I don't know when they are going to let me get away with this kind of
sale again. Almost everything in the Scrap
Girls Boutique is 21.9% off! But you know how it goes, I do have
to turn it off soon, so here’s your warning: It
will be over at Midnight, MDT, April 30th. THAT'S TODAY!

Shhh! This is Valerie. Don't tell Ro, but I have hijacked
the newsletter to bring you an EXTRA discount!
Ro thinks she can just give you a big sale against
my advice, does she? Well, I'll show her! We'll see how she likes
THIS sale! You can get an EXTRA 5% off
the sale prices in the boutique! That means you will get 26.9% off
almost everything in the boutique with this coupon!
To recieve the discount, you must type the coupon code
in exactly as you see it here: BwaHaHaRo.
Not BWAHAHARO, Bwa_Ha_Ha_Ro, or any other variations. BwaHaHaRo is
the only code that will work.
You must hurry though, this
coupon will end, along with our regular sale, at Midnight (MST),
on April 30th, 2008. THAT'S TODAY!

Life Muses by Ro: You are Living Your Big Life

One of the challenges of writing a regular column such as this is
that a great deal of the time, you feel that nothing particularly interesting
or inspiring happens to you. You get up, shower and dress, eat the
same breakfast that you’ve eaten for weeks, do the same work,
talk to the same people, go to the same places, watch the same TV shows,
and go to bed at the same time each evening.
Nothing has especially
inspired you. Nothing has moved you to think differently or act in
a unique way. When you look back, you can’t
particularly remember what has occurred. Life feels a waft in sameness...
ordinary, blank-minded sameness.
But then, without warning, your mind
grasps the idea that your big life is found between the covers of small
days. While your life may appear to be connected through major milestones
such as births, deaths, marriage, graduation, moves to new cities,
and radical changes in employment, those events are simply markers
placed along the path so that you might know where you are on the journey.
The
journey itself – life – is found in the moving through
one simple activity - at a time. Each time you stand in a line, make
a meal, take out the trash, put clean clothes in your closet, read
a book, chat with friends, laugh with a family member, comb your hair
or even engage in your favorite hobby, try to remember that you are
living your big life at that very moment. And, the very moment you
remember that you are living your big life, you’ll feel inspired.
This
is your life. Isn’t it interesting?
- Ro
P.S. I took this photo of a stand of ornamental grass last fall.
I feel inspired every time I look at it. It was so simple that I nearly
missed it, but then I saw the light hitting it and I realized that
it is how we see the details of our life that matter.

Tutorial: Demystifying RAW
Conversion
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop
CS3 on a PC.
Photography is a huge part of digital scrapbooking and most of us
aren’t professional photographers. If your camera offers RAW
format, you might wonder whether you can handle shooting your images
in this way. You know that you’ll get much larger files and that
you are supposed to have greater control over the end product. But,
what exactly does that look like? Maybe you’ve seen the RAW conversion
dialogue and it looked way too scary.
I’d like to show you some
basic steps on improving your photos through the use of the RAW conversion
system. This won’t be a comprehensive lesson on the wonders of
RAW, but, hopefully, it will get you started and perhaps give you the
impetus to continue on down that road.

You may know that there are certain
things you can do within Photoshop that will improve your photos. However,
there is a limit to how much you can fix them there. For example, here
is the photo I want to work on, along with an example of the photo
I have fixed within Photoshop’s
regular interface. There is a nice improvement, but I’d like
to show how much better the final result will be when the conversion
is done using the RAW Conversion Box.
Open an image from the Adobe Bridge.
You’ll want to left-click
on the image and choose “Open in Camera Raw.” You’ll
need to be sure that the image you choose has been taken in RAW format.
You can make sure of this by checking the extension of the file against
the RAW extension your camera offers. Check your camera's manual for
this information. (If you have CS3, you can open JPG images in RAW
from the Adobe Bridge. Simply right-click on your image and choose
"Open in Camera Raw". Not all of the features are available for JPG
images, but there are enough there to play with!)

Take a look at the RAW dialogue box. The first thing
that you’ll
notice is a large collection of sliders and buttons on the right side
of the screen. Don’t be alarmed! They are your friends!
We will
start with the top of the slider panel. The Photoshop team knew what
they were doing when they organized this list. Each slider is placed
in the order that you should use them, for the most part. Although,
sometimes, you may want to vary from this path.

We’ll begin with
White Balance. White Balance allows you to change the
appearance of the lighting in which you took the photo originally.
In this case, I took the photo in the shade. Shade tends to give a
bluish cast to a photo, and we want more natural colors to be present
in the image. If I click on the arrow at the right of the White
Balance display,
I get a drop-down box which gives me some presets for typical lighting
situations. So, if I took the photo in shade, I may want to try the
"Shade" setting first.

Having tried the "Shade" setting, I like the results.

However, I think
it’s a bit redder than I want it to be. Next,
I’ll go to the Temperature slider and adjust it slightly
to the left to tone down the reds just a bit. You can see that the
image is a bit less red because I adjusted the Temperature from
its original 7500 down to 7250. I like the look of this better.

I also adjust the
Tint slider back to zero. This adds a bit of the green back
into the image and tones down the magentas.

The next slider is where
we will see the most dramatic difference. The Exposure slider
will allow us to essentially increase or decrease the exposure as necessary.
Unless you’re an amazing photographer
with very high quality equipment, you may find it a bit tricky getting
the exposure just right. In that case, when you shoot your images in
RAW, you can adjust for this according to your tastes. My image is
too dark, so I’m going to move the slider to the right to brighten
things up.

You can see that the image is much brighter, but some of
the detail seems to be lost. I want my image to be a bit dramatic,
so I’ll
use the Blacks slider to help me accomplish this. I increase
the Blacks to "15" to get the look I want. This brings out the
details in my image quite a bit.

However, I still want to boost the
Contrast a bit more, so I increase the Contrast to "50".

Finally,
I want to bring out the details in the veil. I’m going
to do this by using the Clarity slider. I increase the Clarity value
to "53" and achieve some more definition in the veil.

Here is the final
result: A beautiful image very clearly defined and beautifully exposed.
Now, we just need to showcase it in a layout!

Again, compare what can
be achieved in RAW with what can be done inside Photoshop’s typical
interface.
You may notice that we haven’t used all of the sliders
inside Photoshop. Since each image is different, it requires the
use of different adjustments. I recommend playing with the sliders
to get the feel of what each one does.

It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
