Customer Muse: Small Miracles
We instinctively look for bits of ourselves in our children; hoping, mostly in vain, that with the proper environment we can improve upon the genetics and/or character foibles we may have passed on and over which we actually have little or no control.
I am very proud of the adults my four children have grown into. I have discovered bits of myself in my sons, much more so than my daughter - which I find interesting (but, then, she always has been "daddy's girl").
My oldest son latched onto my love of science fiction and fantasy - fueled, I'm sure, by our late Saturday night dates with Dr. Who when he was young. He also inherited my irreverence and my rather compulsive approach to detail. (I am also an oldest child.)
My second son, the least like me of the three boys, received the ability to be totally in love with his children. Watching him parent his two daughters is an absolute joy to me. I have seen him cry when the baby takes wobbly steps toward him or the kindergartner recites something she learned at school. (I used to cry on Sunday mornings when my kids served as acolytes and lit the candles on the altar at church.)
My daughter also inherited my attention to detail. But, where I tend to be cerebral, she is more action oriented. Where I am an introverted isolationist, she has and maintains friendships all across the country. I was her biggest cheerleader when she packed up her car two years ago and moved from California to Maryland - just because she could.
My youngest son was born after the others were all in school and has lived a much different life than his siblings. Where the older kids had a full-time mom to do all the school stuff, Scout stuff, etc., his mother was in school herself and working (and, by then, worn out). But this child has been a revelation to me. I totally see myself in him: social misfits because our brains run at warp speed, more comfortable with computers than people, too tall to be acceptable, intolerant of stupid behavior (makes you real popular in high school) highly cerebral and introverted, defined as cold and unfeeling because we are not highly tempered and do not emote all over the place. As I worked my way through his diagnosis of ADHD, I realized that 45 years ago there was no name for what I went through and I thanked God that my child had a parent who understood, that this parent had "been there, done that" and had the T-shirts to prove it. Suddenly, my crazed life made much more sense. (My mother still doesn't get it.)
I'm not sure what my husband sees of himself in our children, but I see his work ethic, his odd-ball sense of humor and his ability to be an excellent provider for his family. I also see his stubbornness and his love of tools. Our children received some of the best and some of the not-so-best from both of us (that's not a dig at the tools!) And, in my slightly ego-centric effort to "see" myself in our children, I actually - courtesy of our youngest - "found" myself. Thank God for small miracles.

Way Cool Scrap Girl : Kim K.
I am new to digital scrapbooking, but this is how I got to love it and why I love Scrap Girls.
Five years ago, I got married for the first time at 39 years-old. We had decided that we wanted to adopt a little boy from Russia and immediately began the paperwork process. This is when I began scrapbooking.
The wait was killing me. We knew that there were going to be three trips to Russia and lots of photos that needed to be put into albums. My mom showed me all of the die cuts and paper and explained how scrapbooking was done. Of course, the first (and only) book I did this way was about how we found our son and our journey to him. While this book was truly a labor of love and tried my patience, I found that I did not have the time (I work full-time) or the space for this type of scrapbooking. So, I explored digital scrapbooking. During that time, I tried many, many different programs and finally settled on Photoshop Elements. I found that in order to create a page for my scrapbook, all I had to do was turn on my computer. It required very little time or space, which was perfect because not only was I still working full-time, but now had a very busy toddler (the love of my life) running around.
The search began to find embellishments and papers that I could use with my new program. I searched the web and tried a few and then I found Scrap Girls. I browsed the boutique, tried the freebies and I was hooked. I started purchasing the Biggie Collections, read the newsletter and would think to myself “I can do that.” Now, I just wish I could remember all of those great ideas, but I know there will always be more.
This was one of my first digital layouts. This was my son’s first Easter home with his Forever Family; how I was able to get these photos, I don’t know. It was probably because I could not believe I finally had my son home and never put the camera down. But, there he was in the bathroom tearing all the toilet paper off of the roll. Then Daddy came in and had to explain to Ronnie that although this was fun it probably was not the best choice. I used the Extinct Collection Biggie for the background and word art. I love using the collections because it takes away the guess work on how to coordinate everything.
I still have a lot to learn about digital scrapbooking, but I know Scrap Girls will be there along the way to help me. I have used the tutorials and when Christmas came around and I was looking for an inexpensive gift that was personal and unique, I turned to Scrap Girls. Everyone received a large chocolate bar with a personalized wrapper. Needless to say, these were a big hit.
I don’t know if I will ever get caught up with scrapbooking (I have almost completed 2004) but I know that Scrap Girls will be there for inspiration.
This is why I love Scrap Girls.
