Life Muses by Ro: Halo-ed

“Ahhhhhh... ahhhhhhhhh,” the monks sing.

I shudder at my computer. I am about to be Halo-ed.

It starts innocently enough. I can hear him in the other room, strapped into his wireless headset saying, “I’ll go over here then. No. You get out of there.”

There will be pauses and then grunts as the action begins. But then, things start to heat up. We have moved into the Halo-ed phase of the day’s event.

“Wr9bourewlkj, you idiot,” I hear from the other side of the wall.

“Calm down,” I warn.

He pretends not to hear me. “Get out of there,” he mutters, disgusted. “Get out of that corner. No fair. No fair! Soiutoe8!”

“Andrew.”

He doesn’t reply, but when time begins to pass without another outburst, I feel a false sense of security.

“@#$* dpoihdfA3UP70987 *&()&*(p !!!”

“ANDREW!” I bellow down the hall, shocked. “I’m going to unplug you.”

Again, he ignores me. “You idiot! You can’t do that. You’re cheating.”

“Settle down, Andrew. I will unplug it.”

“^)(*&w vkhabpiu! )*& poifjdo j!@!!!” he screams.

“That’s it. Gary! You need to unplug Andrew.”

I hear Gary’s obedient clunk, clunk, clunk as he goes down the stairs towards the modem. Shortly, Andrew bursts out of his room. “What did you do that for?”

“I told you that if you can’t watch your mouth when you’re playing Halo, we’re unplugging your Internet connection.”

His purple face and bulging eyes look like they belong to one of the creatures in the X-Box. “I can’t wait until I move out.”

I stare back at my nearly 20-year-old man. “Neither can I. Meanwhile, you’re in my house and you can’t seem to handle playing that game. Why don’t you give it up?”

“It’s not the game, Mom. It’s those little kids.”

“Little kids?”

“Yeah,” he says. “They cheat. They don’t get Halo-etiquette.”

Halo-etiquette. I have officially heard it all.

“Can’t you skip playing them?”

He turns a deeper shade of purple. “You can’t skip playing anyone that challenges you or you don’t get points. I get penalized.”

I sigh. “Well, the Halo-etiquette and penalization in Mom’s house is that Mom doesn’t have to blush once the monks begin to sing or X-Box is no longer connected to the Internet.”

He turns on his heel, barrels down the hall and slams his door. I have offended his manhood.

The next day, when eating cupcakes with Mom in the kitchen, he suddenly says, “I’ve been wondering when you are going use the idea I gave you for a muse.”

I choke. “You mean the one where I tell what it is like to listen to you play Halo?”

“Yeah. I’ve been waiting for months. When are you going to write it?”

“Are you sure you want me to do that?” I smile.

He laughs back. “Of course I do. It’s funny. I lose it when I’m playing Halo.”

“Why don’t you give it up, then?”

He rolls his eyes. “You just don’t get it, do you? Playing the game is fun.”

Halo-ed. I’m doomed to wander throughout eternity listening to the sound of monks singing songs of impending Halo-ing. Because even though I am seriously considering taking a hammer to the X-Box, I’m just as happy to keep its owner around.

- Ro

P.S. In an attempt to save myself from Halo-ing, I have tried ear plugs and sound canceling headphones. They don’t work. But, Andrew is about to be moved to a newly completed basement bedroom that has been sheet-rocked with special sound canceling material which is supposed to keep the noise located to his region of the house. Two doors have been installed between him and the stairwell to protect my sensitive ears and sensibilities.

We’ll see if it works.

But, in case these extreme measures fail, I still have ownership of the Internet connection. And a hammer. Just in case...

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Tutorial: Express Your Personal Style With ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with a Mac.

Creating large photo albums can be an intimidating task, especially when you know you have to cover a large number of topics on the same theme. ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates can come in really handy to take some of the work out of designing multiple digital scrapbooking layouts.

Looking at gray templates can seem somewhat daunting. You may ask yourself what colors do I want to use? What style do I want to go with? Should I use themed kits or use one of my favorite kits?

You can follow the template exactly or you can use it simply as a guide or a sketch, however you feel most comfortable.

There are many different styles you might like to consider for a baby book, including traditional, vintage, fresh and funky, or mod (with simple, clean lines). You may want to experiment with a few styles and see what style appeals to you more. Here I will show how you can use layout templates precisely or a bit more loosely, but still be able to express your own personal style with a provided design.

For these examples, I’m using the ultrasound page from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: Baby Book 1 - 12x12.

Layout by Erica Hite
larger view

First, I will do a traditional style with this template. I guess I think of traditional as blues for a boy or pinks for a girl, with the style being somewhat simple and clean.

As you can see, I did not deter much from the original template. I did, however, add a few details that weren’t in the template, such as a metal style to the photo turn; a fabric style to the lower left tab; and a striped white vellum style, metal style, and fabric style to various parts of the green tag. I also had fun using a couple of dynamic brushes for adding stitching and inked edges to the papers.

Even if you decide to follow a template closely, you can still be creative and personalize your template by adding little details to your layout.

Layout by Erica Hite
larger view

With this layout, I decided to go with a vintage style. I used the template a little more loosely. I added a beautiful vintage photo frame border to the ultrasound image, added a roughed up piece of paper behind the journaling, a torn paper to the background, created little paper strips behind the prompts, removing the journaling lines, placed a notebook paper behind the ultrasound photo, added aged paper styles to the tag pieces and journal prompt strips, used my own typefaces for the lettering on the tag, and painted around the edges of the layout with a dynamic brush.

The basic structure of the layout is still there, along with the helpful prompts for journaling, but I added much more personalization from the previous example.

Layout by Erica Hite
larger view

On this last layout, I went with a more fresh and funky style and decided not to confine myself with what I think baby layouts should look like. Personally, I love bright colors for baby clothes and furnishings, so this layout appeals most to my personal style of the three examples.

I had fun adding shooting stars and flourish doodles and filled in the see-through areas with the same colors from the dots in the background paper. I replaced the template’s tag with a tag embellishment and ribbon and used another typeface for the wording. I added little strips of color behind the journaling prompts and added red stitching, ink stains and a dynamic brush paint-stroke here and there for some fun.

I hope that these few examples will encourage you to experiment with your own style and with applying them to your baby books or other ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Template projects. Follow your templates closely or loosely, but experiment and have fun!

This month we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting the following day.

Team Members include anyone featured on the "About Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc. Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts, team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.

If you are the first to guess one of the team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
