Software used: PSE 4.0
Name of challenge: Spring
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To change the color of the paint swatch on the “memories” embellishment, I used my magic wand tool (with Contiguous selected and the Tolerance set to 32) to select the paint. I made sure to get the interior sections of closed letters. Then I selected a shade of purple using my color picker tool from one of the photos. To change the color, I went to Enhance> Adjust Color> Adjust Hue/Saturation (or you can use the keyboard shortcut Control+u or Command+u on a mac) and checked the Colorize box. I adjusted the Saturation and Lightness sliders until I was pleased with the final color.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
In order to unify all the pretty patterns and colors for this layout, I simply applied Cheryl Barber’s SS Tools – Styles: Chipboard Textured 4107 Mini to all the elements. This particular style (Inclusions) made the edges look sanded and intensified the colors at the same time, bringing the varying elements together nicely.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to show both the entire photo and a close up of the flower in the photo. To get the close up, I used the Marquee tool with the Feathering to about 40 pixels, and drew a circle around the main photo. I dragged my selection onto my layout and played with the blending mode and opacity until I got a look that I liked. Then, to grunge up the edges even more, I used Brandie Valenzuela’s Grungelle Brush Set and went around the edges of my photos to get a grungier feel.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Using the composite version of the lifted photo frames, I positioned the frame above my photo until I was satisfied with the placement, then with the photo frame layer active I used the magic want to select the inside of the frame, I then went to select, modify and expanded the selection by 10px. The select, inverse, and then making sure my photo layer was selected, delete. This gave me a perfect fit for my photos inside the frames. Then I linked the frame and photo layers, to make sure when I moved them around in the LO they would move together.

Name of layout: Finally Spring
Software used: PS CS2
Name of challenge: Spring
Directions for one thing I did:
I wanted to create what looked like the path of a little boy running, twirling and stopping to explore. I used Melissa Renfro’s dynamic brush set: straight stitch 5001. I have a quick tip for those new users of dynamic brushes. Start on a new layer and begin off the edge, draw your line and end off the edge. Repeat to create the meandering border. It looks like one long line but really it was very easy to do with several short lines of drawing.

Name of layout: You Make Me Laugh
Software used: PSPX
Name of challenge: Spring
Directions for one thing I did:
Because the background of my photo was really busy I decided to blur it out and give my photo depth of field. To do that I simply duplicated my photo. Then from my layers palette, I activated the bottom photo and applied a Gaussian Blur effect to it. Adjust>Blur>Gaussian> apply a value of 20 and click OK. Now activate the top photo layer and click on the eraser tool. Erase around your subjects until your background is completely eliminated. When erasing up-close to my subjects I use these eraser option settings. Hardness: 50, Step: 35, Density: 100, Opacity: 50.

This was my first crack at using the new Dynamic Brushes from the Boutique, so I decided I’d better play around with them a bit to see how they worked. I created a new layer and played around with different sizes and colors – each on a new layer – until I found just the right size and color for my layout. Then I deleted the layers I didn’t want to use. I can see that these brushes can be very addicting!

