Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make my title into a sticker, I merged my title elements into one
layer and then created a new raster layer under the title elements.
With the title layer active, click Selections> Select All,
then Selections> Float. Now click Selections> Modify> Expand and
enter in a value of 15. Click "OK." Turn visibility
to the title layer off and activate the blank raster layer beneath
the title layer. Click the Flood Fill Tool and fill the area inside
the marching ants with white. Turn visibility back on for the title

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get a “bubbled” look to the tops of the paperclip
templates, I duplicated the insert layer and turned the visibility
off. I clipped my paper to, and then merged with the insert
layer. Then I added a text layer, rotating the letter as needed.
Next, I simplified the text and merged the text with the paper-covered
base. Then I turned the visibility back on and applied one of Cheryl
Barber’s Clear
Glass Styles. After I found one I liked, I simplified that layer
and merged again, leaving me with one element.

A Designer's Life: Erica
Hite
Where Is My Mind?
Is there such a thing as pregnancy brain? Are pregnancy hormones strong
enough to throw a usually organized mind out of whack? I don't know
if this is something other new moms-to-be are dealing with as well,
but this is something new that I've been struggling to get used to
for months now. I have to make sure I keep my little planner with me
most of the time because if I don't write down appointments or things
I need to remember to do, then poof, it's completely gone from my mind
and I'm on to thinking about other things. Or, I’m not thinking
at all.
With the growing number of doctor appointments, last minute baby classes
to squeeze in, joining various mommy groups, running to stores to pick
up last minute items I need to be (or feel) prepared for my baby's
birth, books to read... wait, what point was I trying to make? Oh,
well. What I'm trying to say is, boy, there sure is a lot to do to
prepare for parenthood.
I've been sitting down at the computer with my leftover hour or so
of time on some days and desiring to design something, but I can see
out of the corner of my eye the stacks of dishes that need to be put
away and the floors that need to be scrubbed in the kitchen. These
visuals trigger other reminders, such as the bathroom floors needing
to be cleaned and the toilets to be scrubbed, laundry has to be done
and put away, food needs to be bought and stocked up on, all before
the baby is born and before my mom arrives to help out.
As I move closer and closer to motherhood, I see how amazing other
moms are. I'm in awe at how organized they can be and how they juggle
raising children with getting everything else that needs to be done.
I know there's only so much one can do to be prepared to be a parent.
There are only so many books you can read and only so many tips you
can get from other parents. I'm sure most of it will be about learning
as we go along. But, I can already tell it's going to be quite the
adventure and challenge to balance parenting with life and with work.
It really is a leap into the unknown.
I remember early on when I learned I was expecting that I knew if
it wasn't for being a designer at Scrap Girls, I might not have taken
the leap at parenthood that I have recently. Working at an 8-5:30 job
(and more) left me for many years thinking that I could never partake
in parenthood. It never seemed like an option to me. I knew that if
I was to have children that I would want to be home to raise them.
But, working such long hours at a job away from home was the only option
I thought I had.
I mentioned in jest not that long ago that I owe this baby to Scrap
Girls and to Ro and Valerie for taking me on as a designer two and
a half years ago. But really, it wasn't in jest. The statement was
quite true. Scrap Girls is such an amazing company that allows mothers
to be at home with their children and to work on their own time and
design products. I feel truly blessed that I am able to design things
that come from my heart and that others might want to enjoy using.
I can't tell you how grateful I am every day to be on the Scrap Girls
team.
I'm writing this Designer's Life a month before it will be in the
newsletter and I can't foresee where I'll be in my pregnancy when you
read this. I might have had my baby already as my due date is May 3rd.
Or, he might still need a little more time to make his entrance into
this world. But, I can tell you that as soon as I'm up and about again
after his birth, here I will be again, at the computer, probably with
my little man snoozing in a sling on my chest, designing products here
and there or reading the newsletter along with you and just being grateful
for these beautiful moments in life that I'm experiencing for the first
time.
- Erica

Favorite product I've designed:
Dear
Diary Collection Biggie

I designed this product when I wanted a kit to help me create some
visualization boards about some goals or wishes I had in my life. This
kit reminds me that I need to look at my life again and journal about
my current experiences and about dreams I still have.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors
and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because
the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the
products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you
would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial
club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways
to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of
ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!
April’s Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Erica Hite
and Sarah Batdorf. Their club is full of fun products that can help
you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer
and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:
- Make friend pages with the Brush Set: Fabricated word art.
- The floral paper templates in the ScrapSimple Paper Templates:
Family Room can be used for spring layouts.
- Use the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Branch to show
a trip to the orchard.
- Or, you can use them to showcase a picnic that happened under your
family's favorite tree!
- The Brush Set: Fabricated that says "Welcome to the
Family"
could be used for a prospective groom, new baby, adopted child, new
in-laws, or even pets!
- Heritage layouts would look wonderful with all of the products
in this ScrapSimple Club!

Embellishment ideas:
- Use the hinges and frames from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates:
Archived to create a series of frames hinged together. If
they're hinged slightly off-kilter, it can add to their charm!
- Use the hinges from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived on
a two-page layout spread to connect the two pages. This will give
the feel when the pages are printed out that they are connected.
- Showcase objects or people by placing them on the branches
of the tree from the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Branch.
- Use the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Word Panels - Curves as
funky bookplates, or punch a hole in the narrow end and use them
as tags.
- Use the frames from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived to
make a gallery like you would see on a living room wall.
- Add in some of Mandy's Home
Life Embellishments to hang the frames from ScrapSimple
Embellishment Templates: Archived.

Card and Printable ideas:
- The ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Word Panels - Curves would
make excellent frames for word art. Print out a bunch of fun
verses and attach them to magnets for the fridge. Or,
punch a hole in the corner and tie them together with a pretty ribbon
to toss in your purse for a pick-me-up during the day.
- You could use the ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Word Panels
- Curves as printables and label your storage boxes with them.
For instance, you could label photo boxes, filing
cabinets, scrapbook supplies, etc.

Mini Tutorial: Using the Texturizer in Photoshop
I challenged myself to create a layout using only products from this
month’s ScrapSimple Monthly Club offering. I filled each layer
of paper, the label and the frames with colours (Enhance> Adjust
Colour> Adjust Hue/Saturation) that coordinated
with my photo. I used the Magic Wand Tool and with Contiguous unchecked
I selected the leaves, recoloured them; then selected the trunk/branches
and recoloured them.

Once I had the tree filled with colour, I added texture to add depth
to the image. In the image above, the leaves have already had texture
added, and now I will add texture to the trunk/branches.

I added texture by choosing Filter> Texture> Texturizer and
then scrolling through the default textures until I found one I liked.
I was then able to adjust the size and depth of the texture.

you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |
