome to Scrap Girls!

Question: I have filled up both of my internal hard drives! I currently have a single EHD to back up the internal HDs. I am having virtual memory problems because the HDs are maxed out. What I want to do is add RAM to my computer and eliminate files. Before I do that, I want to back up my EHD with another EHD. I am trying to decide if I want another desktop EHD or a portable EHD. Eventually, I could have an additional desktop EHD as well as a portable EHD, but for right now I need to choose one or other.
I have never deleted ANY files from my internal HD and doing so freaks me out! I need speed and space. My computer is all jammed up right now and I feel a sense of urgency to open space up before my computer can't think at all anymore. What do you all think about a portable EHD over a desktop EHD? Are they as reliable? Anyone have problems with the portable? Or should I just get an additional desktop EHD and use a thumb drive or DVD's to carry files around? (Like to Utah in October.)
Answer 1: I’ve only had my portable EHD for a short time, so maybe I'm not the best one to answer this. I did, however, take it on a trip and it was great that you can just pick it up and go. The desktop ones are quite a bit larger, so I don’t think it would be as easy. Plus, you have to have room for a larger one in your work area. I have all of my scrapping things on my EHD and none on my IHD. I think it runs a lot nicer that way. Plus, I burn backups quite often, just in case. Sounds like you have a big decision ahead of you. I hope you figure out what is right for you.
Answer 2: I happen to have both. I initially purchased a desktop EHD (relies on electrical power) and moved all of my scrapping supplies to it. It freed up my laptop and it was necessary. I burn DVDs of all my zip files each month and I use Mozy to back up both my laptop and my EHD. Now that I had all of my supplies on the EHD, I found that it was not at all helpful for scrapping away from home. So, I purchased a small portable that powers with a USB port. It also contains all of my supplies, plus some newsletter tutorials, etc. to help me if I’m away from home or on vacation. I just love this set up. So, that being said, my two cents would be to vote for a portable, back up all files to DVDs and delete them from your computer hard drive, and then back up automatically with an online company.

Question: Hi all. I purchased Melissa Renfro's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Paper Tears PSE 5001 the other day and when I opened the file up, it had three things in it: an .ASL file, an .ATN file and a .TPL file. I know the ASL is a styles thing and ATN is the action, but it wasn't clear on what the TPL file was. Do I need to install it? And if so, where in the world does it go? I tried looking in all of the folders for PSE (I have PSE 6) and couldn't see anything with TPL to it. Thanks for the help!
Answer 1: This action comes with a wonderful PDF file that explains everything, complete with screen shots. You might want to check the download. If you didn't get it, you might email Angie at [email protected] and see if she can send it to you! It really helps a lot!
Response Answer: Yes, I have read the PDF file that came with it and it did not seem to help me. It said the file was a "tool preset file" and that I will find these in my folders, but I have not found anything like this. The instructions just didn't help me much.
Answer 2: With PSE open, drag and drop the TPL file over PSE and it will automatically go where it needs to go. This will work with actions and brushes, too. |

Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.
Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
