Digital Scrapbooking News

I just have to do it. I have to run a sale and spoil you a little bit during Mischief Week. And so - even though we just barely had a sale and I knew Valerie might get annoyed with me - I decided to ignore her advice... Because it is Mischief Week and I have to do some mischief.

I decided that not only would I run a sale, I would run the biggest sale we have had so far this year. (Neener, neener, neeeeeener...! Put that in your hat and run around the block with it, Valerie!)

So hop right on it. I don't know when they are going to let me get away with this kind of sale again. Almost everything in the Scrap Girls Boutique is 21.9% off! But you know how it goes, I do have to turn it off soon, so here’s your warning: It will be over at Midnight, MDT, April 30th.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to give my word art on my layout a grunge effect. To do that, I stamped Keri’s Inspired Brush Set onto a new layer. I then switched to the Eraser Tool and selected one of Brandie Valenzuela’s Grungelle Brushes, adjusted the size and then stamped it a few times on my word art layer. This gave me just the right amount of grunge effect that I was going for.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to use the photo cluster in one of the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates - Layered: Frame It! Edgy 2, but the orientation of the main frame was landscape, and I needed it to be portrait. To change the orientation, I rotated the canvas 90 degrees clockwise and then dragged the photo cluster frames onto my canvas, positioning it where I wanted it.

A Designer's Life: Kerry Veale

Some of My Favorite Things

As designers at Scrap Girls, we are occasionally asked to write an essay about ourselves for the newsletter. It feels a bit uncomfortable to me, as I think it is more interesting to learn about other people, than to talk about myself. (That's one reason I love talking to you on the Scrap Girls message boards!) So, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite things; perhaps they will give you a little glimpse of me.

Favorite Color: Dutch blue

Favorite Flowers: Hydrangeas and roses. I love the David Austin English roses which have been bred from the old-fashioned garden roses and modern tea roses, and combine the best form, fragrance and repeat blooming from each. And, of course, raindrops on roses.

Favorite Sounds: My family laughing together, the grandfather clock with its Westminster chimes, birds chirping in the spring, the garage door opening when my husband returns home late at night from a long day's work, my son's voice on the answering machine singing happy birthday to me, my daughter singing in her sweet, clear soprano.

Favorite Music: Bach, Vivaldi, Andrea Bocelli, Bonnie Rait, The Cars, Beau Soleil. I still occasionally enjoy some of the bands that were popular when I was a teenager, like the Eagles, James Taylor, the Carpenters, Cat Stevens, the soundtrack from the Sound of Music. And, I have loved hymns my entire life.

Favorite Beverage on Cold Days: Stash Chai Spice tea sweetened with stevia, with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

Favorite Movies: Any Jane Austen movie, any Anne of Green Gables movie, Vanity Fair, the Sound of Music, Miss Potter, Marie Antoinette. If it has period clothing, old houses and expansive fields of green, then I love it!

Favorite Sound of Music Memory: In my teens, when left at home alone, I would walk over to the large cabinet stereo in our lime-green carpeted living room, slide the Sound of Music LP out of its worn cardboard cover, place it on the turn table and then sing along with all of the volume a skinny, little girl with a "choir voice" could muster. My favorite song at the time was, "I Have Confidence," perhaps because I didn't have much at the time. But, I felt invincible as I sang along with Julie Andrews!

Favorite Social Place Available 24/7: The Scrap Girls message board.

Favorite Textures (real, not virtual): My son's buzz-cut, the soft and fuzzy microfiber used for robes and baby blankets, my dog's velvety soft ears.

Favorite Lullaby I Sang to My Children: All Through the Night.

Favorite Outings: Craft classes and antiquing trips with my friend Karen, my children's games and performances, lunch/dinner out with my husband.

Favorite Authors: Any mystery writer. Right now, I'm reading Jane and the Barque of Frailty by Stephanie Barron (Stephanie Barron's mysteries featuring Jane Austen are well-researched, well-written, and footnoted).

Favorite Smells: Homemade bread baking, puppy breath, freshly bathed babies, blooming jasmines, Evelyn rose, ocean breezes.

Best Day of My Life: May 2, 1981 – marrying my sweetheart.

