To achieve an aged look on your photo, use any grunge brush.
Adjust the size, set the color to white and Blend Mode to "Soft
Light." Stamp at the edges of your photo and just a bit at the center.
For this layout I used three brushes from Brandie Valenzuela’s
Grungelle Brush Set: smudge, scratch and worn.

I had a great time using Keri Schueller’s Scrap Simple Design
Layout Template Vintage Nursery in a different way. I combined elements
from two of the templates to create a new layout. I used the photo frames,
masks and shadows along with the strings from one template and then the
scallop border and photo mats from the second template. I added
in one of Keri’s shapes and the composition of my layout was complete.

When I made the Calendar pages for this layout, I wanted them to
appear to have been torn out of an older calendar and saved. After
assembling the February and August pages, I combined them with Melissa
Renfro’s SSET:
Lifted Journal Paper Super Biggie to give them an edge on the top
(and some wrinkles on the August page) that makes them look that way.
For the 1993 page, I used a wrinkled paper from Angie Briggs' Scenic
Route Collection as
an overlay, to add the wrinkles, torn edge and an aging effect.

To create my background, first I duplicated my photo. On the duplicated
photo, I ‘cut out’ my children from the background by
tracing around them with the Pen Tool, making a selection, inversing
the selection and deleting the remaining part of the photo. On the
original photo, I put Melissa Renfro’s BasicPhotoAction_SmartGlow
action onto the photo and then pulled back its Opacity to 45%. Under
both photo layers, I placed Keri Schueller’s Illuminate_TexturedScrolls_Green
paper to get the result you see here.

Because of the position of the page curl, the shadows were off. To
put them in the correct place, I inverted the color of the curl and
clipped a brown paper to it. Then I changed the Blend Mode to
Screen and adjusted the Saturation and Lightness in the Adjust Hue/Saturation
menu until I was pleased with the result.
Journaling Reads:
That song goes on to says, “No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing the dream that you wish will come true”.
There was a time I did not believe that sentiment. After having
a miscarriage, my heart was grieving. I looked at other people’s
children and wished for motherhood. Both of you were dreams-
at times, I thought you would only remain a dream- but I think it really
must be true. A dream is a wish your heart makes. Dreams and wishes
really do come true. You are proof of my wishes. So, my
little ones... dream.

Journaling Reads:
Music… everyone has their own taste in music… whether it be country, rap, classical, jazz, rock, whatever. Music tells stories, reminds us of good times and not so good times. Music evokes emotions… music moves us. For me, I can listen to just about anything and have had my share of favorites over the years. In high school, my friends and I loved anything we could dance to. The upbeat music was always sure to put us in a good mood. I had other friends who were more into alternative music and I liked many of those bands as well and started listening to more and more as I went through college. I danced differently to this music. I felt differently when I listened to this music. But, one staple that has remained throughout my life, is my love for rock music… One of the first cassette tapes I ever bought was by the band “Poison,” it was “Look What the Cat Dragged In.” I listened to that tape over and over, never tiring of the “hair band” music; the guys who wore makeup and sang about love, sex and rock n’ roll. I discovered other rock and metal bands and did my share of head-banging in the 80s and 90s. My alternative friends called me a “rocker chick,” but I didn’t care. I loved all kinds of music, with rock holding fast to my heart. Today, rock music is still my favorite type of music. I still love to listen to the bands from the 80s and 90s the most. It’s funny… Jeff loves this music as much as I do and we are able to share this together. And, what’s even more funny is that Jordan is also starting to listen to the music too… she sure knows when it’s a Motley Crue song! They say that as you get older your taste for music mellows… I think I will always love rock music… always hang on to the memories associated with the songs… always have that excited feeling when I hear the familiar chorus of my favorite songs… always have a special place in my heart for the man who sings to me… maybe just not as much head-banging or big hair. Long live ROCK!!! Written: August 16, 2007

