Name of designer: Amy Lemaniak
Name of layout: Baby Loves Disco
Software used: PSE 5
Name of challenge: ScrapSimple Paper
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I took Cherise’s Scrap Simple Paper Templates: Black and White Plus and a blue paper from her Black & White Plus Collection and dragged both onto my layout with the ScrapSimple paper layer on top. I changed the blending mode of the ScrapSimple paper layer to Multiply. Still on the ScrapSimple paper layer, I then used my magic wand to select some of the rounded squares, right-clicked and did a Layer via Copy. I repeated this on a few of the other shapes and I then applied various glitter styles to my new layers to get a funky look on my layout.

Name of layout: Artist
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2
Name of challenge: Paper Templates
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted the title to have the same colors as the paper, so I chose one color at a time and one letter at the time. Changed the hue and saturation by choosing "colorize".

Name of designer: Stefanie Harris
Name of layout: Soulmates
Software used: Photoshop CS2
Name of challenge: SS Paper Templates
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted this layout to have a very natural feel, so I chose an earthy color palette and my supplies all have an organic touch to them. Though this picture was taken on a trip to the beach, it was cropped tightly enough to allow me the freedom to use whichever “theme” I wanted. By using Blending Modes (Multiply, in this case), I could add the Abstract Leaves pattern from Cherise’s SS Paper Templates: Intertwined to my layout while preserving the texture of the background paper (Mustard, from Cherise’s Viva Mexico Collection).

Name of designer: Jo Corne
Name of layout: DreamWorld
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: ScrapSimple Paper Templates
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To create my background paper I used three different ScrapSimple Papers from Cherise Oleson. (SSPaper_Mardigras_SolidTexture, SSPaper_BWPlus_Paisley and SSPaper_BWPlus_GeoSquares). First, I laid down the SolidTexture paper and gave it a color overlay. Then I layered the GeoSquares paper on top, set its Blending mode to Screen, and lowered it to 85%. Lastly, I layered the Paisley paper on top and changed its Blending mode to Linear Burn at 100%.

Name of designer: Paula Wright
Name of layout: Almost Twins
Software used: PS CS2
Name of challenge: Using Type In a New Way
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
While working on this layout I knew I wanted to use a yellow accent paper to compliment the photo; but it was just too bright. I thought this needs to be muddied up a little. Voila! Mud as in 4 wheeling was the perfect addition to this photo. I loaded Melissa Renfro’s splatter brush set, selected a good mud color and splattered away. It gave texture and interest to the page, subdued the yellow and added to the theme of the layout. You just never know when you’ll need a little mud in your scrapping.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
The coloring of the title did not show up well against the red background I had. To lighten it up a bit I changed the blend mode to “Screen”. Then I added a small drop shadow to make it stand out just a little more.

A Designer's Life: Theresa Kavouras
I Am Not Perfect
I am not perfect.
I am slightly shorter than average.
I weigh slightly less than average.
I color my hair because I believe I make a better blonde.
I don’t care for my brown eyes.
My eyebrows stick out in all different directions.
My bottom teeth are crooked.
My face breaks out once a month (still).
I don’t sleep well.
I strive to look better than my age.
I like to fish.
I enjoy a good ballgame… any ballgame.
I don’t watch Oprah. In fact, I don’t watch much TV at all.
I don’t believe in TV or video games for my kids.
I believe in books, art, frogs and tickle fights.
I don’t always get dinner ready on time, but I take the time to prepare it.
Some nights, I don’t want to cook dinner at all, but I do it anyway and don’t complain.
Sometimes, I wish we could live on pizza deliveries.
I don’t like to talk on the phone because I don’t have much to say.
Yet, sometimes, when I’m on it, I say too much.
I do not like to waste time doing anything.
I take super fast showers.
I multi-task until I have so much going on that I forget what I was doing.
I have every minute of my day spent before it begins.
I strive to be on time. Sometimes, I’m too early, but I’m never late.
I don’t take much time out for myself.
There are days when I don’t leave my house.
There are days when I just want to run away from home.
I have nights when I want to crawl into bed with my babies, although they aren’t babies anymore.
And, some nights, I want to sleep in the guest room.
Sometimes, when I am running errands, I drop by my kid’s school and sit in the parking lot because I miss them that much.
But, some days, I don’t want to be a mom.
Everyday, I look at my husband and thank God that he is my husband.
Yet, some days, I don’t want to be a wife.
I don’t handle stress well.
I hold my breath for long periods of time and don’t become aware of it until I am close to passing out.
I do not scream and yell when things don’t go my way.
I don’t shout obscenities.
I don’t release my anger towards whoever is in the room, rather I keep it all inside until my heart skips a beat or until I’m so down that I can feel my hands dragging on the ground.
But, I always recover.
I take sugar and cream in my coffee.
I eat chocolate everyday.
I like to have an alcoholic beverage once in a while because I like the way it makes me feel.
I exercise five days a week.
I like my steak rare (cold, pink center).
I don’t always eat my vegetables.
I like to keep my surroundings neat.
I tolerate my family’s slovenliness… but just barely.
I prefer to avoid conflict.
I deal with situations that others might turn their backs on.
I don’t wallow in self-pity.
I believe people can save themselves.
I believe in God.
No, I am not perfect.
But, I believe in me.

Themed Thoughts
We’ve noticed various requests popping up here and there on
the message boards, people looking for themed items in collections.
Even though our fabulous designers are great at taking requests, they
can only do so much! So, to tide you over until they can get to everybody's
requests, we’ve
come up with an article to help you use those great Scrap Girls products
you already have (or should have!) in your stash for these types of
themes.
Gardening
There are some fun products that you can use for general garden themes:
These products have gardening tools and equipment in them:
Here are some things you can use to make seed packets:
If you'd like to make your own dirt or ground for your plants to grow
in, use these:
For a fruit orchard, these two are prize-winners:
Not to mention all the tons of flowers
throughout the Boutique:
And some fun extras that no garden would be complete without:

Graduation
If you've got a young one graduation from Kindergarten or Elementary
school, take a look at these products:
You can always use your child's school colors as a base for a great
graduation layout. Try some of these basics:
For the ceremony itself, these products are great:
If you want things to be more school-oriented, these products will
be perfect:
For dignified and elegant layouts to suit the mood of your graduation
photos, these will be great:

I want to stress that these suggestions are not an exhaustive list
-- they just represent a small percentage of the type of products you
can find if you look creatively and think outside the box.
I hope that with these great products at your disposal you’ll
be able to creatively use those themed photos to make wonderful layouts
that you’ll treasure.
Have fun!

Events
April Board Game: Who Am I?
In honor of the month that starts the silliest
way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month
we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts
about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game
of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming
Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team
Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added
daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is
being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a
new team member will be featured starting the following day.
Team Members include anyone featured on
the "About
Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product
Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc.
Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found
anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts,
team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.
If you are the first to guess one of the
team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to
the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during
the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win
prizes as possible!

It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
-
Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
-
Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
-
Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
-
Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing

-
See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make

is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
-
See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
-
Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder

Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
-

-
And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
