Life Muses by Ro: Try Something Else

Try something else if that doesn’t work.

I came up with the idea for this muse and then began sifting through my memories, looking for just the right one to illustrate my point.

My first story is about our favorite dog, Gidget, and her determination to dig out from under our chain link fence no matter what barrier we put in front of it. She wanted to experience life on the other side of that fence and would not be held back. We, in turn, kept trying various tricks to keep her in the yard.

At last, Gidget determined that she preferred staying in the yard and quit trying to run away. Consequently, we stopped locking her in the yard. She had all of the freedom she wanted and yet she used her freedom to remain at home.

My next thought I’ll tell you is about my daughter, Julianne. She is a very determined soul who is quite convincing when making arguments meant to persuade you that you need to give her what she wants. If she is told no, she will regroup and will come at you from a different angle. Another “no” just means that she will put her talents toward discovering a different means of persuasion.

I used to tell Julianne that she ought to be a lawyer. She now says she wishes to be a child psychologist. Since she has personally used all of the excuses a child can dream up, this might be a successful endeavor. It will be difficult for a child to get anything by her.

After considering my story of Julianne, I have decided that it doesn’t illustrate my point well enough. I need to come up with something more relevant.

ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001 are also available.

It occurs to me to tell you about my son, James. Like Gidget, he spent most of his formative years trying to climb under the family fence and escape what he considered a less than adequate situation. (He’s adopted, doesn’t care for it, and had the attitude for many years that if he had to be adopted, then he had lost the ‘adoption lotto’ by being placed with our family.) Because he doesn’t look like his dad and me, he decided to pretend that he wasn’t our son.

For ten years, his friends didn’t realize that we were his parents. Because they are all Latino and because he is tall, dark and handsome, they thought he was Latino, too. He didn’t do anything to clear up their confusion because he was trying to run away from home without actually leaving us. In fact, over time he became so involved in this false life of his that I had to pull out his birth certificate and remind him who his birth mother declared him to be.

“There is no shame in being Caucasian, James,” I said. “You have to accept who you are.”

Those were frustrating years for everyone. We tried to keep him involved in the family, to eat dinner with us, to go places with us, but he always declined. We had multiple holiday dinners and family events without him because he wouldn’t show up.

But then, he moved out. He had to start dealing with the realities of adult life. He found himself coming home and asking his dad and mom what to do about this... or that... or something else....

Unexpectedly, I have begun discovering James in the family room, sprawled out on the floor watching TV with his brother and dad. (The siren song of the new TV was too strong for him, I suppose.) And then, I stumbled upon him setting up shelves in the storage room... and putting things on those shelves... and heard him advise me about the advantages of having the shelves be of certain heights rather than other heights. And then, miracle of miracles, after a seven year absence, he chose to eat Sunday dinner with the family.

I opened the gate to let him go, but the boy discovered, in his freedom, that he preferred his home and family.

People are unique. Circumstances are different. Don’t try to pound your square peg into a diamond-shaped hole. Just wait awhile. Life has a way of knocking off the fourth corner on its own and then the peg will fit in just fine. Sometimes, the best thing to try when we are faced with a difficult situation is to simply wait it out while repeating, “This, too, shall pass.”

I have now given you multiple examples of the main theme of this particular muse. But, more importantly, you have seen me stop and start again multiple times as I attempted to explain to you that even if your first few attempts are awkward or failures, if the end goal is worth having, keep trying... just keep trying.

- Ro

It will be perfect to take with you when you go to crops, on vacation or even perhaps, the Scrap Girls Digital Scrap Link Convention in Salt Lake City this October! (That is, if you hurry up and get one of the remaining slots.) You can throw your photos and supplies on it you want to use while you are away from home and then transfer them back onto your bigger computer or storage media when you come back again. Awesome!

Just enter your reply at the bottom of the blog post and you'll be entered into the contest. You must give me your email address (it won't be visible to blog viewers) so that I can email you should you win. Designer Do-Over: Shalae Tippetts

My Original

Original by Shalae Tippetts

This is one of the first scrapbook layouts that I created with an old digital kit. I look at it now and am overwhelmed by all that pink and grey that is dominating the whole layout. It’s just too much and the picture gets lost in all of it. I didn’t mind the design aspect so much and decided to keep a similar feel in my new layout. The photo also has a lot of blue tones in it and was taken with a lower quality camera. This resulted in the picture showing lots of noise and being more pixilated.

My Do Over

The first thing that I decided do is to readjust the photo. I have another similar photo that I really like and want to add it to the layout also. First, I adjust the variations of color on the photos to create more realistic colors and lighting. I apply a slight Gaussian blur to the photo to lessen the noise and pixels. I then adjust the levels until I get a photo that is decent, despite the poor camera it was taken with. I then add some Aged Photo Frames to finish the photos.

Next, I chose lighter papers, as I want my pictures to be the focal point of my digital scrapbook layout. I arrange the two photos on the left side in a similar format to my earlier layout. I then add a strip of paper and a ribbon going horizontal to mimic my horizontal lines in the first layout. I choose papers and colors that will not be too distracting or bold, taking away from the focal point of my photos.

I then add a few scrapbook embellishments to pull your eye to the photos and to mimic the title and circles I had in my first layout. I decide to add a different title, but place it in the same bottom left-hand corner. I add a digital sticker to create an uneven cluster with the photos. I need something to balance out these two embellishments and decide to put a wrapped ribbon across the top of the large photo, pulling the two photos together with the way the ribbon overlaps and touches the bottom photo.

To finish it off, I put some very simple small journaling across the top of the ribbon to create that additional horizontal element that the earlier layout had a lot of. By keeping all of the horizontal elements to a minimum, it puts the emphasis on my photos, rather than the background. My finished layout is simple, clean and puts the dominance on my cute little girl, rather than the harsh, bright pink backgrounds of my original layout.

  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
