Life Muses by Ro: I can see!
“The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has
sight but has no vision.” - Helen Keller
I have talked too much about this the past few months, I suppose,
but I can not finish my Lasik eye surgery journey tales without relating
this one last thing to you: Hallelujah! I can see!
Even though I began
to wear glasses in the fourth grade (and have no idea how long before
that I needed them), I didn’t fully appreciate
what it means to see well. I do remember getting my first pair of glasses
and telling my friend at recess that I was amazed to find that I could
see blades of grass when I was standing up. I had only seen a sea of
green before that time.
But I got used to my new reality – seeing
well – very
quickly and never thought about it again. I fell into a regular routine
of eye exams, experimentation with contacts and glasses, and fashion
shifts as frame styles vacillated through the decades. When I started
to need help reading, I got bifocals.
By then, I needed three pairs
of glasses:
-
A long distance/bi-focal combination which allowed me to navigate
in most circumstances.
-
Computer glasses.
-
Sunglasses, which (inconveniently) did not have bi-focal correction.
This meant that I couldn’t use them for anything but long
distance driving.
After a while, three pairs of glasses didn’t do it and I found
myself throwing my glasses off in disgust when I tried to read. My
inadequate solution: Pull the book up close and squint. (Trombone reading
didn’t do it for me.)
I began spending $600-700 a year in a hopeless
effort to get it right while my eyes spun out of control. Each exam
revealed new corrections and demanded more glasses.
I finally reached
the end of my patience and opted to have corrective eye surgery. Mono-vision
was chosen. (My right eye is my reading eye and my left eye is my long
distance eye.)
It was not easy for my brain to adjust to the new reality
of long distance/short distance balancing. In fact, it kind of freaked
out. I couldn’t see anything well and I worried that I had ruined
my life. I had unfortunate side effects including haloing and crazy
light effects at night. I had to use steroid drops so that I could
look at my Christmas tree.
But the worst of it was that my left eye
was under-corrected and over time, it grew worse. It was obvious that
I had to get it touched up but I couldn’t get it touched up until
three months had passed.
After a while, my left eye’s vision became
poor enough that I felt uneasy driving outside of my immediate area
and I couldn’t
read the menu while changing TV channels. I couldn’t shop because
I was unable to see what was down the aisles and I felt confused by
the signs on display.
When I was a child, we had to ‘tune’ our
television set so that the picture was clear. If we didn’t get
it quite right, the picture wasn’t sharp and it was miserable
to watch shows. That was my experience.
On March 12th, I went in for
my tune-up. I held my breath, asked for an anti-anxiety pill,
and prayed that this time it would work out right. And, it did! By
the next morning, it was discovered that I had 20/20 vision.
For the very first time in my
life (that I can recall), I have 20/20 vision.
Because I have had to
limit my computer time at first, I was forced to find something else
to occupy my time. I realized that I could drive so I went out to do
some errands. One of my stops included my favorite haunt, Barnes & Noble.
I
was in the store about 15 minutes before I realized that something
marvelous had occurred: I could see! I could see! Everything was clear.
I could find my way around without help.
The ability to see seems so
basic. It is as basic as drinking water or listening to the sound of
your computer keys click as you type. It is as basic as touching a
stick and feeling the rough texture of the wood. And yet, it is a miracle
of the highest order that we can see.
Oh, please... open your eyes
and look. See how wonderful everything is. Can you drive? You have
a ticket to freedom. No wonder teenagers are so thrilled about it.
You can go almost anywhere you want when you can drive. I was in the
upside-down position of having to ask my teenage daughter to drive
me places for three months and now that it is over, I feel released
into the wind.
If you can’t drive, so what? You can walk or ride
a bus or a train. It was hard for me to do that, too. I got lost and
felt a little mixed up most of the time. But now, I can see! I can
see!
I can see the snow falling outside of my window and the list I
have written on my wall and I can read the clock on the other side
of the house. I can read books and make layouts and play the piano
without straining to figure out what is going on.
I can see!

Question: I have a question
that I hope you can help me with. I am using the Threadbare
Embellishment Template for individual stitches and holes and I would like to
know if there is an easy way to grab the little PNGs and move
them around once I have them in my layout. I have been able to
move the stitch, but every time I try to move the holes, PSE4
jumps to the full layer beneath. I hope that someday I may be
able to post some answers instead of just posting questions.
Answer 1: The easiest
way I know to get a small embellishment is to click the thumbnail
in the Layers Palette. Also, it often helps to zoom in very
close. That's what I know, but I'm no expert. Hope that this
helps. And, don't worry, soon enough you'll get the basics
down and be helping someone else out. Believe me, it WILL happen!
Answer 2: I have PSE4
also and this can be pretty annoying. When I have this problem,
I just uncheck the "Auto Select Layer" box just above the workspace.
Answer 3: I have had so
much trouble with this, too! I usually zoom way in. Thanks
for the tip about the Auto Select.
Answer 4: Sometimes things
like that are difficult to grab because of transparency. What
you might want to do in a case like stitches and holes is to
select both and then link them together so that when you grab
the stitches, the holes will move with them. |

