Life Muses by Ro: Help! I
Need Somebody

Help! I need somebody...
Why is it that we are afraid to ask for help? I shot this photo in
the Los Angeles airport. You’d think that with thousands of people
flying in and out of there (particularly since this was the week that
all of those airlines went bankrupt) the help line would be wrapped
around down the hall.
Not at all. Nobody was in it.
I guess everyone knew where they were and what they were doing.
I wish I knew where I am and what I am supposed to be doing. Sometimes – upon
occasion – I believe that I know what I have been placed on this
earth to do. But then I get up the next day and see that my hair is
askew again and I feel overwhelmed with all of the paths I have open
to me. If I am smart, I will stop and ask my little voice for help.
It usually goes something like this...
Ro: Blah. Blah. Blah. Maybe I’ll go back to bed.
Little voice: What are you supposed to do today? Don’t
you have a lot on your plate?
Ro: I dunno.
Little voice: Come on. You are the leader of a company and
the mother of grownup children. You have to know what you are supposed
to do today.
Ro: I have too many options. I don’t know which to pick.
Little voice: You are a grownup woman. Choose something.
Ro: What?
Little voice: That’s what I’m telling you to do.
Pick something to do. That’s your job.
Ro: Give me a clue. Which thing should I do?
Little voice: The best thing, of course.
Ro: Which is the best thing? I have multiple “best things” on
my lengthy list of options. Any of them have possibilities.
Little voice: So, there you go. Just pick something out and
do it.
Ro: What if I pick the wrong one? I might make a mistake.
Little voice: Then stop doing whatever you are doing and do
something else. Big deal. You’re allowed to make mistakes.
Ro: You’re so smart. I’ll do that. Thanks for helping.
Little voice: Of course. Anytime.
I then get in the shower, wash my hair, blow dry it and once that
is done, I feel able to wander into my day. (My ability to think clearly
seems inexplicably connected to the condition of my hair-do. There
has to be something wrong with that, but I’ll leave that topic
for another day.)
My advice to you is this: If you feel confused, stop and engage yourself
in a conversation. Here’s an interesting way to do this if your
mind is racing too fast to control the action internally. Get a notebook
and a pen and then, through writing, ask yourself a question and write
down anything that comes into your head as an answer. Continue the
discussion, writing back and forth to yourself. After awhile, you’ll
realize that you have discovered that you had the answer to your dilemma
all the time.
Yes, you need somebody... you.

Question: Since there
have been so many people wanting to learn about Dynamic Brushes
it will be our first topic! Check out Lori's info below and post
your questions, thoughts, etc. here in this thread. I will see
about a gallery for our "learning" stuff!
To make "dynamic" brushes in PSP... take the PNGs
included in the download and make your PSP brushes. Then View> Palettes> Brush
Variance (F11, I think). In that palette you will
see all of the settings that will make them dynamic. Take those
sliders and crank them up high, especially the color, size
and position/rotation ones. Then look at the bottom and you'll
see something like impressions per step or such (sorry, not
on computer with PSP in it at the moment). This sets how many
images go down with each click.
Once you have this done, play with the brush. With each click,
multiple images, in multiple sizes and colors and rotations go
down, just like with dynamic brushes. To stop this, when you
want to use the brush regularly, simply click the reset arrow
in the Brush Variance Palette down in the lower right. With this
palette, you can make any brush act this way. More info here:
http://www.scrapgirls.com/how_to_use_brushes_in_PSP.htm
Answer 1: Boy, I must have
been in Never-Never Land because I totally missed the last week
of the PSP chat developing. Sarah and I have been talking about
it in email, but I missed the continuation of it on here. I'm
so glad you all got this going. Thank YOU so much Dee, Angela
and Brenda! I am really excited about this and want to do all
I can to help support making this a go! Again, thank you for
hearing our voices!

Response Question 1: It
says “To make dynamic brushes in PSP, take the PNGs included
in the download and make your PSP brushes.” Which PNGs
does this mean? Thanks for putting this together!
Response Answer: You can
use any PNG to create a brush and then make it dynamic in PSP,
including the PNGs that come with the Dynamic Brushes in the
Scrap Girls Boutique.

Response Question 2: What
is jitter?
Response Answer 1: Ok...
how can I word this correctly? A jitter is basically a percent
of randomness for the settings in the Brush Tool Options Bar.
So if you set your size jitter to something like 10, then it
will give you a 10% variance of the size setting that you have
entered in the size of your brush options bar. Does that make
sense?
Response Answer 2: Oh yeah,
I need to add something. For Brush Variance Options like "Blend,"
"Hue," "Saturation" and "Lightness," the
jitter will vary the colors, gradients or patterns that you have
set in your Materials Palette. For Brush Variance Options like "Size," "Rotation"
and "Opacity," the jitter will vary the settings that
you have set in your Tool Options Bar. |

