Life Muses by Ro: Obsession for Organizing
Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap Girls has a cool new blog called Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures? If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. It is full of neat posts from our design team about their lives (including our world traveler, Moss). You’ll get to know them a lot better. Here’s a fun one by Brandy Hackman. I have to say that my closet would never look like this. Never. Never. Never. Brandy, you have officially amazed me.

Obsession for Organizing
I have always had an obsession for all things “organized.” I love to organize things. I enjoy looking at things that are in an organized state. I am constantly brainstorming new ways to organize things more efficiently. Many people tend to label me as organized, although from my own perspective, I am not nearly as organized as I want to be… I am always behind on my things-to-be-organized list.
This weekend, we got a babysitter for our kids. It was the first time she had babysat for us and so it was the first she had been in our home. Apparently, my obsession for organizing was even obvious to this young teenager because not long after dropping her back home, I received a call from her mom, a friend of mine. Her daughter had explained to her all about my organized kitchen right down to my sorted canned food and neatly stacked cake mixes.
With three young, messy, crazy boys who “undo” more than I can possibly “do,” I would have been committed to an institution by now if I had OCD. I won’t show you the closet containing a HEAPING pile of outgrown kids’ clothes - in three different sizes and two different seasons - that need to be sorted, organized and packed up until the next in line grows into them. Until I get to that project, I will just try to keep the closet door closed and go open the pantry and remind myself how organized my kitchen is right now!

- Brandy Hackman

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own
muse to [email protected]. If it is selected
for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have
fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;
engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems,
another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does
not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not
have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Scrap
Simple Photo Templates
Note: Review written with screenshots
from Photoshop CS2.
Scrap Simple Photo Templates are so
versatile. You can use them for things like creating papers or making
brushes, but today I'm going to show you how you can make textures
out of them. I will be using Photoshop CS2 for this tutorial.
I love flowers and have a Lily Garden that I'm very
proud of. Every summer it rewards me for my hard work with a lovely
display of many varieties and colors of day lilies. I wanted to show
off one of them in a layout. I wanted the flower in my layout to look
like it was resting on a field of grass, and I wanted texture. I chose
to use one of Jan Hicks' Scrap Simple Photo Templates:
Grasses 3201 Mini, specifically, "JHI_SSPhoto_Grasses-3201_2-12x12.jpg."

Next we need to convert this Photo Template to black &
white, and I'm going to show you my favorite way to do that. Set
your foreground/background colors in Photoshop to the default colors
(keyboard shortcut "d"). Create a New Adjustment
Layer by selecting from the file menu Layer> New Adjustment
Layer> Gradient Map (use the default settings).

Select "OK" and this screen will appear:

The gradient showing will be constructed from whatever
colors we have set for our foreground and background before we perform
this step. This is why we set our colors to the default colors of
black foreground and white background earlier. Select "OK."
Right-click on the Gradient Map Layer and select "Merge
Down" from the fly out menu. Our Photo Template now looks like
this:

We could use the file like this, but I chose to give it
a little more contrast by adjusting the levels. From the menu bar select Image> Adjustments> Levels and change the Input
Levels to 37, 1.00, 255. Select "OK."

Now our Photo Template looks like this:

This will be our new texture file. Save this file as
a PSD file in the folder where you store your textures. The default
folder is located here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2\Presets\Textures.
I have my own Preset folder where I save all of my Presets outside
of Photoshop. That way if I have to reinstall Photoshop or upgrade
it, I won't lose everything I have purchased or created. Just
remember where you save it so you can use it in the Texturizer Filter
later.
I chose a paper from the Sage Collection,
"DMI_Sage_wrinkle.jpg," to receive the texture:

To apply the texture, from the menu bar in Photoshop select Filter> Texture> Texturizer. Click on the arrow
next to Texture and select "Load Texture." Then browse to
the place you have stored your texture file and select it. I chose the
following settings: Scaling 100%, Relief 22, Light: Bottom, and I checked
"Invert." Select "OK."

After applying the texturizer my paper looked like this:

Here's a close-up view of the texture:

I wanted to take this a step further so I opened the original
Photo Template and dragged it on top of my texturized background paper.
On the Photo Template layer I changed the Blending Mode to "Linear
Burn" and changed the opacity to 25%.

This was my result. The texture shows up better when viewed
in full resolution.

Here is my completed layout:

In honor of the month that starts the silliest
way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month
we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts
about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game
of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming
Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team
Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added
daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is
being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a
new team member will be featured starting the following day.
Team Members include anyone featured on
the "About
Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product
Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc.
Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found
anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts,
team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.
If you are the first to guess one of the
team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to
the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during
the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win
prizes as possible!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think
they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you
forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday
and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing
up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software,
operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives.
It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is
recommending it to you.
