Customer Muse: I Never Said I Wanted to be a Teacher!
Life changes in an instant. One day I go from being a mom, the
next day I am an expert on autism.
When our little boy wasn't talking
at the age of two we were concerned. But
it didn't alarm us. Boys develop later than girls; it's not the
end of the world if he didn’t talk yet. We began speech
therapy and, unfortunately, a year later not much had changed.
We'd
wondered if there was something else going on, but something always
pushed the suspicions down. Until he turned three. When
he still wasn't talking, we went in for a second opinion. It was
at that time we were told he had autism. Wham! You can go
in prepared and it doesn't matter. The moment someone tells you
a thing like that... everything goes out the window. The sobbing
begins. You try to hold it in. It'll be ok, right?
My life
is so different now than it was three months ago. Back
then, I was a typical mom... an involved, caring, busy mom. Now,
I run "programs" for my little boy. I hire therapists. I
keep track of his progress and train the team. I make sure we're
moving along and continuing to challenge him. I have a new job. I
am a teacher, a facilitator, a human resources manager. OK, so
maybe back in my previous life, pre-kids, I functioned in roles somewhat
like that. But when I said I wanted to quit working, I meant it. And
really, I never said I wanted to be a teacher!
So, I am learning a hard
lesson about acceptance. I thought I
had it nailed a week after he was diagnosed. I thought, it's OK,
I can handle this. I accept it. Well, it's not that easy. The
thing about acceptance is that it's ongoing and it can rear its ugly
head at any moment. I have to work daily at accepting this new
life.
One thing hasn't changed and for that I am grateful. My little
boy is still a sweet, little fire cracker and he sure is cute! I
love him dearly and no matter how much my job description changes over
the years that will always remain.

Customer Tutorial:
Adding WOW With Digital Styles
“Style is a magic wand and turns everything to gold that
it touches.”
Logan Pearsall Smith
Digital Styles allow you to get amazing special
effects in your graphic projects.
This year’s Valentine card for
our mom was made using Photoshop CS2, some Scrap Girls Styles and some
styles found in Photoshop. Styles really add 3-dimensional WOW to your
2-dimensional layouts or cards.
All of the tools to create your own
styles are available in Photoshop. The Valentine card has several
styles added. See if you can find them!
There are drop shadows applied
to each element to add visual depth. Notice the shading to the bottom
and right of each object – as
if light is shining on the page from the upper left. There are inked
edges applied to the red paper and the paper bag scrap to add a bit
of grunge. For these, I used Mandy Steward’s Inked Edges
Style.
The glitter on the heart was done using Amanda Sok’s Glittered
Gelly Styles.
Where Can You Find Digital Styles?
As I said earlier, the basics
for creating your own styles are right in Photoshop or Photoshop
Elements. The best way to learn about styles is to just play with
them. The styles you purchase (like the Inked Edges and Glittered
Gelly in my example) are compound styles. By that, I mean that
each one incorporates several Photoshop Styles. A digital designer
probably spent countless hours trying different combinations of styles,
before getting just the right look.
The first style most digi-scrappers
use is definitely the drop shadow. When you add an element to a page,
you often want to add a drop shadow so that it appears to be resting
lightly above the background paper.
To add a drop shadow, activate
the element you want to shadow. (Click on its layer in the Layers
Palette and the block darkens.) Then, click on the script “f” at
the bottom of the Layers Palette. This opens up all of the available
individual styles, including drop shadows. Notice that each style
type has various options within itself. You may alter the color,
the size and spread, angle, Blend Mode and so on. Think of the
possibilities! I didn’t do the math, but I expect there are
a gazillion different effects that could be produced!
Once you’ve
applied a few simple styles to elements in your design, purchase
a few of the professionals’ styles and try
them out. I was just in awe when I used my first one. Not only are
they really cool to use, they are as flexible as the individual styles.
Each one can be customized to your taste or to the particular project
you are working on.
The purchased styles come with easy-to-follow
instructions. All you do is download the style you bought, unzip
it and put it into the proper folder on your computer. The next time
you open Photoshop, it will be available for your use.
To find the
compound styles (some come included in Photoshop) go to the Styles
Palette. (If you don’t see it above the Layers
Palette, click on Window and check Styles.) A set of styles will
show up automatically.
To select and load the new one you purchased,
click on the little fly-out box arrow in the upper right corner of
the Styles Palette. Voila – a list of all the style sets you
have at your disposal will appear. Click on your choice. You will
be given the option of "OK" (for "Replace") or "Append." I always
Replace so that I can keep the sets pure.
Other Effects in My Example
To crop and frame the photo in my layout,
I use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to outline the part of the picture
I want. I try typing different pixel amounts in the Feather option
box at the top of the screen to round the corners. (40 pixels turns
out to be just what I want.)
Since I want to cut away the parts of
the picture outside of the marquee box, I click Select> Inverse and
then hit Delete. For the photo border, I add an Inside Stroke
Style of 10 pixels in off-white.
The other Scrap Girls products I
use are a Sprig of Herbs Special Brush by Ariadna Wiczling, a file
tab from Cheryl Barber’s
Antique Charm Collection and Kraft paper from Erica Hite’s
Destinations Collection.
Go get yourself some Style!

you'd like to share. You can be serious or quirky - it's totally
up to you! Remember, the only real rules for ATCs are that
they must be sized 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Let's have some fun!
Please note, that I am having this chat on Saturday
rather than Sunday this time. Hope you can make it!

crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos
and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal, and
a fun, new challenge each week!
On April 2, we'll do a black and white challenge! Create a
layout using black and white - either black and white papers
and elements, or black and white photos, but not both!
You'll have one hour to create a layout and upload to the special
High Noon Crop gallery. You'd be amazed what you can get done
in just one hour! Meet new friends and have fun in the chat
room!
We hope you'll join us!

Join me, Launa,
for a Textile Challenge and Crop. We will meet the first

Do you get inspiration from anything from pillows to your grandmothers
apron? Then this challenge is for you! A few hours before the
challenge begins, I'll post a textile for you to use as the
starting point for your page. You may be inspired by the colors,
placement of patterns, textures... just let it be your inspiration!
I can't wait to see what you come up with! See you there!

as necessary throughout the month!

best action shot and the story behind it posted to the
March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you
could win $10 to the boutique!

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional
digital scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create
layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there
waiting in your software for you to use such as paths,
masks, the drawing pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you
can make things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools
that you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear...
That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind
to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside
of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside
of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used
to do that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets
frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this
trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all
along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used
Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself
in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have
to understand layers, where things are located, and all of
the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite to
back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important
documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely
up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying
about losing important business and financial files, because
the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
