Life Muses by Ro: Driving Me Crazy

Note from Ro: (This muse is stolen from the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures.)

(Conversation overheard)

Ro: Where are we going?

V: Over there.

Ro: But we just got here. Why are we going over there?

V: Because you wanted to go over there.

Ro: I thought we were going somewhere else. Where are we going again?

V: Crazy, Ro. You're driving me crazy.

Ro: No, I'm not. Because you're the one who is driving. See. That's you behind the wheel right now. I'm over here being all innocent.

V: You? Innocent.

Ro: Yeah. I'm innocent. It's just me and my little digital camera trying to make you...

V: Crazy.

Ro: Is it working?

V: Almost.

- Ro

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Note from Ro: Answer a survey question and maybe you'll win a portable hard drive!

Okay blog and Scrap Girls newsletter fans...

I'm going to do a question survey in my blog and then draw a name from the people who respond to the question to see who wins this portable external hard drive. It will be perfect to take with you when you go to crops, on vacation or even perhaps, the Scrap Girls Digital Scrap Link Convention in Salt Lake City this October! (That is, if you hurry up and get one of the remaining slots.) You can throw your photos and supplies on it you want to use while you are away from home and then transfer them back onto your bigger computer or storage media when you come back again. Awesome!

Just enter your reply at the bottom of the blog post and you'll be entered into the contest. You must give me your email address (it won't be visible to blog viewers) so that I can email you should you win. It would be best if you subscribe to my blog because I will announce the winner in it, and that will make sure you find out if you are the winner!

Western Digital WDXMS1200TN Passport 120 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

QUESTION: How did you find Scrap Girls?

You have until Friday, May 30th, 5PM MDT to enter the contest.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Alphas

Note: This product review written with screenshots from using PSPX in Windows XP.

How many times have you gone to make a layout and wasted lots of time looking for the perfect font for your title?  I have to admit, I do it from time to time.  I often forget about the alphas that are included in SG’s collections. So what’s so cool about alphas you ask?  Well, alphas are basically fonts that have already been made to coordinate with a collection.  Using alphas make the task of creating titles and word art for your layout much easier because half the work has already been done for you.  We all know that titles and word art help to bring interest and meaning to your photos.  So when using alphas, the only thing you really need to do is figure out how you’re going to use them creatively.  That’s what makes digi scrapping so much fun.  You’re never limited. You can do anything you want with them.

So what are some creative ways to use alphas?  There are all kinds of ways I’m sure but here are few off hand that I could think of.

  • Add a bevel

  • Mix up different size alphas.

  • Use a digital staple or pin to adhere them to your layout.

  • Make a sticker out of an alpha by adding a white border beneath it.

  • Pile them on top of each other.

  • Mix and match alphas from different collections.

  • Make them hang off of a digital ribbon by weaving it through them.

  • Hang different digital elements from them like a tag or a charm.

  • Cut them out and apply dimensional foam stickers under them for added dimension.

  • Punch out a round alpha with a round punch.

  • Use one large alpha as a monogram just like those big chipboard alphas you see at the craft store.

  • Spell someone’s name out and make framed art with it.

There are lots of great alphas at Scrapgirls and lots of ways to use them.  As always, the most important thing to remember is to just have fun.

Here’s how I created a title for my layout and warped it to give it perspective.

I created my title in a separate file from my layout.  To determine the size of my new file I needed to determine the width of the book page on Brandy Murrys new Chronicles background paper, which is where I want to place my title.  View>Rulers to turn on your ruler.  I can see that the book page is approximately 7 inches wide.  I then created a new raster, transparent, 7”x1”, 300dpi file.

I dragged each alpha onto the new file and resized them with the pick tool (K) Mode set to scale. To resize them, I simply clicked and dragged a corner of the abounding box that surrounded my alphas inwardly.  If the alpha is too big to see the abounding box that surrounds it, click and drag on the bottom border or bottom corner of your file window to expand the view area.  Then you’ll be able to see the full view of your alphas to resize them accordingly.

Once I had all my alphas aligned the way I wanted them, I applied a drop shadow to each one.

Once they were in place I merged visible and dragged the finished title onto my main layout.

It’s starting to make the layout interesting but the title doesn’t look like it’s lying flat on the curve of the page.  Since I want it to look as real as possible I need to use the Mesh Warp tool on my title to make it conform to the shape of the book curve.

Make sure that Show grid is checked.  Adjust the horizontal and vertical values to show the number of gridlines that you want.  I checked Symmetric and clicked the up or down arrows of the horizontal values until my title was positioned between two horizontal grids.  Checking Symmetric will give you an equal amount of both vertical and horizontal gridlines.  Draft quality determines the quality of work onscreen.  High and medium settings will take longer to adjust.  Low or course will allow you to work faster.  Edge mode has to do with saved deformation maps so we won’t worry about that setting.

Now all I do is click and drag on each of the nodes above and below my title in positions that conform to the shape of the book page just like in the figure above.

Tip: Use the CTRL and SHIFT keys to click and drag a single gridline of nodes.
CTRL key will curve a single gridline and the SHIFT key will move a single gridline either vertically or horizontally.  When using these, make sure to do the same keystrokes on the gridlines both above and below your title to keep it looking proportionately correct.

When happy with your warped image, click the green check on the tool options bar to apply your changes.  That’s all there is too it!  Piece of cake! ;)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
