Life Muses by Ro: Playtime Has Arrived

“What makes men happy is liking what they have to do. This is a principle on which society is not founded.” – Claude Adrien Helvetius

Confessions are good for the soul and I have something I want to confess. Over time, as I worked with my team to manage Scrap Girls, digital scrapbooking started to feel like a chore for me. I spent less and less time on it. I did it when my work required it. When I created layouts, I became tense and worried that they weren’t good enough, as I am fully aware that I could not be considered an artistic genius digital scrapbooker. I don’t think I am a digital scrapbooking talent. In fact, I believe that I am one of the most ordinary scrapbookers to arrive in the industry. I am running Scrap Girls because I have other skills to bring to the table.

Perhaps, it is my scrapping ordinariness that makes me passionate about what I am doing at Scrap Girls. I love teaching people how to digitally scrapbook. I know that it can feel overwhelming to look at layouts created by extremely talented individuals and be too harsh when judging your own results. I get that some people are intimidated by software and are looking for a quick way to gain the skills they need. I am looking for ways that Scrap Girls can help people get past their own fears and gaps in their knowledge so that they can get in on the fun, too. That is why I constantly say, “Enjoy your layouts. They are your layouts. They are beautiful because they are yours.”

Anyway, here I am, an ordinary scrapbooker running a digital scrapbooking company.

I have been a scrapbooker (both paper and now digital) for years upon years. I often say that my “pre-professional” days were the happiest because I was “scrapbook innocent.” Those were the days when scrapbooking was my hobby. I was a consumer and I was in love.

But then I started working for some paper companies and picked up the idea that I wasn’t good enough to be scrapbooking. (Huh?) I needed to stick to my function as a Product Manager and Director of Marketing. (Huh?) When I started up Scrap Girls, I had to try to get past my fears and take scrapbooking up again. I had to scrap again to survive.

As time went on, and as the company grew, I found myself doing fewer and fewer layouts. I was too busy. I couldn’t get my supplies filed. I had more important work to do. I wanted to get away from my computer and do something else. But, since I am someone that needs an artistic outlet, I turned to my journal, as I write, scribble, draw, color, rip, paste and staple things into it.

One day, I thought, “I would like to put some photos in here on this topic. It seems silly not to show pictures I have about it.”

So, I went to my computer, fully intending to print out some plain photos and stick them in my journal. Immediately, the digital scrapbooker in me reared her head and I had rebellious thoughts. “What if I digitally scrapbooked these photos using a 4x6 size so that I could print them on photo paper? They would fit in my journal that way.”

I say that my thoughts were rebellious because at that time, the majority of layouts were 12x12 (printed at 8x8). It seems silly now, but I felt like I was jumping off of a bridge when I did this.

I created a new 4x6 document and began. I quickly found that I had to scale everything down to approximately 45-50%, but once I did, I could use all of my regular supplies. I noticed that the photo had to be the dominate factor on the layout. This solved the “fear of the large empty canvas” issue I had been having since beginning to digitally scrapbook.

Unexpectedly, I became eager to scrap and found I was scrapping a lot of photos I had wanted to use, but they had seemed too difficult to use on a large layout. The small size was perfect for the small “musey” topics I enjoy working on. I realized I could use these small topic layouts to create a series that would tell a story and the story could be displayed in an album.

I became more and more excited about what I was doing and, within a few hours, I had scrapped nine or ten layouts. I printed them out, stuck them in my notebook, intending to show them to Valerie at our impending business trip.

We were at a restaurant when I pulled them out. I became so animated that she had to calm me down a little bit. “I want layout templates,” I told her. “I want kits. I want everything there is to make these layouts go faster and faster for me. I don’t care if anyone else in the world uses them, but I am in love and I want this stuff.”

Valerie, who is a wise one supreme, nodded her head, wrote my ramblings in her book and came home and got a team of designers together. They kept their doings secret from me as much as they could because Valerie wanted to surprise me.

Of course, I talked about my new love in a podcast and started showing you 4x6 layouts in the newsletters. I went to Walmart and purchased two beautiful albums that hold hundreds of 4x6 photos for $5.00 a piece. (Score!)

One day, I told Valerie, “I think I’ve given people a few hints about the 4x6 project, V.”

She laughed and said, “You think? I wouldn’t exactly call those hints, Ro.”

And then, oh boy! It came time to release our 4x6 project to the world. When I saw what the designers had made... all of that beautiful 4x6 stuff... there were brushes, Assemble Your Zoom Kits, ScrapSimple Digital Album Templates and more. I felt like Christmas had arrived. In fact, I was giddy. My orphan child, 4x6, was now a legitimate member of the digital scrapbooking community.

I continue to create layouts in streaks of joy. For the first time since 2002, I am enjoying this hobby in a way that imbues sheer and utter pleasure. It is now just a nice side benefit that I can show you some of the layouts I make because they make nice “muse-starters” for the newsletters.

Digital scrapbooking 4x6 layouts = Playtime for Ro.

Isn’t it amazing? I think so.

- Ro

P.S. - I need to say that we had a few 4x6 Brag Books in the Scrap Girls Boutique prior to my light-bulb experience. But, since I am not a “brag book” sort of individual, I had overlooked them. These forward thinking designers need a great big pat on the back! Sometimes, it is just the right time for things to happen and I think it is 4x6’s time. They go fast, are fun, are cheap to print, and the albums are found everywhere!

I will also continue to do square 12x12 (printed at 8x8) layouts because often, that is the size that works the best. This is the best thing about digital scrapbooking. We can do whatever we want. We are in control of our world.

Designer Do-Over: Brandy Murry

My Original

Original by Brandy Murry

I want to redo the cover of the scrapbook I started in 2005 entitled, “Images of Us.” I keep adding to the album, but have never redone the cover since I created it almost three years ago. Oh my, has it been that long?

My Do Over

To begin, I take the original photo and decide to use the color version. After getting my placement down, I duplicate the picture and split it into two, so that I can blend the two separate pictures into the background. To do this, all I do is lower the Opacity to approximately 50% and use the Eraser Tool with a grunge brush to soften the edges. Once this is complete, I add my main embellishments.

Now, it is time to place my text. I want a layered look for the title and subtitles. Since this is a cover for a scrapbook, there will not be journaling on this page.

To begin, I start with the title I want to stand out the most, the main title. In order to make it jump to the front, I make sure that it is in a dark color that contrasts with the page well.

I want the secondary title to be softened a bit, so it will not fight with the main title. When you have other text or alphas on your pages that are blocky, a script as your secondary title really works nicely. As I want these words to be read together, I keep the font the same and lower the Opacity so that they are soft, but change the color of the word “Images” so that it stands out just a little from the rest.

The final set of subtitles includes the information. I always try to add the date or dates to a page. In 100 years, my family may be looking at this and wondering when this was. So, this information is always important to me. Again, I'll change the font to something different and smaller since this is a subtitle.

To complete the page, I add my final layer of embellishments, those fun little things that really bring your page together. This is always the most fun! My problem is keeping them to a minimum and not over embellishing. I often have to pull back, but that is the great thing about digital scrapbooking... you can add or remove as you please, no mess and no waste!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
