Life Muses by Ro: Make a Wish

One day, about a month ago, I sat in my office chair and considered why my inner self felt so cluttery. My list of things to do and consider was growing so large that I couldn’t see through it to decide what I should focus on. Whenever I tried to make mental lists of what I needed to do, I experienced brain cramps and I swam to shore, panting for air. When I attempted to write it all down, my mind abandoned me and thick fog from the San Francisco Bay rolled over the western deserts and made their way through my tiny office window.

I felt confused and was pulling at random threads that hung from the air around me – never quite able to grasp anything that would pull me back onto solid ground.

One day, as I considered how I had arrived at such a state, my eyes traveled around the room and I suddenly saw how full it had become. I decided that I would get up the next day and clean it out. No, clean it isn’t the right word. I was going to purge.

When morning arrived, I felt a sense of unexpected anticipation. I wasn’t sure what I was going to discover in my cabinets and shelves.

I began with a cabinet that I suspected held clues to my dilemma and as I cleaned, I was amazed to find bits of old stationary left over from high school, greeting cards with no envelopes that my mother had given me when they had sold their department store in 1978. I discovered old Christmas cards that I had never used. I also realized that I had a large number of 4x6 photo papers. Apparently, I had been throwing partial boxes of 4x6 papers into my paper pit for several years. Once gathered together, I had a complete box.

I organized, arranged and admired the materials I chose to keep. I threw away two garbage bags of sheer nonsense.

The process continued in a similar way as I went through each of my cabinets. The most revelatory cabinet is the one in which was specially designed to store my German violin. For those of you that haven’t been with us for a long time, I’ll catch you up on this subject: When I started Scrap Girls, I needed to raise some money and as I am a very conservative individual, I choose to do this by selling my valuables, including almost all of my recording equipment and my 1770 German violin.

When I found my way through my violin storage cabinet, I realized that I had been stuffing the empty space with beat-up boxes and other trash. I suppose that I was unconsciously trying to rid myself of the pain of seeing that empty spot.

Once I reclaimed the space, I located my wire music stand (the nice wooden one had been sold with the valuables) and my tuning fork and placed them in the violin’s slot. They sit there now, calling out to some unknown instrument to come join them. Perhaps one day I’ll own another violin and enjoy the feeling of intense vibration and sound streaming out from under my chin and through my body.

I have made a wish.

I now have an organized office. Everything I use frequently is located where I can see it or reach it easily. I have empty space. I can think. And, while my countertop still manages to fill up with project-sprawl, it is organized chaos.

I challenge you to find one spot in your home or office to clean. When you do, get rid of things. Use two bags while you are cleaning: One will be used for items you throw away. One will be used for items you are going to give away or donate. Do not keep anything you will not use. Organize as you go. Don’t allow any “I may need this if there is a nuclear war” or “when my grandmother was 13, her second best friend gave this to her and if I get rid of it, she will be offended” thinking. Open up some empty spaces and make your own wishes.

Now that I have finished the job, there is only one thing that surprises me… that I didn’t do it sooner.

Tutorial: Creating a Spring Bouquet That Won’t Wilt!

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS X.

With spring having just “sprung,” I have been trying to think of a fun table decoration that would look festive and last through the season. A friend recently shared with me the perfect answer: paper flower bouquets! What better answer for a digital scrapbooking fan who loves beautiful papers?

Here is how I create my bouquet:

I start with the ScrapSimple Tools – Shapes: Flowers Abound 8301 Biggie to get a wide assortment of pre-made flower shapes for my spring bouquet. The wonderful thing about using a custom shape tool is that you can make the shapes as big or as small as you want, without losing any quality or resolution. I am making my flowers about 3-4 inches for this project.

After selecting the flower shape that I want, I click on my paper and drag about 1-2 inches, while holding down the Shift key. (This keeps the flower shape proportional.) The flower shape path is now created on my paper.

Then I go to the Paths palette and choose “Make Selection” with a Feather Radius of “0.”

Next, I copy the selection and paste it in a new document where I assemble the various pieces and layers of my flowers. After assembling the different layers of paper for each flower, I use brushes and styles to give the flowers some character and flair.

After I create each flower the way I want, I print them on my printer. Then, I cut out all of my flowers with small tipped craft scissors.

Next, we will give our flowers some stems. There are different ways to do this. You can use some thick wire, small dowels or skewers, or floral stems from a craft store. I have chosen to use skewers (that I painted green) for mine.

Apply some strong adhesive to the stem of your choice and stick it to the back side of the flower. I use hot glue.

Repeat this for all of your flowers. You can embellish your flowers at this point with ribbons or leaves to your heart’s desire. Once all of your flowers are assembled, place them in a glass vase filled with jelly beans and arrange your bouquet. You’re done!

Now, enjoy your beautiful spring bouquet without worrying about it wilting! Of course, if your house is like mine, you might have to worry about those jelly beans disappearing…

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