A Designer's Life: Jan Hicks
A Day in the Life
I am always amazed and in awe by how international we are here at Scrap Girls. We not only have members from all over the world, but our staff is very international, too. We have a product designer from South Africa, a layout designer from Australia, welcoming committee members from Canada and more.
I love learning about our different cultures and countries, hearing about the different religious celebrations we enjoy, and even people going to the beach in December when it’s cold and snowy in my part of the world. How wonderful is that? But, as we get to know each other, through message board posts and layouts, I am also always humbled by how very much we are similar, in spite of our differences. So, I thought that I would share a little glimpse into my daily life, and ask… how similar is your daily routine to mine? I’d love to see your answers posted on the message board!
5:30 a.m. – My husband’s alarm goes off and he gets up. He is always very good about getting out of bed right when the alarm goes off.
6:25 a.m. – My alarm goes off. I am not so good about getting out of bed right away, which is why the alarm is set for 6:25 rather than 6:30. I usually stumble out of bed around 6:35.
6:35–7:20 a.m. – I pet my kitties, take my multi-vitamins and then climb into the shower to wake up. I then brush my teeth, dry my hair, get dressed and, if it happens to be a day I have to head out for something, I’ll put on make-up. At this point, being a morning person, I’m full of energy and raring to go.
7:20 a.m. – I get the kitties their breakfast.
7:25–8:00 a.m. – This is when the madness starts of getting the boys moving, if they aren’t already up and dressed, getting them their breakfast and making and packing their lunches. Some days, the boys are totally cooperative and everything goes smoothly with very little stress. Other days, they don’t. Those days usually involve growling at my younger son more than once, frantically running from pillar to post washing out lunchboxes, cleaning fruit, making sandwiches, putting just the right amount of butter and syrup on waffles, signing any homework papers that didn’t get signed the night before and then harassing them to get shoes on, lunches in their back-packs and get out the door to walk down to the bus stop. Oh, and if it’s cold, trying to convince them that they really do need to wear some sort of jacket. Whew!
8:00–8:05 a.m. – While waiting at the bus stop, I chat with the other mom and my boys.
8:05–8:30 a.m. – If it’s Monday or Tuesday, I then rush back to the house after the bus comes, make my coffee and heat up an omelet that my husband has kindly made and frozen for me over the weekend. The other days of the week are more leisurely in the morning, but still include coffee and an omelet.
8:30–9:45 a.m. (Monday or Tuesday) I head to school to volunteer in computer lab. I help out four teachers in this way throughout the week, even though I only have two boys. I have become known as a good person to have in computer lab, so other teachers besides my sons’ have asked (begged!) me to help them, too.
9:45–3:15 p.m. This time is my time to play, even if it’s playtime that I get paid for. This is my Scrap Girls time. The first order of business every work day is to reply to any outstanding emails that have come in overnight. Most of these are from our wonderful teachers. The emails can deal with anything from approving new class ideas, scheduling classes, letting them know how well classes are selling, to editing the class PDFs. After the emails are taken care of, it’s time to work on products or articles that need to be written. And, of course, I always pop onto the Scrap Girls message board at different times throughout the day to answer any questions I can and just generally touch base there.
3:15 p.m. – The mayhem starts again when the boys arrive home from school. Their first order of business is to pet the kitties. Sometimes, they even say hi to me! After they get their shoes off and get the lunchboxes out of their backpacks, they have a snack and it’s time to get down to business – homework. This can take anywhere from a half-hour to an hour-and–a-half, depending on how much they have to do and their attitude.
3:45 p.m. – My husband comes home from work! Yeah! It is one of my favorite times of the day! He checks Samuel’s math homework, gets Ben back on track, and we have just general silly, relaxed family time.
5:30–6:00 p.m. – Dinner time… YUM! And, double yum because my husband usually cooks dinner. He loves to cook!
6:00–7:00 p.m. – The boys do the dishes and then are allowed to play video games, so Mike and I usually have some quiet time to talk, discuss our day and have some down time.
7:00–8:00 p.m. – Treat and movie time. We all get some kind of yummy treat and then settle down and watch a movie. The boys take turns picking what we are going to watch.
8:00–8:30 p.m. – Bedtime routine for the boys. This consists of the usual – they shower, take their medicine and brush their teeth. We then usually have about 15–20 minutes of reading time, which means that I read out loud to them. I enjoy this time as much as they do.
8:30–10:00 p.m. – Time for more adult, quiet time… ahhh. Sometimes, we watch a movie or a show that we’ve recorded on TV. Sometimes, we’ll just sit and work on our computers, and other times we’ll sit and read.
10:00 p.m. – Time to head to bed and rest up for another fast-paced day!