Question: Hi all, you
probably already know this, but I worked it out for myself this
weekend, and just maybe it will help someone else.
We all know what a memory hog PSP is. Also I find that when
I am doing something like adding journaling to a tag or a drop
shadow to an element, sometimes I will end up moving one or
other of the linked items and can't get them back right again.
Trying to get them right, I will click on something else, and
before you know it, I have an Undo chain longer than the Nile
River!
Anyway, this weekend I was struggling a bit and then it hit
me... do the fiddling in another project! If you have the memory
available, then minimize your main project. If memory is tight,
then save it as a PSP file and close it. Open a new one with
your journaling tag, embellishment, whatever you want to work
on in it (keep the same DPI and dimensions to keep the same scale),
do your adjustments, save the changed whatever as a PSP file
and then flatten (merge the layers). Save again in case of accidents,
do a copy, open your main project, paste as a new layer and on
you go. If the embellishment or tag doesn't look right, delete
it, open the PSP file and tinker some more.
Answer 1: I do this a lot,
saving as a PNG to add to the layout! Thanks for posting the
tip for everyone.
Answer 2: I've done that
in PSE as well when working on a complicated grouping. It can
really save headaches! Another good reason to love digital scrapbooking,
a.k.a. “The Dark Side.”
Answer 3: I like this idea.
Thanks! When you merge your layers, make sure you choose the “merge
visible” instead of “merge all” (flatten)
option. The flatten option will put a white background behind
your embellishment. |

Question: OK, so I am
really new at this, as I have said before. I am working on a
project and here is what I want to do (if it makes any sense).
I have a picture of a friend of mine. What I want to do is to
take the background completely out and have only her and have
it as a PNG file. I have tried to Google this, but I can’t
seem to figure it out! Can anyone help?
Answer: To do this, you'll
have to make a selection of just the part you want to make
into a PNG file. First of all, make a copy of your photo and
close the original. Then, the best way to do this is with the
Lasso Tool (Freehand Selection Tool). You'll have to set the
tool options to either "Edge Seeker," "Smart
Edge," "Point to Point" or "Freehand." "Edge
Seeker" and "Smart Edge" are probably your best
bets. Zoom in real close so you can really see what you are
doing. When you have her all selected, copy the selection and
paste as a new object.
You'll probably have to go in with another round of selection
to get parts you've missed and/or use a very soft brush and erase
all the unwanted pixels. Your image will be a .pspimage at this
point, so you need to save it as a PNG file. This will preserve
the transparent background. This assumes you are using PSP X
or above.
This can be a tricky operation, but just take your time and
you'll be fine. Experiment and enjoy the process. If any other
PSP users have any tips on how to do this or an easier way, I'm
sure they'll be along soon to respond.
Response: Thanks for the
fast response! I was using the Background Eraser Tool and was
not getting good results. I didn’t think to use the Lasso.
I am experimenting with it now. I have the new X2. I feel so
stupid, but I am brand new to PSP and scrapbooking in general,
so this is going to be a long process for me. Please bear with
me!
Response Answer: When I
use the Background Eraser, I have to zoom in real close. Then,
when you use the tool, you have to have the majority of the colors
you want erased in the circle. Only leaving just the edge of
what you want to remain on the side. Does that make sense? I
use it a lot and once I got the hang of letting it know what
I wanted my edge to be, it’s very easy! Of course, if the
colors are very similar, you have to change your tolerance. |

New
Class Offering!

Online
Class - Dynamic Fab 20: Stitching
May 15, 22, 29 and June 5 - 4:00PM ET

What's Happening at Scrap
Girls?
You asked for it. You begged for it. You demanded
it. And now, we are pleased to announce that yes, it is finally going
to happen... Scrap Girls is having a digital scrapbooking convention!

Here are the facts:
When: October 9-11th, 2008
- Note: Convention begins at 1:00 pm - Thursday, October 9th and
ends at 6 pm - Saturday, October 11th.
How many people may attend?
- Only 120 openings are available. Space is limited because
we have chosen a location that will allow us to provide a more intimate
experience for you. We want our attendees to get to know each other
and come away with friends for life! But this means that if you want
to attend the convention, you better sign up right now. (Besides,
you better get your airline tickets before the prices go up. That's
a reality. Get crackin'!)
- If you happen to miss the sign up, send an email to [email protected] and
we'll put you on a contact list. If someone suddenly can't attend,
we will have them post their opening on the message board, will email
you, and you can work it out with them to take over their spot.
Where: Salt Lake City, Utah
Location: To-die-for historic building called
the "Officer's Club", located at Fort Douglas
In the first three days this has been
available, more than HALF of our spots have filled! If you think
you might want to get in on this event, DON'T WAIT! Sign
up now, or you'll miss out in October!
UPDATE: Lynda Angelastro and April
Anderton from Digital Scrapbook Magazine have volunteered to come!
They are going to teach a class about how to get published, and they
are bringing goodies for our treat bags!

Girls Convention page in the Boutique!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
