Life Muses by Ro: The Time to Live Life is Now

“A little garden in which to walk, an immensity in which to dream, at one’s feet that which can be cultivated and plucked; overhead that which one can study and meditate upon; some herbs on earth and all the stars in the sky.” – Victor Hugo

Every spring I gravitate towards gardening magazines, rich with greenery, and sigh at the lush borders and thick flowers. I imagine what it might be like to live in a spot where roses climb up walls and I have private little places to sit, think and write. I envision cool breezes on hot summer days, glasses of icy lemonade, bees buzzing, and wafts of sweet lavender.

When we purchased our current home, the yard was a disaster. My daughter reported that the neighborhood children told her that she lived in a haunted house because the plants were so over grown and creepy looking. The chain-link fence surrounding the front yard was broken and bent. The towering pine trees were in desperate need of water and their needles dropped on the lawn and smothered it. Bind weed threatened to exterminate the patches of lawn that struggled for sunlight. The unattractive junipers lining the front of the porch had seen better days and couldn’t be saved.

The backyard was worse with its cracked and collapsing cement surrounded by indescribable plant life. But, the trees... oh, the trees in the back yard – including one magnificent maple – had sold me. I adored the trees and since it takes decades to grow trees like this house has, I had decided that the rest of it could be fixed. It would be worth the pain to own these trees.

There were a few redeeming plants in the front that could be saved: some Quaking Aspen trees, a Flaming Bush, and two unrecognized green things that could stay until the sprinkler system was installed.

We cut things down, dug things up, seeded and weeded, installed borders, put weed cloth every place we could, put bark on the weed cloth, planted my beloved rose bed at the entry of the home. One of the roses was trained to climb up the front of the porch. We planted Myrtle under the Quaking Aspen trees, as its hearty nature, glossy green leaves and purple flowers commanded the bind weed to disappear.

Eventually, I was able to sit on my front porch in my grandparents' old chairs and hide in the greenery. It seemed I had what I wanted – at least in one lovely little spot. But, sadly, I missed it completely.

Instead, we were focused on future yard goals. The Flaming Bush had to be moved over by the house because it was blocking the sunlight in the living room. The house desperately needed to be painted. And the sprinkling system was tired of dragging the hose around the yard all summer. (I was the sprinkling system.) I wanted a legitimate sprinkling system so that I could begin seriously gardening without worrying that a trip out of town would parch my plants. My mind spun and spun and spun into the future.

I stumbled upon this photo in my files a month or two ago and gasped. There it was – the lush green corner I had been cutting out of gardening magazines for years. It had everything I had wanted: the cottage... the vintage chairs... the roses... the plants... And, I hadn’t noticed.

I suddenly felt sick. I realized I only sat on our front porch under those conditions a handful of times. I had been so focused on the future that I had missed the happiness of the present.

Eleven years after purchasing our home, our “fixer-upper” is beginning to look fixed up. The house has been repainted. I now have a legitimate sprinkling system and flower beds with weed cloth underneath them so that I can plant anywhere I choose minus the worry of Bind Weed running my garden. Utah’s desert conditions will not ruin my plans should I visit my mother for a few days.

I am out of excuses.

And so, when warm weather arrives in our neighborhood, you will find me sitting in my chairs, looking at my roses, sticking my hands in dirt as I plant greenery and flowers, drinking lemonade, writing and working with my laptop.

The time to live life is now.

Tutorial: Using Quick Masks to Create Realistic Shadows and Highlights on a Ribbon

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OSX.

In this tutorial, I will demonstrate how using Quick Masks can help you in your digital scrapbooking layouts. I’m going to thread a piece of ribbon through a ribbon slide and make it appear more realistic with shadows and highlights.

I’m currently working on a 4x6 mini album, so I create my layout using some paper from the Intertwined Collection Mini, which I crop into the 4x6 size. I add some brushwork and my photos, edged in white ink. Now, I’m ready to add my ribbon slide and ribbon.

I use the ScrapSimple Tools – Shape: Ribbon Slide 8301 to create a ribbon slide and then apply the ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Chipboard 1801 style to it. I open my ribbon (also from the Intertwined Collection Mini) and place it on top of my ribbon slide.

You can choose to thread your ribbon from behind or from the top – it just depends on the look you want. Since I plan to put some text on top of the ribbon slide, I will want the slide showing and will thread from the top on this layout so that the ribbon goes behind the slide. Using your Rectangular Marquee Tool, select the area on the ribbon that will be behind the slide.

Hit Delete.

I then copy each of the sides of the ribbon (right and left) to their own layer, so that I can create the shadow and highlights independent of each other.

Now, I’ll create the depth with the Quick Mask. I select the right side of the ribbon by holding down my Apple key and clicking on the thumbnail in the Layers Palette (Ctrl+Click for PC).

You should see the marching ants around the segment of the ribbon. Next, click on the Quick Mask button.

A transparent, red overlay (the Quick Mask) should appear over your entire layout, except your selection.

Now, use your Magic Wand Tool to select your ribbon segment again in the Quick Mask mode. This will allow only your ribbon segment to be affected by the next step.

Next, I will use the Gradient Tool to modify my selection. By dragging the gradient from the outside of my ribbon edge toward the slide, I will create a faded selection.

Now, click on the Quick Mask button again. You will see your marching ants have changed – the selection is narrower. This is because of your faded selection. Next we will add the highlights.

Go up to Image> Adjustments> Brightness/Contrast in your menu.

I use a Brightness setting of 40, but you can experiment to see what you like.

In this screenshot, you can see that the ribbon segment on the right is gradually highlighted as it approaches the ribbon slide.

Now, we will apply a little shadow right where it meets the ribbon slide and goes behind it. We will follow the same steps as we did above, with some slight adjustments.

After selecting the ribbon segment again as above, click on the Quick Mask button again. Then, use the Magic Wand Tool to select the ribbon again.

Now, we will use the Gradient Tool again, but our gradient blend will run in a much smaller range, since the shadowed part will be very narrow. See the screenshot above.

Click Quick Mask again and you will see that the selection (marching ants) is very narrow. This is the only part that will be affected by the shadowing.

Once again, go to Image> Adjustments> Brightness/Contrast in the menu, but use the Brightness setting to darken this selection, instead of highlighting it. I use a setting of -80 for mine.

After you add the shadows to your ribbon segment on the right, repeat all of the same steps to add highlights and shadows to your ribbon segment on the left. Here is a screenshot of my finished ribbon with highlights and shadows on both the right and left segments.

I finish off my layout with some text on the ribbon slide and some flowers and leaves as embellishments. Here is the finished layout. Notice how realistic the ribbon looks, as if it were threaded through the ribbon slide. All done through the magic of Quick Masks!

April Board Game: Who Am I?

In honor of the month that starts the silliest way possible... it's time to get our silliness on! This month we'll be getting to know some silly and little known facts about our Scrap Girls Team Members as we play a rousing game of "Who Am I?" Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a fact about one of the ScrapGirls Team Members and ask, "Who Am I?" A new fact will be added daily until someone correctly guesses which team member is being described. Once a team member is correctly guessed, a new team member will be featured starting the following day.

Team Members include anyone featured on the "About Us" page of the ScrapGirls website including Product Design Team, Layout Artist Team, Welcoming Committee, etc. Answers to the “Who Am I?” puzzles can be found anywhere on the ScrapGirls site... including Gallery Layouts, team member bios, Boutique Layouts, etc.

If you are the first to guess one of the team members correctly you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Remember you may only win ONCE during the monthly message board game. We want as many people to win prizes as possible!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
