Life Muses by Ro: Stop, Look and Listen
Stop, look and listen before you cross the street.
Cars can go faster than little children’s feet.
This little rhyme was drilled into our kindergarten class as a means
of attempting to keep us safe as we walked to school each morning.
I was sitting in my Sacred Space chair this morning, looking out of
my window at my trees that are starting to turn green, when all of
the many things I can do, should do or might do began flooding through
my mind.
My mind darted about here and there, trying to come up with
a method of turning off the flow. “Should I write it down?” I
wondered. But I quickly realized that this wouldn’t work because
I already have pages of items listed in my notebook.
My mind started
to freeze up. But then, I heard the phrase, “Stop,
look and listen before you cross the street...”
I considered how
it might apply to my situation. “Yes, I need
to stop and breathe,” I realized. “I am overwhelmed.”
I
began to breathe in and out slowly.
“Look? I need to look? At
what?” I asked myself.
“Look up. Just look up.”
I looked up again and out of the
window. As soon as I did, I felt more relaxed. I was reminded that
I spent too much time with my head buried in my computer screen. I
don’t walk away often enough
and give my brain time to rest when I am feeling stressed. I don’t
sit back occasionally and look around the room. I simply need to give
my brain a chance to catch up and the mere act of looking elsewhere
can do this.
“Listen. How can I listen?”
The answer came. “Sit
here and listen to yourself. Just listen until the item you need to
work on first comes to your mind. When it does, do it. Then, stop and
listen again.”
“Yes, that’s it,” I thought,
relieved. “I
have to keep reminding myself that I can only do one thing at a time.
Just keep chipping away at the issues and, eventually, I’ll see
progress.”
And so, I listened... I listened and I heard, “Write
this down.”
And so, I have done that. My first task of the day
was to say to you, “Stop,
look and listen before you cross the street...”

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own
muse to [email protected]. If it is selected
for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have
fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;
engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems,
another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does
not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not
have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Answer
a survey question and maybe you'll win a portable hard drive!
Okay blog and Scrap Girls newsletter fans...
I'm going to do a question survey in my blog and
then draw a name from the people who respond to the question
to see who wins this portable external hard drive. It
will be perfect to take with you when you go to crops, on vacation
or even perhaps, the Scrap
Girls Digital Scrap Link Convention in Salt Lake City this
October! (That is, if you hurry up and get one of the remaining
slots.) You can throw your photos and supplies on it you want
to use while you are away from home and then transfer them back
onto your bigger computer or storage media when you come back
again. Awesome!
Just enter your reply at the bottom of the blog
post and you'll be entered into the contest. You must give
me your email address (it won't be visible to blog viewers)
so that I can email you should you win. It would be best if
you subscribe to my blog because I will announce the winner
in it, and that will make sure you find out if you are the
winner!

Tutorial: Demystifying Clipping Masks
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop
CS3 with Windows XP.
I love clipping masks and use them in every layout. Literally. They're
a great and non-destructive way to “cut” shapes from digital
scrapbooking papers, elements and photos. For your shape, you can use
digital layout templates' elements, paper and embellishment templates,
custom shapes, brushes and fonts. Here's how you create a clipping
mask in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
For my layout, I first chose
my focal-point photograph. It's a very warm picture of my husband and
me from our wedding photo album. It has a lot of curves in its composition,
so I decided to echo that in my layout. I found the ScrapSimple
Digital Layout Templates - Layered: Rip Torn in the Scrap Girls
Boutique to be perfect for my project.
To create a clipping mask, you
need to drag the picture over the rectangular shape. Now, create the
clipping mask using one of these methods:

- Press Ctrl+G (Command+G for Mac) for Photoshop CS
and PSE and Alt+Ctrl+G (Option+Command+G for Mac)
for Photoshop CS2 and CS3 or

After you create a clipping mask, your Layers Palette
will look like this.
The great thing about clipping masks is that you
can move both layers independently. So if you decide that some part
of the picture doesn't show or shows too much, you can easily make
changes. You can even resize both layers independently. But if you
want to move/resize them together, you need to select both layers.

Clipping
masks are also useful when you want to apply the Adjustment Layer to
only one of the layers. For example, when you want to change the color
of one of the embellishments.

Remember that you may have more than one
layer clipped. For example, you may clip a photograph and then change
it to black and white with a clipped Adjustment Layer above. The advantage
of this method is that you can always go back and tweak your Adjustment
Layer.
For this layout, I left my photos in color. To complement their
colors, I chose the Feather Collection papers and elements.
I clipped one of the papers with ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Scalloperoo to
give it a nice scalloped edge. I clipped the rest of the photographs,
embellished the page, added drop shadows and typed the journaling.
Here's my finished layout:

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |
