Life Muses by Ro: Avoiding Digital Scrapbooking Melt Downs: Part 1
(Note: This is the first of a series of articles I am writing on my blog. It is important enough that I thought I had better share it with you.)

Okay, so I'll admit that when you lose your photos and digital scrapbooking supplies because of a hard drive failure or complete computer tank-out, it isn't funny, but I couldn't resist this photo on Flickr by Tigerlemurguy.
I'm going to write a short series of articles about how you can back up your files to prevent disaster. I use all of them. When I was at Novell (a networking software company) we constantly talked about triple-redundancy. This simply means that you are using three different ways of backing up in case one of them fails. I'm going to teach you four ways to back up your digital files.
Nothing is more disastrous to a digital scrapbooker than to lose their memories because they have been sloppy about backing things up. It feels like the world, as we know it, has ended.
Today's topic: Online backup
The main virtue of backing up your files online is that it happens automatically without your interference. I personally use Carbonite. When I worked at Novell, we had a similar piece of software called iFolder. It backed up all of our files, but not our operating system and settings. Every time a change occurred, the change was backed up automatically, seamlessly behind the scenes. If we lost our computer, IS&T would come along with a new computer all set up for us, we would login to iFolder and our files would download to our computer in exactly the same set up (filing structure - you name it) and off we would go. It saved us tons of time. iFolder saved my bacon three different times.
After I left Novell, I longed for iFolder. I felt exposed to the whims of computer failure without it.
When I found Carbonite, I practically did hand flips around my office because it works the same way. Your files are encrypted before they leave your computer. Every time you are connected to the Internet, they automatically back up to a Carbonite server. It happens behind the scenes without your interference. It takes a while to get the initial backup done, but after that you are almost always caught up.
Carbonite recently saved me because I accidentally deleted a folder that had two and a half years of writing in it. (I about passed out when I realized what I’d done.) Then I remembered Carbonite. I just located the folder on my Carbonite drive, chose to restore it, and in about an hour I had it back on my computer again.
Another option is Mozy. Some people prefer Mozy because it backs up hard drives and Carbonite doesn’t have that option yet. I have four internal drives in my computer so Carbonite works great for me. I also use Carbonite for my laptop. (Yes, my computer is bigger than most servers.)
Check it out. I can't recommend this option highly enough because it is almost impossible to keep up with the next three options consistently. You are almost always behind... With an online backup system, you are always backed up.
You'll never have to worry that you are going to lose those precious digital scrapbooking layouts... or your financial records... or your emails... or anything else that you really care about on your computer again.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own
muse to [email protected]. If it is selected
for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have
fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;

*New!* Ro is now spotlighting

her. Subscribe to her blog and

Note from Ro: Answer a survey question and maybe you'll win a portable
hard drive!
Okay blog and Scrap Girls newsletter fans...
I'm going to do a question
survey in my blog and
then draw a name from the people who respond to the question to see
who wins this portable external hard drive. It will be perfect to take
with you when you go to crops, on vacation or even perhaps, the Scrap
Girls Digital Scrap Link Convention in Salt Lake City this October!
(That is, if you hurry up and get one of the remaining slots.) You
can throw your photos and supplies on it you want to use while you
are away from home and then transfer them back onto your bigger computer
or storage media when you come back again. Awesome!
Just enter your reply at the bottom of the blog
post and you'll be
entered into the contest. You must give me your email address (it won't
be visible to blog viewers) so that I can email you should you win.
It would be best if you subscribe to my blog because I will announce
the winner in it, and that will make sure you find out if you are the
winner!

Tutorial: Setting Up a Scrap Girls Blog
Note: Tutorial Created Using Windows XP.
Have you ever wanted to blog but were afraid to start? Why not start one right at Scrap Girls! You can. It can be viewed by anyone, but comments can only be made by registered members of Scrap Girls. Still, it is a fun way to share your thoughts with friends and family. Getting started could not be simpler.
First, login to your Scrap Girls account and go to the message board. At the top of your screen, next to the Gallery link, you will see Blogs. Click on that link.

This link brings you to all of the great blogs here at Scrap Girls. These are fun to peruse at your leisure, but for now, we will continue on with the tutorial. On the far left of the menu bar, you will see the option Create A Blog. (This will only appear if you haven’t already started a blog here at Scrap Girls or if you aren’t already redirecting an existing blog to another URL site.) Click on this link.

The first page will request that you abide by the Scrap Girls Blog Terms and Rules. This box must be checked before the system will allow you to continue.

The next page allows you to name your blog, give it a description and then give you the option to choose a Scrap Girls blog (local blog) or post a link to an external blog. Be sure you have local blog chosen. Click Finish when you are ready to move on.

You will get a message from Scrap Girls that says your blog has been activated.

On the page that follows, you may change the parameters of your blog, if you wish. This includes disabling comments or subscribing to comment notification. Please note that, at this time, you cannot make your blog private, nor can you allow guests to comment on your blogs. You can, however, decide whether you want anyone but Scrap Girl members to view your blog by checking the Allow guests to view your Blog check box. Click Submit if you make any changes to your settings.

From here, you can now click on My Blog at the top of your screen. This will take you to your Blog page. To add an entry to your blog, go to Entries on the right-hand side of your screen. Go down to Add Entry.

The entry page will look much like the page used to post on the message board. Note that you must post a Blog Entry Title or you will get an error message later.

Enter your blog entry.

The blog entry is automatically posted as a draft unless you change that before you publish your post. You will see this option below the text box. Be sure to change it to Published if you are good to go. Click Publish Post when you are ready. (It is acceptable to publish your entry as a draft and then click on the entry later to change it to published.)

Your first blog entry is ready to be seen by your Scrap Girl friends and family. There are many other options to play with from here, but this is where this tutorial ends. Feel free to play with your new blog!

If you wish to link to your Scrap Girls Blog in your signature, you can copy the link at the top of your browser and paste it as a link into your signature.

Have fun blogging!

What's Happening at Scrap
Girls?
You asked for it. You begged for it. You demanded
it. And now, we are pleased to announce that yes, it is finally going
to happen... Scrap Girls is having a digital scrapbooking convention!

Here are the facts:
When: October 9-11th, 2008
- Note: Convention begins at 1:00 pm - Thursday, October 9th and
ends at 6 pm - Saturday, October 11th.
How many people may attend?
- Only 37 openings are still available
(as of 5/13/08). Space is limited and we are selling out fast.
(The seats are already 3/4 taken and we've only had the sign-ups
open for a week!!) If you are thinking about coming, you better
sign up right now. Besides, you better get your airline tickets
before the prices go up. That's a reality. Get crackin'!
- If you happen to miss the sign up, send an email to [email protected] and
we'll put you on a contact list. If someone suddenly can't attend,
we will have them post their opening on the message board, will email
you, and you can work it out with them to take over their spot.
Where: Salt Lake City, Utah
Location: To-die-for historic building called
the "Officer's Club", located at Fort Douglas
UPDATE: Lynda Angelastro and April
Anderton from Digital Scrapbook Magazine have volunteered to come!
They are going to teach a class about how to get published, and they
are bringing goodies for our treat bags!
For more information, or to sign up, please visit our Scrap
Girls Convention page in the Boutique!

It's time for you to stop playing

advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.

Take the world's easiest shortcuts to

-
Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
-
Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap

That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
-
See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
-
Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
-
Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
-
Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
-
And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
