Digital Scrapbooking News

I just have to do it. I have to run a sale and spoil you a little bit during Mischief Week. And so - even though we just barely had a sale and I knew Valerie might get annoyed with me - I decided to ignore her advice... Because it is Mischief Week and I have to do some mischief.

I decided that not only would I run a sale, I would run the biggest sale we have had so far this year. (Neener, neener, neeeeeener...! Put that in your hat and run around the block with it, Valerie!)

So hop right on it. I don't know when they are going to let me get away with this kind of sale again. Almost everything in the Scrap Girls Boutique is 21.9% off! But you know how it goes, I do have to turn it off soon, so here’s your warning: It will be over at Midnight, MDT, April 30th.

Does that sound possible? Hope so!

See ya on the message board!

Life Muses by Ro: Scissors

Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap Girls has a cool new blog called Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures? If you haven't checked it out yet, you should. It is full of neat posts from our design team about their lives (including our world traveler, Moss). You’ll get to know them a lot better. I just had to show you the post by Shalae Tippetts. It cracked me up because I’ve personally dealt with this issue before.

I have to admit that I am probably a lot more lenient than most moms when it comes to my children's use of scissors and other arts and crafts media. Being creative and an artist I've always wanted to encourage these skills in my children.
I also taught elementary art, and just could not believe how many of my kindergarten students couldn't even hold a pair of scissors let alone use them properly to cut things. It was a challenge, and I promised myself that my kids would go to school knowing how to cut out paper.

You can find these scissors and other art supplies available in the craft drawers in our computer room/office. Now this has come back to haunt me, and you would think I would make it even slightly harder to make them attainable. The scariest thing that I heard come from my daughters mouth was a proud exclamation of "Mom! Look! I cut Mirian's hair!" She was so proud of herself for her ability, and was quite shocked and felt bad at mom's surprise outcry of "Oh No! What have you done!" I never thought I would find myself crying at something like this, but I did. I cried when I saw her hair. It was butched in every direction, right up to her scalp. It had taken an entire year to finally get her hair long enough for a small ponytail on top and little curls at the bottom, and now it looked horrible.

It took some explaining to Savannah why this was not a good thing to do, and how we never do this. Only mom or people that are trained to cut hair are allowed to cut hair.

Well I guess I didn't learn the first time. A couple of weeks ago I heard a similar statement... "Mom! Mirian is cutting her hair!" I rushed into the other room expecting to find a haircut like her previous sibling haircut. Her hair has grown a lot longer this time, and I came to find that she had cut both sides up to her ears and left the back long since she couldn't reach it.

I breathed a sigh of relief that at least this cut was workable, but it required another talking and lesson about who is allowed to cut hair. She's now sporting a more shorter pixie cut, the best that mom could do based on her lack of hair cutting training.

Have I learned my lesson yet? Nope not yet. I guess I keep thinking hair grows back. Plus I enjoy too much seeing my little girls get excited about creating something from their own little minds as they cut, tape and glue paper together to create little masterpieces.

Tutorial: Taking Apart ScrapSimple Paper Templates

Note: Tutorial Created Using Photoshop CS3 on a PC.

There are exciting things to do with ScrapSimple Paper Templates. Each series of templates has different characteristics. Some templates are re-colored best using a single color, while others provide many more possibilities. Those templates which have distinct color variations, such as black and white, work best for the digital scrapbooking technique I will show you.

Using the Leaf Flourish template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Victorian Scalloperoo, I’m going to show you how to take it apart so that you can add more detail to your design.

The Magic Wand will be your good friend for this technique. You can either choose it in the tool bar on the left side of your screen, or simply hit the letter W on your keyboard and you will have access to the basic Magic Wand tool. When you choose it, you will have a few boxes at the top of your screen. You will check or uncheck those boxes depending on how you want to use the tool.

I want to select all of the white portions of my template. To do this, I will make sure that the “Contiguous” box is unchecked and click on any white portion of the template. When I do this, marching ants appear around all of the white parts of the template. At this point, I can copy and paste this selection if I wish to have it on a new layer or I can simply manipulate it right there. I like to copy and paste, as that leaves the original layer untouched. You can see the marching ants in the image below.

