Life Muses by Ro: Mischief Week is Here Again

Today I am interrupting our usual Muse channel for a message from our resident Mischief Maker, Ro...

It is spring and I have Spring Fever. And you know what that means don't you?

It's time for Mischief Week!

For those of you that haven’t been with us for the past several years, Mischief Week is a week of general madness and mayhem. We have lots of crazy chats, classes, games, prizes, and other random events just in time to usher us into the wonderful world of spring.

Now, to start out the mischief, let's have a sale! The team gets a little tired of my antics, and Valerie (my business partner) asked me to settle down a little bit with the sales because she gets worried. She often asks me, "Aren't you getting a little wild, Ro?"

But sometimes, I just can't help myself!

I just have to do it. I have to run a sale and spoil you a little bit during Mischief Week. And so - even though we just barely had a sale and I knew Valerie might get annoyed with me - I decided to ignore their advice... Because it is Mischief Week and I have to do some mischief.

I decided that not only would I run a sale, I would run the biggest sale we have had so far this year. (Neener, neener, neeeeeener...! Put that in your hat and run around the block with it, Valerie!)

So hop right on it. I don't know when they are going to let me get away with this kind of sale again. Almost everything in the Scrap Girls Boutique is 21.9% off! But you know how it goes, I do have to turn it off soon, so here’s your warning: It will be over at Midnight, MDT, April 30th.

Whack-A-Valerie

If you have been with us for a while, you know that people often take pictures of me and whack me by making a funny layout. Okay, so I can take it.

In honor of Mischief Week, and because I am clearly in the mood to tease Valerie, I am going to let you create Whack-A-Valerie layouts.

Download the high-res PNG file here.

At the end of Mischief Week, I'll pick a couple of the best layouts. The winners will each receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

You may post your layout here: ScrapGirls Gallery> Special Events, Challenges and Contests> Mischief Week 2008.

Never-Ending Story

Woo hoo! It's time for a never-ending story! If you haven't been in on those before, here is how it works:

  • I start a story on the message board. Look in the Events section of the Fun and Games area on the message board for the Mischief Week 2008 Forum for the story.

  • You add something to the story by adding a post to the string.

  • You must wait for someone else to add another piece of the story before you post again.

  • You can not add two posts in a row. If you do, it will be counted as one post, so there isn't a point to doing it. It won't help you pick up any more chances to win the game.

  • You get one chance in the drawing to win the Grand Prize for every addition to the story you write. The Grand Prize will be a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

  • The game ends at Midnight, April 30th, MDT.

Here is the beginning of the story:

“Down the hatch,” the man with the lollypop said. “There’s only a remnant of the medicine left on the spoon.”

The blond stared at him. “But it is such wicked stuff. Do you really think...?”

“Don’t question me,” he snapped, “or you’ll find yourself on the street picking up litter again.”

“Why do you always bring that up?” she said, picking at her long red nails. “It was nearly twenty years ago...”

“...that I found you wandering around Manhattan,” he nodded, a gleam in his eye, “with that purple hat on your head muttering to yourself.”

“I’ve told you a million times,” she said, looking in the mirror as she fluffed her ratted hair a little taller. “I was not muttering. I was talking to someone.”

“There wasn’t anyone there. You were muttering.”

“No, I wasn’t muttering. I was whispering. There is a difference. Besides, someone doesn’t have to be there to talk to them. Look, why don’t you finish what you’re doing. Get it over with before he wakes up.”

He pulled his Tootsie Roll out of his mouth. “So you were whispering. To who? And how? This is 1967. We’re in the scientific age. And I’m telling you that it is impossible to talk to someone who isn’t there... unless...”

She stared at him. “Unless what?”

“Unless....”

What else is happening this week?

Make sure you check the schedule below for upcoming Crops and Classes. We are having loads of them and there will be surprises in each one. (Lots of mischief going on!)

We will be having all sorts of games and fun on the message board, too. You’ll want to keep peeking in the board so you will know what is going on. So stay alert... Mischief Week means there is going to be all sorts of silliness and opportunities to win prizes!

See ya on the message board!

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Custom Shapes

Note: This product review was written using PSE 4.0 on a Mac with OSX.

Some of the directions will be slightly different for different programs or operating systems.

Let me start off by making a comparison to “traditional” paper scrapping. If brushes are the “rubber stamps” of digi-scrapping, then custom shapes are the “die cuts”. While it is true that all Scrap Girl products are designed at 300 dpi for the highest possible quality, you cannot resize them limitlessly. Even at 300 dpi, an element can become pixilated if it is sized too large. Brushes can be even resized beyond 2500 pixels, but there is a loss of quality beyond that point.

However, custom shapes differ from brushes and other elements in that they are vector based. This simply means that your program will “redraw” the shape each time you change the size. You can resize with no risk of losing quality until you Simplify or Rasterize (turn it into pixels) the file. This is the technique that I am going to take advantage of today.

I begin by opening a new 12x12 document and placing the papers, elements and pictures I would like to use. I’ve chosen Durin Eberhart’s Pretty Little Spring Collection Mini and matching Paper Super Mini. I’ve re-colored the pink portions to be a more coral color to match the outfit my daughter is wearing in the photographs.

I want to create some large flower mats for my photos. First, I select my Custom Shapes Tool from the tool bar. Then from the drop down menu, I select the “Defined Proportions” option. This assures that the shape I draw will stay proportionate and not have that “wonky” look to it. You can achieve the same results by holding down the Shift key while drawing your shape.

I have already installed Cherise Oleson’s ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Flowers Abound 8301 Biggie into PSE. To access it, I go to the “Shape” drop menu, since it was not the last shape I used, I will need to load it by clicking on the arrow button on the right hand side of the menu. I select it from my list of Custom Shapes.

I select a flower shape and draw a very large pansy to help accent my layout. Notice how you can still see the edges of the flower beyond the canvas. Unlike using a brush, which will not draw beyond the canvas edge, these edges will still be there if I choose to move the flower. Also notice the gray area in the Layers Palette - this indicates a vector layer.

I continue to select flowers that will accent my layout. When I am satisfied with the results, I drag a paper layer over the shape and group them together (Layer> Group with Previous or Ctrl+G on a PC or Cmmd+G on a Mac). Other programs may call this a clipping mask. When I know I am not going to change a shape any further, I will Simplify the layer by going to Layer> Simplify Layer or right-clicking on the layer and selecting "Simplify Layer" from the menu options. Some programs will call the “Simplify” command “Rasterize”.

Now I complete my layout by adding my photos, frames, journaling and additional embellishments.

Kelly graduated from Wayland Baptist University in 2003 with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies (elementary education) and taught 6th grade math before starting a family with her husband, Jamie. April Events

April Board Game: Who Am I?

In honor of the month that starts the silliest way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting the following day.

Team Members include anyone featured on the "About Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc. Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts, team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.

If you are the first to guess one of the team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

April Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: Say "Yes" to life! With springtime arriving here in the northern hemisphere, now is a good time to scrap the new life that is around you. Your subject might be new plants, baby animals, new babies, or even a new life in God. Mid-April Layout Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls boutique!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out! (You will only be entering the month and the date, so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.

  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.

You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