Favorite Foods: Mexican and Italian

Favorite Little Known Fact About Me: I wrote a romance novel. A New York editor for one of the main romance lines actually read it and sent me a very nice rejection letter.

- Kerry

Favorite product I've designed:
Always and Forever Collection

Always and Forever was designed to celebrate those we love on any occasion throughout the year. I used many of my favorite design elements in it: antique books, many pieces from my personal collection of antique paper, flowers from my garden, lace and stitching, and rhinestones. I love how well it coordinates with products in my Sherbert palette as well as products from other Scrap Girls designers.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

The ScrapSimple club contains items that allow YOU to decide the colors and looks you will end up for your digital scrapbooking designs because the ScrapSimple products are completely customizable. You get all the products shown above, a $19.15 value, for $6.99 or less! And if you would like to create designs to share or sell, there's even a commercial club available! Plus, each month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get your creativity going!

April’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Erica Hite and Sarah Batdorf. Their club is full of fun products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Layout ideas:

  • Use the tree template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Branch to document reading a favorite nature story, like The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein.
  • Family portraits will look good with any of these paper templates or frames.
  • Use the word art from the Brush Set: Fabricated to create Family Reunion pages.
  • The leaf and tree paper templates would make great backgrounds for landscape layouts.
  • Create a woodland-themed background that may be used to archive your family tree.
  • Make a page talking about what you have observed in nature lately.
  • Or you could use the tree template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Branch for an African themed layout, like a safari or something. It woudl look great as a silhouette of an African acacia in the savanna.
  • How about using the hinged frame embellishments to do a layout about your parents' love story... how they met, where he proposed, etc.
  • The tree and the leaf border from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Branch can be used for layouts of fall or the forest.

Layout by Carolyn Kaiser

Embellishment ideas:

  • Use the hinges from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived to attach elements to each other or the background.
  • Use the hinges from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived to create a series of hinged journaling plaques.
  • Use the hinges and frames from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived or the hinges and the plaques from ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Word Panels - Curves to make a mini book.
  • Also, those little labels would be perfect to use on the tree to make a labeled, custom family tree. This would be great if you have an unconventional family system!
  • The fabric paper template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Family Room can be used to apply some texture to a frame, a tag, a photo matte...
  • Use the journaling blocks from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived to make abstract background shapes.

Layout by Sarah Batdorf

Card and Printable ideas:

  • Use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Archived to make Christmas ornaments. Print out separate frame layers and place a picture between them.
  • The ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Word Panels - Curves could be used to create name tags to print out for presents or table decorations.
  • Or, use ScrapSimple Layer Your Own Brushes: Word Panels - Curves to print a decorative return address label on an envelope.

Mini Tutorial: How to Make Your own Photo Frame

  • Open a new document and place the Scrap Simple Paper Template Family Room Floral on it.
  • Open your picture; move and resize the template above to see which part of it you want to use as your frame.
  • Select this part of the template that you want to use with the Lasso Tool. Select> Inverse and Delete the part of the template that you don’t need.
  • Duplicate the template layer to have four different layers. Rotate and flip them with Edit> Transform to have a frame all around the picture. Merge the four layers.
  • With the Lasso Tool again, choose the different parts of the template that you want to color differently. Right-click on the selection and use "Layer via Cut". In my layout, I have three different layers.
  • Color the layers, play with the Blend Modes or apply a different style on them. I have colored the parts of the flowers pink and yellow with the Blend Mode set to "Screen" and "Overlay" and applied Erica Hite’s Punch Out Style on one layer.

April Events

April Board Game: Who Am I?

In honor of the month that starts the silliest way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting the following day.

Team Members include anyone featured on the "About Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc. Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts, team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.

If you are the first to guess one of the team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

April Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: Say "Yes" to life! With springtime arriving here in the northern hemisphere, now is a good time to scrap the new life that is around you. Your subject might be new plants, baby animals, new babies, or even a new life in God. Post your layout about the new life around you to the April Monthly contest gallery before Midnight (EST) on April 30th and you could win $10 to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Mid-April Layout Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls boutique!

If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out! (You will only be entering the month and the date, so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. *NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
