Life Muses by Ro: Avoiding Digital Scrapbooking Meltdowns – Part 2

Burning a CD
Originally uploaded by corsec67
Maybe this isn't exactly the picture I should use when advising you to back up your digital scrapbooking supplies and your digital photos on DVDs, right? But it does speak volumes about what it is like to lose your data.
Years ago, my husband and son got the bright idea that they needed to back up our computer before they upgraded us to Windows 95. Of course, they didn't know what they were doing... and they backed me up to a zip drive... and then they failed to check the data for accuracy after they were finished. This meant that once my computer had the new operating system on it, all of my data (years of composing - orchestrations - songs - you name it) was gone.
So now that I've horrified you with a lost data story, let's talk about how you can back up your digital scrapbooking layouts, supplies and photos to DVDs.
Here are the critical things to remember:
1. Back up your files to DVD+R, as this media type is the most stable and reliable. Do not use rewritable media (such as CD-RW or DVD-RW).
2. Do not use labels (stickers) on your DVDs.
3. If you write on the label, make sure that the marker is non-solvent (the non-stinky kind).
4. The DVDs should be stored vertically. You want to protect the surface.
5. It's a good idea to create a contact sheet so that you can remember what you have placed on the DVD. It is much easier than going through your stash of DVDs when you are trying to locate a single photo or digital scrapbooking paper.
Making a Contact Sheet
Many software programs have options for making contact sheets, but if you use a PC, there is a lazy-daisy way and I'm always up for those. Fast is good. Here's all you do. (Note: I'm demonstrating this on an XP computer. I’m going to show you how to do this again in more detail on a Vista computer in an upcoming episode of this series.)
1. Browse to the folder that holds the files you want to make the contact sheet for.
2. Right-click on one of the files and then choose the Photo Printer Wizard option.

3. Select all of the photos or digital scrapbooking supply images you want to be on the contact sheet.

4. Go through the printer dialog

5. When you go on, the contact sheets will be sent to your printer.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own
muse to [email protected]. If it is selected
for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have
fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;
engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems,
another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does
not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not
have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Answer
a survey question and maybe you'll win a portable hard drive!
Okay blog and Scrap Girls newsletter fans...
I'm going to do a question survey in my blog and
then draw a name from the people who respond to the question
to see who wins this portable external hard drive. It
will be perfect to take with you when you go to crops, on vacation
or even perhaps, the Scrap
Girls Digital Scrap Link Convention in Salt Lake City this
October! (That is, if you hurry up and get one of the remaining
slots.) You can throw your photos and supplies on it you want
to use while you are away from home and then transfer them back
onto your bigger computer or storage media when you come back
again. Awesome!
Just enter your reply at the bottom of the blog
post and you'll be entered into the contest. You must give
me your email address (it won't be visible to blog viewers)
so that I can email you should you win. It would be best if
you subscribe to my blog because I will announce the winner
in it, and that will make sure you find out if you are the
winner!

QUESTION: How did you find
Scrap Girls?
You have until Friday, May 30th, 5PM MDT to enter the contest. |

Tutorial: Tinting Black & White Photos
Note: Tutorial Created using Photoshop Elements 5.0.
If you have seen scrappers tint photos with chalk, here's a great digital way to get the same effect.
Start by changing your color photo to black and white. In PSE5, you do this by selecting
Enhance>Convert to Black & White or adjust the saturation all the way down.

Next, create a new layer on top of your photo. Change the opacity of this layer to around 32%.

Next, select a soft edge brush around 200 pixels in size and choose a color you would like to “chalk” or “tint” with. For this photo I am choosing beach colors: sandy brown and blues.

Using the brush, move your mouse over the areas that you want to tint. It's OK if you brush some color in areas you don't want, be free with it. You can always go back over it later with the eraser.

Continue with coloring other areas of your photo. You'll notice that I got some of the blue on the faces of my subjects. So we'll take that off now.

Choose the eraser, approximately the same size as your brush and bring the opacity down to around 35-36%. You want to brush away some of the color, but not make it obvious. Then, just stroke over the areas that you want to clean up.

Next, I merge the layers together and add a sepia tint to the entire photo to give it a more vintage look. Lower the opacity of the sepia layer to 21% to allow your color to show through. To finish the layout, add your embellishments and journaling.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
