Customer Muse: The Sound of Pavement

I remember spring from my childhood as that time of year when we could switch from leotards to knee socks and shed those old winter boots for our spring Sunday shoes. The air smelled so clean and fresh. The sun shone bright on the waning snow and new grass. Even our coats might be left at home in favor of a white sweater. But, the memory that comes back to me year after year is the sound of the pavement.

That first time that we wore shoes to church, we would hear the click of our shoes on the pavement as we crossed the parking lot onto the dry sidewalk in front of the main door of the church. Click, click, click. It would echo through the neighborhood as sound can only do once the ground is free from snow and the sun is shining.

Don’t ask me why, but the sound is different on a cloudy day. It is different on a wet or snowy day. In the spring, when the snow is almost gone and the sun shines clear and warm, those shoes make a very distinctive sound on the pavement. It is a sound I have always loved and was often mingled with the scent of lilac from the bush that grew in the corner of our church parking lot.

Last Sunday, I heard that beloved sound. Click, click, click. We still have a good mound of snow and the only grass I’ve seen yet this year is the patch that has been hiding under our trampoline all winter. Yet, with spring coming a full month early, we have had enough melting already that the pavement is dry enough to get away with not wearing boots. We do still cross snow in the parking lot. But, I am anxious enough to shed those boots and switch to shoes a little early and cross carefully. I have not gone anywhere else without boots, but to church I can be fairly certain that I can navigate from car to front door without getting snow in my shoes.

We also haven’t switched to sweaters yet, still needing a coat, albeit a lighter one, to keep warm. And, if the truth were known, I generally have a sweater under that coat to keep me warm once inside.

But, last week as I came up off the snow onto the clear pavement in front of the church and heard that click, click, click of my shoes, a smile crept onto my face. A smile that will only grow bigger as the snow mounds grow smaller.

Today, I don’t even mind the rain because I know that rain will wash away more snow. Could spring be here already? It’s only the first half of March! Having lived in this northern climate long enough to know better, I am not ready to concede that spring is here just yet. But, I will happily enjoy this spring-like weather as long as it lasts. And, deep in my heart, I will hope that we have seen the last of winter...

- Heather Penner

What Customers Are Saying...

I was so surprised to discover that my layout was in today’s newsletter! I logged on to check my e-mail this morning and, in usual order, I opened messages from friends and family first and then I saw that I had a message from a Scrap Girl. I don’t often get personal messages and I have been so busy this week that I haven’t posted anything new for awhile. So, I checked that next. The message was from a fellow Arizonian telling me how much she liked my layout in the newsletter. “What? My layout in the newsletter!” So, that was the next e-mail I opened.

I created the “Spring Training” layout for the monthly challenge; use photos that show action. I remember when I finished it I was pleased with it, but when I looked at the gallery, I knew that there were so many more wonderful layouts that I wasn’t expecting mine would be chosen. Well, I didn’t win the monthly layout contest, but I am so grateful that mine was chosen for one of the weekly winners. I love Scrap Girls! Thanks so much for all of the positive feedback you and all of the Scrap Girls give me!

Thank you so much for the 4X6 layouts and other products. I have bought and “collected” many Scrap Girls products over the past two years. However, I haven’t used as many as I should. I am a scientist by trade and now a college professor. I tell my students to “do your best” and then ignore my own advice!

I have very little artistic talent. I thought organic chemistry should have been an art elective in college: you have to draw all of those chemical forms! It should have counted. The college did not agree. I have always been self-conscious about my layouts and my rigid “everything must line up” ways. I am also not the best at color picking and matching.

However, I have scrapped the past few nights and I have used the 4X6 products. I’m in love. I have a dinner for my alma mater’s chemistry department next Saturday. I am looking forward to showing up with multiple layouts of my son and husband to show my college friends what my life has developed into. And, they will all be 4X6.

So, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I am now using some of those “hoarded” products and enjoying myself immensely. And, without as much “extra” space to fill, I don’t feel as though my lack of artistic talent is showing through. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I want to tell you all how much I enjoy your work! This is what I like:

I love the daily newsletter with all of the ideas and hints. I really look forward to checking my e-mail every day. I feel a little sorry for myself on Sundays, but I guess everyone is entitled to a day off.

I love your website. Every now and then I look at other websites, but I don't find much inspiration there. Those websites don't seem complete and definitely not as good. I'm always asking myself why I bothered looking at a different website! The Scrap Girls site has all I need.

I love the daily freebie and I like the way you put it at the end of the newsletter as a little surprise. Thanks.

I love the University with all the lessons and clear instructions. It is very helpful to me as I learn what PSE6 can do.

I love my Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed and More. I hate to admit that I have to watch some of them four or five times, but that's perfect for a slow learner like me.

I love your kits with all of the papers and embellishments. It is so much fun to put it all together to show off my pictures. (I've never been inspired to buy anything from any of those other websites.)

I love your whimsical sales. You don't get 18% off... you get 18.3%. They always make me smile. And then, I smile again when I see the discount applied to my purchases.

I love the Scrap Girls Monthly Club... and today was the 1st of April! Nice surprise... I'd forgotten the date. I can hardly wait to start downloading.

I love the muses, too. I feel as if you are my friends.

And, I love Angie. She seems to be sitting there waiting for my questions! She gives me fast and clear answers to my problems and I really appreciate her help.

So, thanks very much to all of you! I'm having fun!

Ro, I doubt you remember me, but about a year and a half ago, I set out to learn Dreamweaver with the hope of working for you so that I could stay home with my son. He had been diagnosed with some problems and felt he needed me home. Inadvertently, you gave me the push to be my own CEO and start my own small business. Thank you. I am now home, running my small photography business... staying home with my son, who has zero difficulties now. He needed a little stability through me to work through his issues. Praise God, I was able to provide that.

In starting my new endeavor, I hadn’t found a branding I liked. I browsed Scrap Girls often, hoping something would jump out at me, and low and behold, those little chickies and that mod tree I purchased stuck with me. I searched for commercial usage and squealed when I saw you offered it. Thank you.

Post your layout sharing something silly by midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls boutique!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.