Favorite product I've designed:
ScrapSimple Paper Templates: KaleidoTiles Biggie

I have always loved kaleidoscopes, so when I was playing around with these tile images and saw what happened when I flipped them around, I was thrilled. I starting playing around with adding colors, layers, blending modes and then I was even more excited. The kaleidoscopes I created were beautiful! The only sad part is that these fun kaleidoscope backgrounds are covered up in a layout.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts

The Scrap Girls Monthly Club allows you to get all of the newest looks
while saving money! It is perfect for anyone who wants beautiful, coordinated
digital scrapbooking supplies that are easy to use. You get all the
products shown above, a $29.33 value, for $9.99 or less! Plus, each
month we will help you find new ways to use your club contents to the
fullest with this article full of ideas, tips, and projects to get
your creativity going!
April’s Scrap
Girls Club’s featured designer is Keri Schueller. Keri
says about her collection, "I guess since I've been going through
a lot of my own soul searching, I thought of the journals, the self
expression, the absolute beauty found in the tiny details, the remembering
to take care of ourselves and honor ourselves. A sort of tipping
my hat to carving out a new life and becoming a healthy and whole
person." A lot of her inspiration came from a local store that has
feminine, rustic, vintage yet modern, unique, playful, sophisticated
and earthy clothing, jewelry and home decor.
Let’s
look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this
amazing club!

Layout ideas:
- Create family tree layouts using the tree paper.
- Make a Prom night layout with the perfume bottle embellishment.
- Do you have hummingbirds that visit your feeders? Use the hummingbird
border to create page about them.
- Document your love letters using the old letter embellishment from
the Zoom kit.
- Layouts about visiting Grandma are perfect for the colors
and patterns here.
- Boutique, antique or thrift-store shopping layouts will work well
with this collection also.
- Boys in nature will look great with the colors in this collection.

- The hummingbird border and leaf frame will work well for gardening
photos.
- Going through the attic, sifting through memories, looking through
old photo albums, learning about your family tree, etc. will all
work well with these items. Even if you don't have photos of these
experiences, just writing down your memories!
- How about a date on the pier or waterfront? Use the bird banner
and blue papers to make a stunning layout.
- Create a mini album showing your trip to the countryside, or “catalogue” farm
life.
- Use the word art and photos of your loved ones (including yourself!)
to create layouts about remembering to take care of
yourself, taking time to breathe and appreciate life.
- Summer camping or other summer activities would look great with
these papers.
- How about the Jewish
holiday of Purim? Jo Corne uses this club for a beautiful layout
showcasing this holiday below.

Card ideas:
- This collection would also be wonderful for general greeting
cards, shower invitations, etc.
- Create a "Get Well Soon" card,
especially for someone suffering from a long-term illness or chronic
case, using the word art.

Project by Heidi Dillon

Printable project ideas:
- Print the file tabs out on to clear labels and use them to spruce
up your office decor. Use some of the photo frames to outline lists
of the folder's contents. After printing, cut them out and run them
through a sticker making machine (such a a Xyron) and you could have
an entire matching set.
- Create journal covers using the papers.
- Make inspirational calendar pages or wall art using the
tree paper with a favorite prayer, poem or quote on it for daily
inspiration.
- Print out the paper(s) and use them as a matting for a photo of
a beautiful flower and frame it for someone special to put in their
office or whatever space they spend a lot of time in.
- Print some of the embellishments or alphas onto the new
rub-on printable papers and rub them onto inexpensive clear acrylic
containers to "dress
up" a
vanity. If you wanted to organize your things a little more, you
could print some trinkets from the embellishments to put in the slots
of a drawer organizer.
We hope these lists give you some ideas to get you scrapping! We’d
love to see what you come up with. There’s even a special
gallery available for you to show off your Club creations and inspire
each other, so start creating!
Have fun!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
-
Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
-
Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
-
Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
-
Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
-
See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
-
Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
-
Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
-
See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
-
Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
-
Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
-
Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
-
And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |
