Tutorial: How to Turn Your Photos Into Pop Art
Note: Tutorial Created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP.
Turning your photos into pop art is a great way to display them in
many ways. You can print the finished art, frame it or display on canvas.
You can print it on transfer paper and iron it onto your shirt, jacket,
purse, etc. You can also use your art to order some great personalized
gifts such as mugs, mouse pads, etc. And, of course, you can use it in
your layouts. Here's how to do that in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
First,
you need to choose a photograph – try to find a photo in which
the subject is illuminated from the front. A photo with a white background
is perfect. If you don't have one, you will need to extract your subject
from the background. To do that, use the Lasso Tool. I like to use the
Polygonal Lasso Tool. Click around your subject's face and torso. Once
you complete the selection, press Ctrl+J. It will create a new
layer with your selection copied into it.
Call this layer “Face.” Create another new layer underneath,
fill it with white and name it “Background.” Next, go to
the “Face” layer and add just a little bit of blur to your
photo - Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur. I chose 2.5 pixels
here. The more blur you add, the less detail you'll get in the end.
Now
the magic comes in. Go to Image> Adjustments> Threshold.
Your image instantly converts to black and white “pop art.” Play
with the Threshold dialog box. If you move the slider to the left, you
will get less black and if you slide it to the right, you will get more
black. Click "OK" once you like the results. If your image has too much
detail you'll get a lot of grain. You may want to undo blurring and try
adding it again.
Next, load the selection by Ctrl+Clicking on the “Face” thumbnail
in the layers palette. Create a new layer underneath “Face” and
call it “Face Fill.” Fill the selection with white - Edit> Fill> White.
Go back to the “Face” layer. Now go to Select> Color
Range and click on white. Click "OK" and then Delete.
Your Layers Palette should look like this.
In order to print the finished work at 8x10 inches, nine 2.6 x 3.3
in tiles will be needed.
Open the new document (2.6 x 3.3 in at 300 dpi)
and Shift+Drag two of the layers you've been working on (Face and Face
Fill). Resize them together and position them the way you want them to
look. Now, you once again have three layers. The bottom layer is called “Background,” but
is locked. You can't modify it. To unlock it, double-click on it and
type the name. (I called it “Background.”)
Next, you need to lock the transparent pixels of the two top layers.
To do that, press the small square on the very left. Locks should show
on each layer.
Now, it's time to add some color. I open the “Che
Guevara” poster by Andy Warhol, which I downloaded from the Internet,
and sampled its colors. Color each layer by filling it with the foreground
color you just sampled (press Alt+Backspace to do that really
quickly.) Save your file as a PSD document, but do not close it yet.
Call it “Tile” and
then flatten the image.
Open the new document (8x10 at 300 dpi). This
is your final destination document. Drag your first tile and move it
into position. Go back into the “Tile” file and undo flattening.
Color the layers again. Repeat all of the steps until you have all nine
tiles ready and moved into the final destination document. Remember – save
your “Tile” document unflattened! You may now close it.
Go to the tiled document and save it as a PSD file if you want to. Flatten
it and save as a JPG.

May Board Game: Bingo
It's that time
again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message
Board Forum in May! Pick 25 words from the list provided
in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with
a subject line saying "BINGO CARD" and including
your message board user name by Sunday, May 4th in order
to play in the first round, which will begin Monday May
5th. Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will
call 5 random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15
of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call
bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is
called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will
begin the following day. All winners win a $5 Gift Certificate
to the Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please
remember that each person can only win one round during
the month. Have fun!

first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send
