Life Muses by Ro: What Could Be Better?

In between the Boutique upgrade and personal issues (remember “The Door” incident from Tuesday’s newsletter?) last week, I simply did not have time to write any muses for the newsletter this week. So, I’m taking this opportunity to bring you some of my “Best of Ro” muses. Enjoy!

Standing on cement block pilings, the home stood ready for inspection. It was one of two buildings that had been moved and was ready for its next move anywhere you wanted to take it – should you want to take it anywhere. The sign outside read, “For sale.”

When I saw that house, I was overcome with curiosity and an overwhelming desire to see what was inside. I carefully walked up the gangplank onto the porch and opened the door.

I generally associate polyester garden party dresses with little elderly ladies carrying cinnamon buns on tin-foil covered cookie sheets to their sick neighbors. However, the previous owner of this home never received the word that polyester is for party dresses, so she had allowed it to creep about until it covered the furniture, the walls, the appliances, and the lighting fixtures. In some cases where polyester hadn’t quite fit the bill, its first cousins – plastic, vinyl, Naugahyde, and faux wood – took its place. It was an artificial heaven, frozen in time in the countrified belly of the 1980’s.

I wandered from room to room, looking for some redeeming feature. It was very spacious for a house its age and the layout was interesting. But there was so much to be done to update it - I knew the building needed to be gutted. The cabinets needed to be replaced. The walls should be ripped out and new sheetrock put up. It might need new wiring and plumbing and floor coverings.

I felt embarrassed to be in the house, even though I found it interesting and comforting inside, so I headed for the front door.

I opened it and stepped out onto loose piles of wood. They seemed solid enough and I didn’t give it a second thought. But as soon as my foot touched the wood, it gave way and I found myself suspended over a huge pit, balancing on a thin plastic sheet that threatened to give way at any moment. I waved my hands in the air, desperately trying to find something substantial to hold on to. I needed to pull myself back onto solid ground.

I was so angry at myself. How could I have been so careless not to have noticed I was stepping off into dangerous territory like that? Why had I been in such a hurry to leave the house? Truthfully, I had felt that I would be judged for being in the house so I abandoned it. Now, with my life in danger, there was no one around to rescue me. Thankfully, it was only a dream.

  • “Everyone chases after happiness, not noticing that happiness is right at their heels.” – Bertolt Brecht
  • “Are these things really better than the things I already have? Or am I just trained to be dissatisfied with what I have now? Am I just under a spell that says nothing is ever good enough?” – Chuck Palahniuk

I live in an ordinary, middle-class neighborhood. Actually, I live in one of these homes that my dream described. It had been covered with huge vinyl roses, teal carpet, and fussy plastic cabinets when we purchased it. It needed new wiring and plumbing. We had to redo the bathrooms and the kitchen, replace the roof and the swamp cooler. Anything you can think of that needs to be done to a fixer-upper, we’ve had to do.

Because we are almost done finishing the top floor and the outside of the house (we are on the pay-as-you-go plan, which is why it is taking so long to complete), the house is finally starting to look right in the world. It is the sort of house that Aunt Bea might live in… a little yellow cottage surrounded by roses and trees and tomato plants.

My husband and I recently went on a vacation to Huntington Beach, California. We drove around the area and took some tours. We went to the local malls and ate out. Frankly, I was a little shocked by the level of excess we saw. I saw women carrying shopping bags filled with clothing that cost enough to finish my basement. I saw homes big enough and expensive enough to rebuild schools in Louisiana. I ate a couple of meals that cost enough to feed my family for a week.

I came home confused and bemused. Was all the work we had done on my home for nothing? I knew there were plenty of people who would think my house is a shack. I have to admit I was furious at myself for feeling like that. I had been perfectly satisfied with what I had prior to my vacation. Okay, so I am just a little lady that wanders around in jeans, T-Shirts, and elastic bands. I generally feel okay about that.

But as we went in and out of the beautiful hotel we stayed in, I got the feeling that we just weren’t up to snuff. While we were driving the smallest rental car you can get, the other guests were driving Hummers and BMW’s. There wasn’t an elastic waistband within miles – unless it was attached to a micro bikini.

