Life Muses by Ro: Concentration Is the Thing
“Concentration is the thing,” she said. “If you
are not able to implement it into your life, it will be very problematic.”
“Problematic,” he
repeated.
“Yes, problematic,” she continued. “Because
if you are unable to concentrate, you are not able to sustain the energy
required to make progress in the task you have been assigned. Your
task is critical.”
“Critical. It is critical.”
“It certainly is critical
because everyone is depending upon you to complete your project correctly.
If you do not do it correctly, then confusion will ensue.”
“Ensue.”
“Ensue,” her eyes stared seriously. “No
one will know which side to use. Should they use the right side or
the left side? It will be backwards. And backwards is unfortunate.”
“Unfortunate.”
“It certainly would be unfortunate.
Innocent people will starve. You don’t want to be the cause of
people starving do you?”
He shook his head. No, he didn’t
want people to starve.
“Are you ready then? Will you pay attention?”
He nodded.
Yes, he would pay attention.
“Remember, then... The spoon
goes on the right side of the plate and the fork goes on the left side.
Do not mix them up.”
“But, Mommy,” he said. “I
don’t know which
hand is right and which hand is left.”
“Which hand do you
eat with?”
“This one.”
“That is your right side. Put the spoon
on this side of the plate.”
The little boy twidgeted in his shoes. “Can
I watch cartoons? I’m tired of playing house.”
“Oh
go ahead,” his sister replied. “I’ll make
the dog come and play with me.”

Designer Do-Over: Paula Wright
My Original

Original by Paula Wright
I have always really liked this picture of our youngest
daughter. It was such a beautiful day when the photo was taken
and it is still a lovely memory. When I found Scrap Girls, this
was one of the first photos that I wanted to use in a layout. There
are some things that I still like about the page; however, I now see
that it could be better by making a few changes. Originally I
thought that a yellow background would bring out the yellow of the
flowers, but it seems a little pale and the photo doesn’t feel
grounded. I also wanted to bring out the western theme of the
photo more in my layout.
My Do Over

For my Do-Over, I used a background that was the color of her skirt.
I liked this because it felt warmer and the whole page looks more balanced.
A lighter frame on the photo pulls your eye in and adds contrast from
the dark background. I still liked the placement and angle of
the photo as well as the type I used for the title. So those stayed
nearly the same, but now the title shows up and the theme of the page
is clearer.

I still wanted to use Syndee Nuckles' Brush Set: A Waltz to
Remember 1. On
a new layer, I used her brush with a brown selected from the background
with the Eyedropper Tool. I then set the Blend Mode to "Multiply"
and the Opacity to 50%. This allows the brush to look like it
is part of the fabric background. I scaled the brush design up and
dragged it to the edge of the page, and then duplicated the layer and
rotated it 90 degrees. This made a nice frame for the edge of
the photo and added interesting texture to the layout. For the
secondary type, I used a font that had a distinct western flair, was
more readable and bolder.

Now the page needed more color to tie in the
photo. For a photo mat, I chose the ScrapSimple Paper Template:
On the Edge 1 for the shape and added stitches and holes for texture.
This step helped accent the photo and the shape of the mat added to
the western feel.
Just a few more embellishments and my Do-Over would
be complete. The
Durango Collection has lots of western embellishments to choose
from. I selected the black leather fringe, a paisley border and topped
the photo with a suede photo wrap. What I learned from this exercise
is that if you have photos that are favorites, and you have additional
skills since you started scrapping, take another look at your layout.
Making little changes can make a big difference!

Events
April Board Game: Who Am I?
In honor of the month that starts the silliest
way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month
we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about
our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who
Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will
post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who
Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly
guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member
is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting
the following day.
Team Members include anyone featured on the "About
Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product
Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc.
Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found
anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts,
team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.
If you are the first to guess one of the team
members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap
Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly
message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

April Layout Contests:
Layout
Contest: Say "Yes" to life! With
springtime arriving here in the northern hemisphere, now
is a good time to scrap the new life that is around you.

life around you to the April Monthly contest gallery before
Midnight (EST) on April 30th and you could win $10 to the
Scrap Girls Boutique!
Mid-April Layout
Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness
in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something
silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing
something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or
a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by
midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls
boutique!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't
think they won't and that you will escape from it happening
to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen
someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing
up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is
Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software,
operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives.
It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is
recommending it to you.