In order to select only the portion of white that is in the leaf border, I check the Contiguous box, hold down the Alt key and click in the large white space. Holding down the Alt key and using any selection tool will allow you to subtract from a selection.

Now that I have only the large white portion selected, I will add a couple of templates from the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Office Use Only into that area as an overlay. There are a few ways to do this. I like to invert the selection by clicking Shift + I. I then drag the overlay into position by using the Move tool and holding down Shift as I drop it onto the page. This causes the overlay to fit into place in the same position it held before. Now, I hit Delete and the area that I don’t want will be gone and I’m left with the selection from the large white area.

I still have the large white area of the template selected in the middle. I need to increase the selection by a few pixels to ensure that the entire white area is covered. Go to Select>Modify>Expand and put in 3 pixels. You will have increased the size of your selection just slightly. Next, I create a new layer and hit Shift+F5 to fill that area with the soft pink color I’ve chosen.

At this point, if you continue having the pink layer on top, you will begin covering up some of the detail in the template with pink. We want to have the pink beneath the detail. I recommend creating a duplicate layer of the template. Go to the Layers Palette, right-click on the template layer and select duplicate layer. A dialogue will pop up asking you if you want a duplicate, click yes and Photoshop will create a duplicate of the template.

Now that you have a duplicate of the template, it is safe to make changes to the top layer of the template. Again, using your Magic Wand, select all of the areas of white in the template. (Remember to uncheck the Contiguous box so that you can select all of the white.) Click Delete. The white is gone and you are left with the black frame. In the Layers Palette, move the black frame above the pink layer. It will look like this in your Layers Palette.

You are now ready to color the leaf shapes. Go to your original template and use the Magic Wand to select all of the white. Check the Contiguous box and with the Magic Wand tool and while holding down the Alt key click inside the large white portion. Notice that now only the leaves are selected.

Once again, you will need to modify the size of the selection, expanding it again as you did before. After you modify your selection, create a new layer and fill the layer with the color you’ve chosen. I chose a soft aqua to complement the pink.

Next, I hit Ctrl+U to bring up the Hue/Saturation dialogue box. While the black frame portion of the template is active, I move the lightness slider all the way to the right to make that layer white. Notice how the whole paper is softened up.

I want to have a bit more definition to the white portion. While holding down the Ctrl key, click on the template frame layer, now white, to select it. Add a light stroke to this selection to define the white just a bit – Edit>Stroke. I select a dark gray for the color and choose 3 pxs for the stroke size. Make sure you click the “inside” option so that the stroke will form inside of your selection. Here is the result. A lightly defined white border surrounds the soft aqua.

Finally, I will add a bit more texture to the pink portion of my paper. I will use a template from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Office Use Only, Gossip Mill. Since I want the texture to be a part of only the pink portion of my paper, I will place it one layer above the pink layer and hit Ctrl+Alt+G to create a mask that allows only the part inside the pink layer to show.

Finally, I need to color the two overlay templates that I have chosen to get the finished look. For the Gossip Mill template, I choose a soft aqua color to fill the template with color and reduce the opacity to 32%. To fill the template, choose the color you want by setting the foreground color to your choice. Ctrl+click inside that template layer to select it and then click Shift+F5 to fill.

For the floral template, select that template’s layer in the Layers Palette. I chose a strawberry color. This time, rather than filling it with color, I bring up the Hue/Saturation dialogue box by hitting Ctrl+U and choose the Colorize option. This allows me to play with the saturation and lightness levels to achieve just the look I want.

April Events

April Board Game: Who Am I?

In honor of the month that starts the silliest way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting the following day.

Team Members include anyone featured on the "About Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc. Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts, team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.

If you are the first to guess one of the team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

April Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: Say "Yes" to life! With springtime arriving here in the northern hemisphere, now is a good time to scrap the new life that is around you. Your subject might be new plants, baby animals, new babies, or even a new life in God. Mid-April Layout Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls boutique!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.