A Designer's Life: Syndee Nuckles
Just Relax and Start Talking
I admit it. I never know what to say in these Designer’s Life articles. How much of myself do I want to reveal, put out there for the world to view, ponder, mull and judge? What if what I say makes you think less of me somehow? What if what I say sounds dumb?
I still need to learn so many things, one of which is to not over analyze everything - to just relax. I thought it might be fun to answer some questions not only for you to get to know me better, but to have a log of what I am thinking or liking at this very moment. You see, I am constantly changing my mind. Not about important things, but about favorite things, foods, places, books, music, etc… I used to get so upset with myself over it and now I celebrate it because I am NEVER bored. Never. There is always something new to be discovered, something new to hold my interest and, hey, ART is never boring. That’s why I have the best job in the world. I am a mom and an artist. They go hand-in-hand because my children are my canvas.
Eye Color: Hazel. I used to hate this color. I wanted a specific color. Here I was a teenager with hazel eyes, dishwater blonde hair and Marie for a middle name. How much more average can you get? Not to mention, being the middle of three girls. I wanted so much to be unique. Now, I love hazel. I like the name - it’s funky and old-fashioned at the same time. I like that my eyes change depending on what I am wearing or what mood I am in. God knew what He was doing. I know that now more than ever before.
Height: Almost 5’6”. I like to round up! The funny thing is that when I graduated high school, I was all of 5’ 3” and had been told that you stop growing by 18. But, I grew almost another three inches by the time I turned 21.
Right or Left-Handed: Right, but I like to see how much I can do with my left hand. I wouldn’t want it to feel left out.
Your Weakness: Chocolate and purses and shoes. I LOVE shoes. I once had 100 pair. Love me, love my shoes.
Your Fears: I don’t believe in saying them out loud; you never know who might be listening.
Best Physical Feature: My hands.
Your Bedtime: Whenever I can get my brain to turn off, usually early in the morning.
Do You Sing: I love to, not that it sounds great, but it makes me happy.
Have You Been In Love: Every day of my life.
Do You Believe in Yourself: Yes, finally.
Do You Like Thunderstorms: YES! I like to think it’s God reminding us of His presence.
What Is Your Favorite Color: I love them all!
Number of Things in My Past I Regret: I guess I’ve finally learned not to regret, but to learn from the things I would like to do over.
Do You Like to Clean: HA! That would be a big NO!
Do You Like to Cook: Another big NO, much to my mother’s horror. I do like to bake.
Believe in Love at First Sight: I would like to think it’s possible.
Phone or IM: Phone - I love to talk on the phone and hear the inflections in a person’s voice. It’s amazing how much of one’s personality comes alive in their voice.
Morning or Night Person: I don’t think I even have to answer this… do I? (Night)
Are You a Collector of Anything: I like to collect everything bright, beautiful, sparkly or unusual. The best thing? My kids are all collectors, too. It just makes me smile.
If You had Super Powers, what would it be: I would fly - it sure would save on time wasted in traffic, not to mention gas!
What’s on Your Mind Right Before Falling Asleep? My kids and what my next design project will be.
Favorite Animal: Orca whale - they are beautiful, strong and smart.
If You Had $1 million Dollars: Buy a house out in the country, but not far from Starbucks and the library!
Bad Habits: I like to snack at night and have a terrible sweet tooth.
Three of Your Best Personality Traits: Upbeat and positive, good sense of humor, what you see is what you get.
Three of Your Worst Personality Traits: I am super insecure, too sensitive and I talk too much.
Mostly a Clean or Messy Person: Creatively messy.
Five goals on Your Life’s To-Do List:
-
Teach my kids the value of being true to oneself and finding what makes them happy
-
Learn piano
-
Learn how to say NO
-
Experience art and life every day
-
Be happy being ME
Name One Thing You Miss About Being a Kid: My metabolism!
Name One Thing You Love About Being an Adult: The freedom to be ME and not having to live up to someone else’s version or vision of/for me.
What Would Be Your Dream Job? Be a designer at Scrap Girls, working from home. Oh, yeah! I AM a designer at Scrap Girls! Lucky me!
Name One Thing People Might Not Know About You: I used to wear high heels every day for about six years.
If You Had to Change Your Name, What Would it Be? Something like Bronwyn or Isabella or something creative and artsy!
Well, that’s a bit about me. For today, anyway. Happy Scrappin’

My favorite product I've designed:
Isn't It Romantic Collection

I love the versatility of this collection. While it lends itself to anniversary, Valentine’s and wedding layouts, it can be used for any theme. I am proud of some of the unique embellishments that I was able to create for this collection.

Themed Thoughts
We’ve noticed various requests popping up here and there on the message boards, people looking for things from licensed characters like Disney Princesses, Pixar’s Cars and Winnie the Pooh. Since we cannot do collections with licensed characters in them, we’ve come up with an article to help you use those great Scrap Girls products you already have (or should have!) in your stash for these types of themes.
Disney Princesses
Do you have pictures with your little ones meeting Cinderella for the first time or dressing up as Belle for Halloween? Then we’ve got some ideas for you!
How about using A Princess Collection with all of its bright colors, pretty ribbons, crowns and wand? There’s also a Brush Set: A Princess, along with Brush Set: Fairy Princess and even an Assemble Your Own: Wand.
You can use these along with Assemble Your Own: Family Labels and the birds from Altered State Altar Card to create a great title, as seen in the layout below. Also used below is a shoe from the Anna Grace Collection, covered with a paper from the Just the Basics papers, with the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Frosted Glass 6401 style applied to it. The bright papers are from the Basic Brights papers biggie, which coordinate wonderfully with the bright colors of the princess dress, which was taken from the Wedding Dress Card, and colored to match the layout.

