Life Muses by Ro: Pretty
Tough
I caught him going downstairs. I can hear the vacuum turning off and
on. He is supposed to be sitting on the couch with his foot up on a
pillow, an ice pack under it. But, he won’t behave.
Gary had foot surgery last Tuesday to remove a bone spur that had
been causing him a great deal of pain. Ever the tough guy, he imagined
that he could sail down to the hospital by himself, have the surgery
and then drive himself home.
“You won’t be able to drive, dear,” I told him.
“I will, too. It’s no big deal. It’s out-surgery.”
“It is a big deal, honey. This is surgery. You are going to
have anesthetic. I need to drive you there and drive you home.”
“No, it’s okay. I’ll manage. You need to work.”
I shook my head. “I’ll drive you. I can miss a few hours
of work.”
He shrugged. “Okay, then… You can drive me home. I’ll
drive there and call you when I’m through and you can pick me
up.”
Trying not to sound frustrated, I asked, “What would we do with
the extra car?”
That stumped him for a minute. “I can have one of the kids go
down and pick it up later.”
“Who would drive this child over to get the car so they can
bring it home?”
The logic of that argument got him and he agreed to let me take him
to surgery and bring him home again.
The morning of the surgery, he got up and tried not to seem nervous.
“Are you okay?” I asked him, knowing I had asked a stupid
question. Of course he wasn’t okay. He was going to have foot
surgery.
“No problem,” he replied.
“The worst part is getting the anesthesia out of your system
once it is over, but that doesn’t last too long,” I advised.
(I’ve had nine major surgeries and too many out surgeries to
count them so I have a little experience on the topic.)
“It won’t be a problem,” he answered. “I had
a colon test last year and that wasn’t a big deal.”
“This is different. You’re having surgery, not a test.”
I could see that he didn’t understand me so I decided to leave
it alone. I would commiserate with him when it became necessary to
do so.
He got in his gown, submitted to the IV insertion and waited for them
to take him away. After he left, I went to the waiting room to discover
that the friendly folks who work there had left some sweet rolls and
juice for family members. I was agreeable and ate a roll with apple
filling and drank some cranberry juice.
After a bit, the doctor came out and told me that everything went
well, describing in more detail than I cared to hear what he had done
to accomplish the surgery. “Ewww,” I thought. “I
think I’m glad that I’ve missed this part with all of the
surgeries I’ve had. Poor Gary. He’s had to listen to all
of this gore over the years.”
Presently, a nurse told me that Gary was ready to take home. We got
him dressed, put him in a wheelchair and before we knew it, he was
home resting.
“How does your foot feel?”
“No problem,” he said. “No pain at all.”
“The pain medications haven’t worn off yet,” I advised. “I’m
going to go fill your prescription.”
He wasn’t convinced that he needed pain medication, but allowed
me to retrieve it anyway.
When I returned, I found him bent over the white throne in the bathroom.
When he could breathe again, I asked my stupid question again, “Are
you okay?”
“I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I suddenly felt
sick,” he moaned.
“Ahhh,” I said seriously. “The anesthesia is working
its way out of you. Hold on. It will take a few hours but the nausea
will go away.”
He nodded his head, hobbled back to the bed and collapsed. Knowing
that I couldn’t do anything for him but check on him occasionally,
I went across the hall to my office.
Occasionally, I stuck my head in the bedroom and asked, “How’s
the pain?”
“No problem at all,” he replied confidently each time.
“Well, if it starts to hurt, your medication is here.”
I slept in the spare room that night, knowing that the last thing
he needed was to deal with another person. When I got up the next morning
to check on him, I found him grunting, frustrated. “Are you okay?” I
asked, sorry that all I could come up with was that dumb question again.
“My foot started to really hurt in the night,” he winced. “I
had to get up and take pain medication. If I had to rate it between
one and ten, it would be an eight or nine.”
“When did you take medication last?”
“About twenty minutes ago,”
I nodded in sympathy, “It will start to work in a few minutes.”
And so it goes… a struggle between his manly desire to overcome
the odds and not admit his pain and the necessity to bend to the requirements
to care for the pain as he heals. I’ve been unsuccessful in my
desire to keep him sitting down. I remind him constantly to put his
foot up. I bring him ice packs and food. And yet, every time I turn
my back, I find him wandering around the house, going up and down stairs,
and hear him turning on the vacuum.
Gary really doesn’t know how to milk a good situation. If he would
allow it, I’d bring him ice cream and cookies, steak and potatoes,
and kiss his poor head. Instead, I guess I’ll just have to admire
him for being the strong man that he is.

Tutorial: Making a 4x6 Photo
Album
Note: Tutorial Created Using Photoshop
CS3 on a Mac OS X.
With all of these great new 4x6 products in the boutique, I’ve
been really interested in creating a 4x6 album. I especially want to
create one where my photos will be the focus.

To do this, I select the photos I want to use. I then use the Brush
Set - 4x6: Fancy Frames and brush grayish-purple frames onto my photos
and then print them.

Next, I select grayish-purple cardstock to match and cut the pieces
to 4”x7”.

I then use a glue-stick to adhere my photos to the cardstock pages.
I make sure the photos are flush to the outside of each page, leaving
a 1” margin empty on each page. This empty 1” margin will
be used to bind my album.

Finally, I use the Brush Set - 4x6: Fancy Words to print a frame onto
a 4x7 piece of vellum. This becomes an overlay for my cover. I bind
the album by punching two holes and setting with eyelets. Here is a
peak inside my finished album.

This is the first time I’ve made a book like this, but I could
see using this simple format a lot and incorporating even more 4x6
Scrap Girls digital scrapbooking products into the mix. It makes a
great simple little gift for someone that you’ve taken a few
photos of - perhaps the birth of a new baby, a wedding, prom, birthday
parties, mother’s day, father’s day, etc.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