Aunt Bea was in Donald Trump-land.

And Aunt Bea is having a hard time understanding why designer purses cost enough to refit my living room with new furniture. She is having trouble understanding why it is necessary for Nicholas Cage (she saw his home) to have a house as big as a high school. Aunt Bea would rather finish her basement than have a big diamond ring.

Is she nuts?

When we come into the world, we all arrive in the same manner. When we leave the world, we leave with nothing but what we learned while we were here and the legacy of what kind of a person we became.

So what is this stuff really all about?

I have seen these things on television, in movies, and in the pages of magazines. I have seen celebrities go in and out of red carpet affairs wearing extravagant dresses and dripping with millions of dollars in diamonds. I have heard about entire malls where clothing and purses and shoes cost thousands of dollars. I finally saw all of it with my own eyes and I came away asking myself, “What is this stuff really all about?”

I came home feeling unnerved by my experience. I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was wrong; I haven’t wished to become part of that world.

And then I had the dream.

I wondered for several days about my dream and what it represented. And after a bit I realized that Aunt Bea doesn’t need to be Donald Trump. She can just be Aunt Bea. And if Aunt Bea tries to escape herself and become Donald Trump, she just might find herself where she is not only uncomfortable, but where she just doesn’t want to be at all.

This Aunt Bea does have dreams for herself, but they do not include diamond rings, large homes, and expensive cars. This Aunt Bea wants to be useful and kind. This Aunt Bea wants to feel good about who she is – as she is. Anything Aunt Bea acquires along the way will just make it a little easier for her to do something meaningful with her life - and she would love to do something meaningful with her life.

So for all Aunt Beas in the world I say, “Let’s be kind to who we are, have fun with the things we have, enjoy the hobbies we enjoy, and appreciate what we have within our reach. Let’s not make ourselves miserable by thinking that the Donald Trump’s of the world are somehow better than us. Let’s just have a good time, sit on the porch with a glass of lemonade and listen to Andy play the guitar while he sings duets with Barney.”

What could be better than that?

- Ro

Tutorial: Coloring ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 on a PC running Windows Vista.

Scrap Girls has an arsenal of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates - from
antique buttons to zippers and everything in between! The great thing about embellishment templates are all of the looks that you can get from just one template. Just by changing the color or adding a digital scrapbooking style, you will have a completely new and unique embellishment. You can change the color to match whatever you are working on. Versatility should be their middle name! Let’s see the different ways you can color these valuable tools.

Let’s start out with a heart template from the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Loopy Love. Using Styles is a really easy and quick way to color and dress up your embellishment templates and Scrap Girls has a fabulous selection of ScrapSimple Styles.

Here, I have used Shalae’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: News to decorate the solid heart portion of my heart template. Then, I applied Durin’s ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Wrinkles to the two outline portions of the template. It is so fast and so easy!

Another easy way to add color and even texture to an embellishment template is to use a background paper from your stash.

Open your embellishment template, make a duplicate copy and close your original to keep it intact. Select a paper and just drag the paper on top of your template.

Next, you will want to create a clipping mask by holding down CTRL+ALT+G or by selecting Create Clipping Mask from your Layers menu. This will make the background paper stick to your embellishment.

Now, click on the background paper layer in your layers palette and select Overlay from the Blending Options menu in the pop-up window. This will allow the embellishment to show through the paper. Add a button or another embellishment to the center of the flower to add a special touch!

Here is another example of using a background paper with the embellishment templates. I am using the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Photo Clusters and adding patterned paper to the circles of the template. You will see how I use this on my layout at the end of this tutorial.

Here, I use a flower from my ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Floral Fantasy and add a gradient to give it a two-toned look. Just click on your flower in your layers palette and choose Gradient Overlay. Pick one of the gradients from the drop-down menu. In my example, I chose Radial in the Style drop-down. You can play with the slider until you like what you see.

You can also just apply a color overlay to your template. This is great when you want to perfectly match a color in a photo or layout. Just click on the template in your layers palette and select Color Overlay. I usually choose the Overlay or Color blend mode and then click on the color swatch and choose a color.

OK, now it’s time for you to get out your templates and see what you can cook up! Happy coloring!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