Question: Now that I have
a few layouts in my gallery, I want to print them out as 12x12
pages. Here are my questions:
- When saving a layout, what size
do I resize the image to and do I save it as a PSD or a JPG
file? (I use PSE6.)
- Is there a list of printers who will print and
send me my layouts? Who have you used and been happy with?
- This
may be an odd question, but can you use a photo-safe marker
and write on the page once it has been printed? I want to
use my handwriting to add my daughter’s heights and
weights on her baby book pages.
Answer 1: Congratulations
on getting your layouts ready to print!
- I always scrap at 300
dpi 12x12, then resize to 8x8 to print at home. I always save
my PSD file with the layers in case I want to change something
later. But you'll want to save a 12x12 as a JPG for uploading
and printing.
- If you are a member of Costco, I hear that they
can print 12x12 layouts. Also, Scrapbook To Share is a place
where you can upload your layouts and they will print and return
to you. (They have a sample package where you get to upload
an image that they will then print on three types of paper
so you know what kind you will like. All you pay is postage.
I've used them and I'm very satisfied!
- No clue on the pen. Hopefully,
someone will be around soon that knows.
Answer 2: I hope I can help.
- After
you complete your layout, flatten your image and save it to
your hard drive for safe keeping as 300 dpi in 12x12 format.
(These will be the layouts you will want to print from.) Or,
you can keep it in layers, but they will have to be flattened
before you print or upload them. Then, resize it to 72 dpi
and save it again in a file on your hard drive named "Gallery" or "Layouts
to Post." (These are for posting in your personal album
or the gallery at Scrap Girls.) The Help file says that layouts
have to be JPG, PNG, etc. PSD or PDD are not listed as acceptable
file types.
- I've printed several
layouts through Costco and like their work. There are several
message board threads about printing that you might want to
look at.
- I don't see why a photo-safe marker couldn't be used and
I always find personal handwriting to be a nice touch, whether
you do it directly on the photo or scan your handwriting and
add it to your layout.
Answer 3: Many people have
been very happy with Costco and you can email them your pages
and they will mail them back to you. Go to costco.com if you
are a member. Costco not only prints scrap pages, but will make
enlargements or bound scrapbooks for you as well. They are very
reasonable and do a wonderful job. Others have used Shutterfly
- I think they cost a little more. And, there are other printer
services. I print mine 8x8 at home and they come out really well
- I'm very happy with the results.
Also, on the pens, you can
get them at Michaels or Hobby Lobby, even Target. Just make sure
you get a pen that is designed for scrapbooking pages - these
pens won't bleed and won't fade over time. Just look for them
around the scrapbook pages section. They usually have paper so
that you can try out the pens before you buy them to make sure
it's the right color and tip that you want. I get mine at Michaels
or Hobby Lobby and use my 40% off coupons. Never pay full price,
but get decent pens.
Response Question: I do
belong to Costco and think I will try that. Can I order online
from them? Will they mail me my pages? What are the types of
paper and what do your recommend?
Response Answer: I think
you'll be happy with Costco. My prints have all been great!
Answer 4: I've recently
started looking at getting some layouts printed, but I'm not
paying $13 for one page! That's locally. I contacted Costco here
but they don't do 12x12 printing. The biggest they do is 11X8.
Wal-Mart will do them for me, but it’s about $9 a page...
still rather pricey! I contacted sbtoshare to see if there's
a price difference because I am Canadian and if the shipping
would be different as well. I can't wait to hear back. I was
starting to think about taking them to a print shop but, honestly,
can't see that being any cheaper... if anything, more expensive.
Answer 5: I love Scrapbooks
to Share! I sent them about 30 12x12 layouts in February
and had multiple copies of each printed. They only charged
$1.50 for regular paper and $2 for cardstock. They were back
to me in less than five days and their shipping rates don't
change no matter how many pages are in the order. Their upload
and order system was super easy. The prints are GORGEOUS. I
am not sure I could print them anywhere else for less, even
if I did it myself.
Answer 6: I've had some
12x12 prints done at Scrapbooks To Share and the prints are wonderful.
My only disappointment is that they don't print full bleed. There
is a 1/8" white border. For my everyday layouts, this is
perfectly acceptable, but I think I want my wedding album to
be full bleed. Someone posted another site that does do full
bleed for close to the same cost as SBtoShare. I don't have the
site saved on this computer so I'll have to go look on my desktop
for it.
Answer 7: I did contact
Staples about doing some printing there. They could do custom
12X12, but it would be pricey. My other option is to do the 8X8
layouts. They would charge 85 cents per layout and a $1 fee to
read off of the CD/flash drive. I have printed 8X8 at home and
am satisfied with my printer’s capabilities. I just wish
I could figure out how to get it so that there is no border around
the layout. I just can't seem to get the sizing right! I've also
just installed a fresh color card that I plan to use only on
layouts. I'm curious to know what the cost of printing is at
home vs. the cost of getting it done elsewhere. |

MORE
Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements
versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0
It's time for you to stop playing
catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more
advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital
scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
