Life Muses by Ro: A Swimming Pool
Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap
Girls has a cool new blog called Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures?
If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. It is full of
neat posts from our design team about their lives (including our world
traveler, Moss). You’ll get to know them a lot better. I just had to show you this post by Brandy Hackman; the conversation between her two sons cracked me up.

As I was coming down the stairs today, I overheard this conversation between my boys. My five-year-old, Kobee, was showing his older brother his little stash of money.
Kobee: I need to save a lot of money to buy a pool.
Braxton: Do you know how much money pools cost? Like 40 hundred dollars.
Kobee: Yeah, I need 40 hundred dollars.
Braxton: Let me count your dollars. Okay, you have 15 dollars.
Kobee: I am saving a lot of dollars.
Braxton: 16, 17, 18, 19, okay I have 20 dollars. Wait a minute… if we add them up we will have like more than 20.
Kobee: Then we can buy a pool!
Braxton: Kobee, we need like 40 thousand.
Kobee: Then we could go to people’s houses and say we need your dollars.
Braxton: No, we can’t steal people’s money.
Kobee: Then how are we going to buy a pool?
Braxton: We have to sell things. Do you want to sell lemonade?
Obviously, our little boys want a swimming pool. It has been a big topic of conversation at our house for the last six months. We have held off putting in our backyard for over a year now, debating the idea. But, in the end, Mom and Dad have decided against the expense.
Since that decision has been made, they have had many conversations about saving their money and giving it to us to help pay for one. It is the sweetest thing to hear them talking about it. Maybe one day we can justify it. Until then, to the community center we go.

- Brandy Hackman

Note from Ro: Would
you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected].
If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll
get to have fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;
engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another
person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have
to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be
the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review:
Papers
Note: This product review written with screenshots
from Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a PC.
When I first saw that my article was going to be about papers, I thought, what can I write about papers, they're beautiful, but just papers. How can I make them exciting? But when I really got to thinking about all the cool stuff you could do with papers, I got quite excited! I am going to share a few earthshaking techniques that I use with papers! Are you ready?
The first thing I want to show you is how to make a custom background using finished papers. Here I used a dark blue textured card stock paper as the base, then I layered a blue paper from the Flowering Flourishes Collection that had some great movement to it. I used the screen blending mode, opacity 100% on this one. Then for the top layer I added a paper from the Shalom Collection that really brought out the green in my photos, on this one I used the multiply blending mode and opacity at 60%. So now I have an awesome background with a lot of interest that complements my photos perfectly.

Ok, so how many of you knew you could fill shapes with patterns using the fill bucket tool? And who knew you could make patterns from papers?! How fun! So here is how you do it. (I used the Layer Your Own Brushes: New Foliage.) Stamp them on your LO, then open a paper that you want to fill the stamp with. With the paper open, go to Edit -> Define Pattern, click OK and close the paper.

Back on your LO, select the fill bucket, at the top you will see a box that says foreground. Then click the arrow and select pattern. The pattern selection box is to the right, click on the arrow and you should see your new pattern that you made from the paper on the bottom of the list. Select it. Now fill your stamp just like you would with paint, only now it will be filled with your paper! How cool is that? Here I have also added a watercolor paper style to my leaves to give it more pop and dimension. I used the same technique on the flower and my word art.

Now the last technique I have used with my papers is a clipping mask, which I think is pretty familiar to most scrappers. I wanted to make a tag for my layout, and I wanted it to look aged. So using the AYO pretty pink tags, I picked a base, and placed a paper from the Scenic Route Collection above it in the layers palette. Making sure the paper was the active layer, I hit Ctrl+G (Cmnd+G Mac), clipping the paper to the shape of my tag base.

So as you can see papers are pretty exciting when you play with all the techniques available with your photo editing software! So go have some fun with papers!

Launa is originally from the foothills of Northern California and now resides in the Deep South where she just recently acquired high speed Internet! It pays to have friends that know how to configure wireless networks when you live in the sticks! Most of her time is spent as a stay at home, as a home schooling mom of her 4 girls and as a secretary to her husband Steven. And every other spare moment? Well, that's spent scrapping of course!

What's Happening at Scrap
Girls?
You asked for it. You begged for it. You demanded
it. And now, we are pleased to announce that yes, it is finally
going to happen... Scrap Girls is having a digital scrapbooking
convention!

Here are the facts:
When: October 9-11th, 2008
- Note: Convention begins at 1:00 pm - Thursday, October 9th and
ends at 6 pm - Saturday, October 11th.
How many people may attend?
- Only 120 openings are available. Space is limited because
we have chosen a location that will allow us to provide a more
intimate experience for you. We want our attendees to get to know
each other and come away with friends for life! But this means
that if you want to attend the convention, you better sign up right
now. (Besides, you better get your airline tickets before the prices
go up. That's a reality. Get crackin'!)
- If you happen to miss the sign up, send an email to [email protected] and
we'll put you on a contact list. If someone suddenly can't attend,
we will have them post their opening on the message board, will
email you, and you can work it out with them to take over their
spot.
Where: Salt Lake City, Utah
Location: To-die-for historic building called
the "Officer's Club", located at Fort Douglas
In the first three days this has
been available, more than HALF of our spots have filled! If you
think you might want to get in on this event, DON'T WAIT! Sign
up now, or you'll miss out in October!
UPDATE: Lynda Angelastro and
April Anderton from Digital Scrapbook Magazine have volunteered to
come! They are going to teach a class about how to get published,
and they are bringing goodies for our treat bags!
For more information, or to sign up, please visit our Scrap
Girls Convention page in the Boutique!

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