Layout by Launa Valente

Also, the Harvest Pumpkin Collection has a pumpkin for Cinderella’s coach, and you can find apples for poisoning in the Harvest Pumpkin Collection, ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Precious 1, and Digital Stickers: Fall Fun Biggie.
If you’re looking for something to work with Ariel from The Little Mermaid, try Water Paper for an ‘under the ocean’ feel, with animals from the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Silly Sea, and you can add a water feel to any title with the ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Water 6101. You can write your journaling on a wave shape with the ScrapSimple Type Paths: Waves 3801, along with the ScrapSimple Tools – Shapes: Waves 3801.
Launa Valente used the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates – Layered: Storybook Castles to create a whimsical backdrop for a photo of her daughters dressed up as princesses, wearing a crown from the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Bedazzled.

NASCAR
Do you or someone in your family have an obsession with everything NASCAR? What about cars in general, or is there a little one in your life who loves Lightning McQueen? Then how about using the FASTCAR Collection mini (or its Brush Set and Paper Templates). Or the Cruising Collection to showcase that love!
Jo Corne did a layout using these collections, as shown below. And notice how she cleverly used a race flag for the R in the title. So cute!

Layout by Jo Corne

For the title piece shown below, I used the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: License Plate – 3D Biggie, ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Rusted License Plate 6102, and ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Weather 1501 for the lightning shape.

Winnie the Pooh
When I was a little girl, I loved TIgger from Winnie the Pooh, and since I’ve had my son, I have tried to pass on a love of Tigger to him. This included dressing him in various Tigger outfits and accessories from the time he was only 3 months old. But since we don’t have a specific Tigger collection, I decided to think outside the box, using ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Animal Prints Biggie to mimic his orange and black stripes.

Layout by Laurel Lakey
larger
view
For Winnie the Pooh layouts, there are a lot of things you could use! For instance, how about creating a forest by using the Forest Path paper, Naturescape Collection Biggie, and Leaves of Time Texture Set. You can also find bees and butterflies in the Spring Signs Collection, Baby Cake Embellishment Biggie, Brush Set: Grunged Butterflies, Brush Set: Le Jardin, Delightful Embellishments, and Dynamic Brush Set: Garden Party 6301 Biggie. A great idea for a blustery day type of layout is to use the Dynamic Brush Set: Variae Formae 8201 to create a windy feeling to the background. You can find a blue balloon for Christopher Robin in the Assemble Your Own: Birthday Party Balloons!
I want to stress that these suggestions are not an exhaustive list -- they just represent a small percentage of the type of products you can find if you look creatively and think outside the box.
I hope that with these great products at your disposal you’ll be able to creatively use those themed photos to make wonderful layouts that you’ll treasure.
Have fun!

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises
as necessary throughout the month!

scrapbookers doing.
- Take the world's easiest shortcuts to
creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
- Make sure that you don't make the biggest
mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
- Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap
Girls ScrapSimple products.
- Dip your digital scrapbooking self into
some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting
in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing
pen, and more.
- See how easy it is to install and manage
new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make
things that are creative and unique.
- Learn advanced tricks for using tools that
you already know and love.
- Watch me make some beautiful papers and
get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That
is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you
do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers.
It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers.
Very private stuff.)
- See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm
betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do
that with, too...)
- Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets.
(You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating
you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder
why you haven't been using it all along.)
- Find out why Custom Shapes are so important
to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
- Learn how to cut out a title from a background
or a photo.
- And even more...
Note: These are NOT beginning
tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop
before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software,
you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers,
where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills
that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook
Software Secrets Revealed series before you try
to use it. |

it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date

important business and financial files, because the backup happens
