Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Do you have certain memories where the details are not clear, but
you remember exactly how you felt at that moment? I tried to capture
this feeling in my layout with Blend Modes and erasing.
First, I composed
my photos and some embellies using Gillian Hurst’s
Turquoise Canvas Paper from her Flowering Flourishes Collection as
my background paper. Then I chose another paper from the same collection,
Scratchy Dots and set its Blend Mode to “Darken.” I
put this paper as the topmost layer. With this paper actively selected,
I erase over portions of the layout that I would like to show through.
I used Brandie Valenzuela’s Grungelle Brush Set - Smudge set
at 60% Opacity and around 450 pixels to do this. Any grungy or scratchy
brush will also work.
The last step is to add my journaling and some
brightly colored flowers to add contrast to the dreamy look of the
layout. I placed these items on layers above the second paper.
Journaling
reads:
Boracay was just beginning to be discovered. Nothing fazed us,
not the multiple transportation transfers to get to the island, not
the rustic accommodations. We had food, drinks, playing cards,
the sand, the sea and good company. We were happy.
I have been back
to the island many times after that summer, each
time with better food, better accommodations and faster transport.
But somehow, nothing can compare to that summer when I was 17.
Maybe
it was the combination of youth, the discovery of a new place, and
the friends I was with.
Next year I plan to take my children to the
island. It will be their first time. Perhaps through their eyes I can
recapture that perfect summer.

To get the effect on my Eiffel Tower photo, I used Brandy Murry’s
ScrapSimple Tools – Actions: Sketch It PSE 8501 in Sepia
mode. Once I got the sketch to appear just as I wanted, I dragged it
onto my layout. I
then adjusted the Blend Mode to the "Soft Light" setting
to get the faded sketch appearance I was going for.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Sometimes, in order to tie an embellishment in to your project (particularly
if you’ve already used ScrapSimple Tools – Styles on
other elements), the best thing to do is use the same or coordinating ScrapSimple
Tools – Styles on that embellishment as well. In this case,
I was using the word “tags” from Gillian’s African
Beat Collection Biggie, but the colors didn’t exactly coordinate
with my background.
The method I use is to duplicate the embellishment
twice (so you will end up with three identical layers). On the top
layer, you apply the Layer Style - in this case, Durin’s Unique
5104. At this point you’ll just have a solid element, which
doesn’t
work if there was writing there originally. So, you will need to merge
that top layer with the next layer down. You will see now that the
layer style icon will go away once the layers are merged. (Your software
may allow you to “Simplify Layer,” in which case you can
just duplicate the original element once, apply the style and then
Simplify.) With the layer “Simplified” now, you can play
with your Blend Modes to bring your original text back “up” through
the Layer Style.

A Designer's Life: Cherise
Oleson
A Little Girl’s Dream
When I was a young girl, people asked me (as people often do) what
I wanted to be when I grew up. My best friend and I always replied
that we wanted to be artists. I was blessed with parents who were creative
people in their own ways and they never discouraged me from that thought.
As I grew, I took a few art classes here and there to keep that interest
alive. But, over the years, it kind of got pushed to the back burner.
New interests in math and science took over. As a senior in high school,
I had decided that I would major in Electrical Engineering when I went
to college.
So, I entered college the following year and took Calculus,
Physics, Computer Science and a myriad of other supporting courses.
I enjoyed them and did fairly well in them, better in some than others!
Things progressed and I was nearing the end of my sophomore year. I
had finished all of the prerequisites for electrical engineering and,
the following semester, I would finally be able to take an actual engineering
course. I was excited. Or maybe I should say, “I should have
been excited.” In
reality, I wasn’t really very excited. I woke up one morning
and realized that I was not excited about getting up every morning
and going to work as an electrical engineer. I tried to think about
what would excite me.
I was working as a secretary to put myself through
school at the time and I happened to be a secretary in the Department
of Design. I loved going to work each day and taking time to see all
of the art and designs hanging in the halls there. I saw student projects
in Interior Design and Graphic Design and Illustration. I realized
that this was what was exciting to me.
After talking with some of the
professors in the design department and going through the application
process (they only accept a certain amount of students each year into
the program), I started on my path to becoming a graphic designer.
There were ups and downs and the road was a difficult one at times.
But it was also very rewarding. And, because I was already a junior
when I started the four-year program, it took me a little longer to
get through college than I had anticipated. But when I finally graduated
with my BFA in Graphic Design, I knew that I had made the right decision.
I knew I had found what made me excited to get up in the morning.
After
I graduated from college, I worked for a creative agency in San Francisco
for a couple years. Then, I met my husband, we were married, and I
left my job to be with him as he finished his PhD in another state.
I continued to design a little here and there as a freelancer, but
as we welcomed our children into our family one by one, the time for
freelancing grew shorter and shorter.
I love being a mom and caring
for my family, but I realized last summer that something was missing
from my life. It had been at least two years since I had even done
any freelance work and the designer in me was itching to get out. That’s
when I found Scrap Girls. I had been a paper scrapbooker for years,
but it wasn’t until last summer
that I was first introduced to digital scrapbooking. As soon as I discovered
it, I could feel a certain fire reigniting inside me. I knew that this
was what I was meant to do.
I was thrilled when Ro and Valerie invited
me to be a Product Designer for Scrap Girls. I get up each day, excited
about new products and ideas that I can create and I love every aspect
of it. I’m especially
happy that the dream of a little five-year-old girl to be an artist when
she grew up has finally come true.

Favorite product I've designed:
ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates - Layered: 4x6 Round Up

Note: Commercial license versions
of ScrapSimple
Digital Layout Album Templates - Layered: 4x6 Round Up are also available.
I love the ease of digital layout templates and I love the “new” 4x6
craze for making quick little albums. This product combines the ease
of digital layout templates and the fun 4x6 size in one. I can customize
the look of each 4x6 layout and use them over and over. They will look
unique each time. And the built-in text paths on these templates are
an extra bonus!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
