Life Muses by Ro: A Couch
of Cherries
Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap
Girls has a cool new blog called Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures?
If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. It is full of
neat posts from our design team about their lives (including our world
traveler, Moss). You’ll get to know them a lot better. I just
had to show you this post by Amanda McGee. She has almost (almost – not
really – but almost) inspired me to dust off my sewing machine.
Nah... but almost...

I love my couch! How can you not be happy on a comfy couch that is
covered in cheerful checks and cherries? It didn’t start out
this way, so first I will tell you the story.
This was the first piece
of "real" furniture I bought for
our first home (meaning, not at a garage sale!) It came with a lovely,
lavender, flowered slipcover and it served us well for many years.
Its place of residence was in our front room where it was flooded with
southern light. It made a cozy place for a nap with sleeping babes,
a soft place for tickle time, a landing pad for leaps and jumps, a
seat for theatrical debuts and dance performances, a comfy place for
story time, and a peaceful place for contemplating life’s ups
and downs. I truly have loved this couch. Upon arrival at our new home,
it has taken a few temporary places to rest, but has finally found
itself at home in our sun room. But, alas, the old, lavender frock
just didn’t fit in. The flowers had been replaced with a simple,
off-white, canvas slipcover. Yawn. Boring!
One chilly winter weekend,
I found myself procrastinating. I should have been working on a different
project, but was sorting through my bins of fabrics instead. That couch
needed a makeover! I'll let you in on a little secret about myself.
I like to sew and I'm a bit of a collector of fabrics. (I prefer that
term over hoarder and pack rat!) I've kept things from the old house
in case I want to use them again and I'm happy to have put them to
use. I cut apart some red check curtains, a cherry tablecloth, some
dish towels (that were a gift and looked just too nice to use!) a placemat
and my daughter’s cherry print
dress! I made some bias binding and stitched the parts together to
give my couch a new life! As I was sewing the pillow covers, I kept
thinking how much it looks like my Cherry
Pie digital scrapbooking collection. Is this life imitating
art?
I love how it turned out. It makes me think I should procrastinate
more often! It has found a new home, with a new outfit, and ready for
new adventures as a place where I fold laundry, read books and look
at magazines, share story time, watch my children make crafts and play
with play dough. It is the perfect spot for viewing backyard adventures
and watching the sun set. Welcome home, my cheerful friend!

- Amanda McGee

you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected].

Way Cool Stuff Product Review:
Brushes
Note: This product review written with screenshots
from Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0.
Brushes are versatile tools and a must have in every digi-scrapper’s
arsenal of supplies. They can be used in many ways, more than the usual
stamping and distressing. One example I’ll show is how to create
a cut-out effect using brushes. Before that, here is just a brief explanation
of what inspired this layout.
Love is a battlefield - go get some scars.
I saw this quote written on a wall, of all places, and I thought, isn’t
that a wonderful modern version of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s 17th
century quote on love?
I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
I wanted to give this layout a modern feel to it and Diane Miller’s
Tats Tribal Brush Set immediately came to mind. Here is my initial
layout without the brushes. I used Amanda Sok’s Orange Textured
Cardstock Paper and a torn heart from Valerie Randall’s Digital
Stickers: Love Stinks. The alphas are from Valerie Randall’s Hula
Collection and Mandy Steward’s Urban Gazette Collection.
The torn photo was created using Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple
Tools PaperTear PSE Actions. I also used photo corners from Dinny
Miller’s Cozy
Collection.

To create the cut-outs, I first turn off the layer visibility of the
orange paper and create a layer below it. The Layers Palette looks
like this:

Then, using the Gradient Tool, I apply a gradient to this new layer
with these settings: Color Harmonies 1, Blue -Violet, Yellow-Orange,
Radial. To apply the gradient, drag the mouse over the area where you
want the gradient layer to show through. In my case, it is in the lower
right-hand corner. Experiment to see which settings are best for your
layout. The workspace now looks like this:

At this point, I turn the orange background paper visibility back
on and make it active on the Layers Palette. Then, using the Eraser
Tool loaded with Dinny Miller’s Tats Tribal Brush #4,
I erase portions of the paper in a flowing hair pattern. (Eraser size
1225 px, opacity 85%.) As you can see, the erased areas will show the
gradient layer beneath the paper.

To give the cut-outs depth, I apply a drop shadow on the orange paper
layer with these settings: Drop Shadow: low, size 20px, distance 20px,
opacity 75%, medium gray. I also apply an Inner Glow: size 9px, opacity
75%, white. Again, play around with the settings to see what best suits
your layout.
I also stamp Amanda Sok’s Art Deco Stitching Brush
Set-Angular as a top border. I then apply a gradient to the brush,
making sure that the pixels are locked to prevent the gradient from
being applied to the entire layout.

As a last step, I stamp a frame brush from Erica Hite’s Henna
Frames Brush Set and add a few more of Dinny’s Tats Tribal
Brushes.
This is the final result:

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook

to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
